At the heart of the Clié is the Palm OS running all the applications you need to keep your life in check. The PEG-NR70V comes with Date Book, To Do List, Memo Pad, Mail, and Expense tools, and the Sony-enhanced Address Book that enables you to add photos to your contacts listings. On top of that you also get Clié specific applications such as Remote Commander--for controlling home entertainment devices, Audio Player, PictureGear and Clié Camera.
The digital camera is very easy to use, simply point the swivel lens at your subject and press the capture button on the side of the screen. This is great if you need to take pictures quickly. The camera is a bit limited as it can only take images at a maximum resolution of 320x240. But it can produce some nice images--even if they are a bit on the small side. The audio player allows you to playback audio files transferred from your PC and it supports both MP3 and WMA audio formats and standard CD audio. To really get the most from the digital camera and audio player functionality, it is advisable to invest in a Memory Stick as the PEG-NR70V only has 16MB of internal memory--not much room for music or loads of images. The Memory Stick can also be used to transfer data between the Clié and your PC or other Sony products such as their laptops or digital cameras.
Powering the PEG-NR70V is a fast 66MHz DragonBall processor and 16MB of memory. The high-resolution flip and rotate TFT colour display will support over 65,000 colours. It is compatible with Microsoft Windows 98, 98 SE, 2000 Professional, Me, and XP, and connects to your PC using the USB port. The PEG-NR70V comes with a USB HotSync cradle (which also charges the battery), digital audio remote control and in-ear earphones, a detachable AC adapter, and a stylus.
As a first PDA or an upgrade from an older model, for the money, you'd be hard pushed to find something better than the Sony Clié PEG-NR70V. The Palm OS is simple to use yet powerful, and the high-resolution screen puts other non-Sony PDAs to shame. The digital camera may be a bit gimmicky to some people, but it is very handy for taking snapshots quickly and easily. Whip it out at meetings and heads will turn--in your direction.--Martin Snelling

Much to Commend but some quirky design features,

This review is from: Sony Clié PEG-NR70V (Electronics)
Having experienced a range of Palm based handhelds in the last 4 years and wanting an ability to store large amounts of data I invested in the Clie PEG NR70V which nicely uses the 128 Mbyte Memory Stick I had previously been using in my Camcorder,HP psc 950 printer and Handspring Visor Prism with memplug adapter. This is my first Clie and the features I like about it apart from the integral memory stick slot are: The features I don't like are: (1) When in traditional Palm swivel state there is no way to switch quickly between the standard palm applications as the hard butttons for these are above the hardware keyboard , which is only easily available in the flipped swivel state. One solution to this is YiShow which is an application launcher and external memory viewer. It dispenses with the sofware graffiti area and allows hotspots to be linked to any of the main palm applications. Essential for traditional Palm users who prefer Graffiti to hard or soft keyboards. Now for some comparisons: In summary : A great evolution of the Palm OS family with some quirky design points which can however be overcome with 3rd party sofware. If you're thinking of geting one go ahead there's much to commend.

A great gadget, but don't buy it...,
By Steven Harris "Gadget Lover" (Alvechurch, Worcestershire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sony Clié PEG-NR70V (Electronics)
I love Sony Clie having purchased two of these great PDA's in the last 2 years. The latest purchase is in fact the PEG-NX70V (note the X, not the R) which I was fortunate enough to buy in the U.S. last week. The reason I say hold your horses on the NR70V is that the latest and greatest, whilst looking almost identical, does introduce some great new technology which you should not be without. The highlights are : 200Mhz ARM processor; Palm OS 5 (with the really cool welcome screen); improved camera resolution (300,000 pixels vs. 100,000 here); lots of great new software (including documents to go that allows you view and edit word and excel documents on the move) and best of all an integrated voice recorder which allows me to remind myself of all the great ideas I have had. One of my great ideas was to not rush into buying the "R" and wait for the "X". So if you are not to bothered about the fact that it will obviously cost you more money (as all new gadgets do), my advice is to wait a few weeks and get the latest toy, otherwise you will kick yourself when it's launched in Europe. Of course if you are not too bothered about the extra features I mention above, then the R is a perfectly good, no a great PDA (plus they have reduced the cost to intice you further).

best pda i've ever used,
This review is from: Sony Clié PEG-NR70V (Electronics)
This is by far the best, fastest and coolest looking pda that Ive ever had the pleasure to own. People have expressed concern about the screen, that the 180-degree swivel may break over time; well from what i can tell that isn't going to happen, it feels well made and secure.I first thought the keyboard would be a bit useless having got used to graffiti, but it has come in very handy when my hands are getting numb. The buttons are well spaced and it is easy to keep up a good words/minute speed, after about half an hour to an hour of usage, both the keyboard and graffiti work out about the same, but below that its not worth using it. For users who haven't ever used a pda though, the keyboard will probably be your main form of data entry as there will be no need for you to learn a new input method. The remote software Sony provide can't be programmed so something like omni remote will be needed if you want to use your pda as a remote, but this can't use the high powered part of the IR port so has limited range. The processor is twice as fast as most of its competitors and really does make a noticeable difference. Shame it doesn't come with palmOS 5, but you can always update when it becomes widely available. Overall i can't really fault this pda, but the price might be steep for many, and right now pocketpc might be seem a better OS, but in the style stakes, this may encourage them to join the palm camp.
