Amazon.co.uk Review
The Sony NW-MS9 Network Walkman is a wonderful looking piece of hardware from Sony that oozes class. It's small enough to hide in your hand and is a top-rate piece of design. A single button controls forward and backward skip and play while a small rocker controls the volume. There's a tiny multi-function LCD screen with a pleasing backlight. Music is stored on a Sony MagicGate Memory Stick and it comes supplied with a 64 MB stick. This will take between one and two CDs worth of music, though you can purchase additional Memory Sticks to provide extra storage capacity. Sound quality, at the higher rates of compression, is superb. Power comes from a slim rechargeable battery and there's a separate charger that it clips into for top-ups. Battery life is not one of its strong points however, about four hours. A second battery is a good idea, especially if you start using more than one Memory Stick.
Strictly speaking this should not be thought of as an MP3 player but rather an ATRAC3 player. This is the file format used by Sony's MiniDisc players. You can use MP3, WAV and Windows Media Technology compliant files but these need converting first. This is a pain if you already have a large collection of tracks in another format. The software is unfortunately not up to the same high quality of the hardware. It wasn't as stable as it could have been on our test system. While it does work with Windows 98, Windows 2000 and Windows Me, there are a couple of issues with the latter two that you need to be aware of. In Windows 2000 it doesn't support NTFS, only FAT32 and on Windows Me PCs, there is a possibility of the System Restore feature corrupting your OpenMG files. It insists on managing your entire music collection too. There's no quick-and easy drag and drop of tracks to download them, you have to build playlists first. It's all a little long-winded. Data transfer to the player is commendably fast though. The files use a form of copyright protection that can be restricting. You can't, for example, record files on one PC and then copy them to another PC and then download them onto the player.
The NW-MS9 Network Walkman is well-designed and beautifully built and there are few player with such an instant appeal. There are more practical alternatives but few as devilishly handsome. --Miles Berkeley
