Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The brand new Sony MP3 WALKMAN is the most cutting-edge yet, combining high-end design with ease-of-use and advanced functionality which seriously upgrades your listening experience. The 6GB NW-A1000 has space for up to 4,000 songs with up to 20 hours battery life and is made from a futuristic translucent material, sexy to the touch and gorgeous to look at. As it comes to life, the luminescent Organic EL display lights up. The three buttons make operating the player a cinch. Naturally, because it’s a Sony, the audio quality is impeccable.

Whether you’ve owned an MP3 player before or you’re new to them, you’ll find the new WALKMAN so simple to use. Just like a mobile phone, the display features nine navigational icons on the home menu from which you can manoeuvre up, down, left and right to search, shuffle and access all your favourite tracks. The search method is much simpler to use than other players as it’s easy to jump straight to the artist, album or song via their initials, rather than scrolling up and down a long list.

The WALKMAN features a revolutionary new ARTIST LINK function. This means that if you’re listening to an artist or track and you press the artist link button the new WALKMAN will search, find and display similar artists in that genre. What’s more, you can also choose how to ‘shuffle’. By selecting ‘My Favourite Shuffle’, the device automatically selects the most listened to 100 songs and plays them at random. The ‘Time Machine Shuffle’ function randomly selects a year and plays all of the songs from that particular year that are currently held on the device.

The WALKMAN will be accompanied by a whole range of design-matching accessories; a stylish remote control for easier navigation, various carrying cases, a docking station for convenient connection with the PC, as well as a docking speaker system giving the option to connect to a PC (data sync) and play music through the speakers

CONNECT Compatible
The WALKMAN comes complete with brand new software called "CONNECT Player". This software is necessary to store, transfer and update all your tracks on your PC. And with the CONNECT music downloads fully integrated into this software, it’s easy to go on-line and download tracks from the Sony music service.

CONNECT lets you access hundreds of thousands of tracks from old favourites to brand new cuts – and even more independent music that’s usually harder to find. It also gives you access to the latest news, reviews and biographies, so there’s plenty to keep you amused... All in all, the WALKMAN offers you the next level in MP3 players, combining the cutting-edge design you love with the sound quality and ease-of-use you demand.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended - A great MP3 player, 22 Feb 2006
This review is from: Sony NWA1000B 6 GB HDD Walkman - Black (Electronics)
Having read some reviews I purchased this item knowing that I might be taking a chance with the music transfer software. I was very tempted to buy an Ipod Nano (my girlfriend has one and I think they are superb), but was persuaded otherwise by both the looks and storage capacity of the 6GB version of the Sony. The item arrived extremely well packaged (I can only liken it to the packaging you'd get with an expensive watch). First impressions are that it's a nice size (fits perfectly into the hand) and looks great. It takes no time to charge the unit and once 'on' the display looks good as well. I installed the Sony Connect Player software which was extremely painless, took about 30mins and had all of my MP3's transferred within an hour or so. I assume that this software is different to the software of past versions (see previous reviews)...it really couldn't have been easier! My only issues, and they are minor ones, are that it's very difficult to see the display in direct sunlight, and I find the max volume to be slightly quieter than expected. If you are thinking of buying an MP3 player within this price range I'd choose the Sony every time!

    4.0 out of 5 stars Sony NWA1000B 6 GB HDD Walkman - Black, 7 April 2006
    By A Customer
This review is from: Sony NWA1000B 6 GB HDD Walkman - Black (Electronics)
I must admit that I thought long and hard about buying this MP3 player after all the poor feedback; but, I'm glad I got this one. The Connect software is the one let-down in the whole package. I decided to just download Sonicstage 3.4 and use that instead; it's fine recogising the device straight away (albeit you can't use all the functionality on the player - but I've heard Sony plan to update Connect so you can always upgrade to the revised version then). I've heard all sorts of horror stories about SonicStage being difficult to use and slower than paint drying - but I can say it's been easy to use and quick enough (200 songs in 15 minutes). The player itself is great, nice design, great screen (easy to read, bright enough, plenty of information - it smudges easily but it's a minor annoyance), battery life is brilliant, the capacity is excellent (I think the claim about getting 4,000 songs on might be a little optimistic but you'll get more than other 6Gb players), and the volume is fine too. Overall it gets my vote.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice hardware, bad software, 3 Jan 2006
This review is from: Sony NWA1000B 6 GB HDD Walkman - Black (Electronics)
No one can deny how nice the actual player looks. It's great. It does, however, have a few minor problems. The screen becomes difficult to see in daylight. I went outside today and it became hard to see. So on a summer's day... it may be almost impossible to see the screen. Also a few useless features. Artist Link is quite pointless - I'm sure you'll know which artists are similar without having to press a button dedicated to this feature. Apart from that, it has great and simple navigation and brilliant sound. Very good headphones as well; the best I've ever used.

Sony Connect, although it is simple to use, it is very sluggish when handling large libraries. Mine isn't particularly large (about 1300) and it doesn't like scrolling through the library. When it gets working, it shifts songs onto the Walkman very fast, but takes quite a while to finish up - and even longer when shifting more than a couple of albums onto the player. I tried to delete my entire library off the player - it took a long time for it to respond. I was going to try out the Atrac format (half the size of mp3 files, for the same quality), which was the reason for the attempted library deletion. It couldn't handle 'transcoding' all the library at once and decided to skip every 8th song. I had to do it a few hundred songs at a time to make it remain responsive. Probably not a huge problem, as you're only likely to do this once to an entire library. However, even with small jobs it becomes temperamental - often refuses to delete songs and says songs are/aren't on the player when they aren't/are. It also takes a long time to load up, and I found it sometimes just randomly closes itself (this latter complaint may just be my computer, but the former complaint is a common problem, I have read). If it didn't use so much RAM and ran smoothly, it'd be great as it is very simple - but as it is, it is slow and frustrating. There are some ways round this, apparently, such as using SonicStage and other Sony programs. But this shouldn't have to be necessary for a Sony product to have to revert to older programs.

Good points: great looking player (about iPod mini size, and about the same weight for people who want to compare it to iPods :-D), excellent sound, excellent headphones, excellent navigation, free album from Sony Connect Music Store when you register your Walkman.

Bad points: Connect Player software (even with all the updates - needs sorting), Unnecessary features (artist link, loads of shuffle options), Can't see screen well in daylight (probably much worse in sunlight).
