This player did feel a little cheap and plasticy. Although for the price I didn't mind that so much. However what really ruined this for me was the ridiculously low volume out.
Even after reading from other reviews on the internet, I refused to believe that any manufacturer could limit the volume to such a low level and decided to order this... After all what's the point of a music player if you can't hear what's playing???
Despite turning off AVLS and making sure the volume was turned up to the maximum (30), I really struggled to hear music over the slightest of background noise. I listen to a talk radio station on my way into work and there's no chance of me hearing what they're talking about over the background noise of other commuters, traffic, trains... etc. I suspect that 90% of people who buy such portable players use it on the go, right? So I'm totally baffled at how wrong Sony have got this! This was not an issue with my old player, and there's certainly nothing wrong with my hearing!
I emailed Sony support to see if there was a way around this or if they planned to release a new firmware to address the problem. The reply I got, although sympathetic, was unsurprisingly unhelpful and suggested I return the product for a refund. Which is what I have done.
I've read that the low volume level is due to EU regulations, which kind of explained a lot. If so, then this ranks almost has high on the daftness scale as their regulations on how bendy bananas should be!
Oh and for others considering buying this, it doesn't come with any kind of protective cover/sleeve/pouch. This for me was another negative as the device will certainly get scratched over time without protection. How much more would a small neoprene pouch set Sony back?
Also, the USB cable uses Sony's own proprietary connector instead of the standard mini-USB. I like to have more than one cable just in case one fails and most USB devices these days use the industry standard mini-USB. I have several devices that use this type of connector, including my old MP3 player. I resent having to fork out, however little, for extra accessories. This is one of the reasons why I refuse to buy an iPod. I'm not a tight-wad, I just refused to be milked!
The positives:
1. Slim compact design.
2. Simple and intuitive button layout and interface.
3. Nice colour display.
4. Long battery life and quick charge... Although I never got round to testing these.
5. Use of drag and drop to copy music, video, photos instead of being tied into an application like iTunes. Another reason why I won't buy an iPod.
Seriously though, unless you plan to buy a set of those noise cancelling headphones or use this player in a sound-proof room, you will find the volume output level way too low for comfortable listening.
Sorry Sony, but mine's gone back for a refund!
