This review is from: Sony NW-A3000V 20 GB HDD Walkman MP3 Player - Violet (Electronics)
After much deliberation between this and the iPod nano i decided to go with this, maily because the spec beats the nano's hand's down. I read the reviews about how dodgy the software is but thought that even if its not as straight forward as iTunes, so long as it works who cares. I didn't find it that bad at first but now, after a few months of having it i've noticed how flawed it is. Initially when i uploaded all my songs onto it, it was really straight forward and was relatively quick. But now when i go to add just one song it goes through a process of recongnising every song on the player which takes a good 10 minutes. Importing files is a problem too, sometimes after carrying out the commands the software does nothing and just stays idle. Worst of all when i select certain artists in my library the player turns grey and i have to close it. The mp3 player itself is great though, good sound quality and battery life. The only flaws lay with the software which prevents this being an essential purchase in terms of mp3 players. The 4 stars i'm giving are for the player, the software is the only factor which keeps it from being 5.

Top MP3 player, let down by the software., 23 May 2006
This review is from: Sony NW-A3000V 20 GB HDD Walkman MP3 Player - Violet (Electronics)
I received this MP3 player on my birthday (just before christmas) and I've been very pleased with it ever since.. Ever since I ditched the Sony Connect software that comes with it, at least!!!
I thoroughly recommend using the latest version of 'Sonic Stage' as I find it very intuitive to use (I don't get on with itunes). Whereas 'Sony Connect' is slow, buggy, suffers many crashes and clearly shouldn't have been released until these issues had been resolved! Sony - Are you listening???
Anyway, the good news. The player itself is a well built piece of hardware. It could possibly be slightly smaller when compared the 30GB ipod but looks great anyway. Very sleek, with a highly scratch resistant finish and feels very like a quality roduct in your hand.
The navigation of menu's etc is very easy to learn so no problems there. One thing is that it doesn't have a any kind of touch device, such as the ipod roller wheel and Zen Touch pad. Although, this fails to be a problem.
The screen is designed so the writing appears to be on the mp3 casing. A clever and original design. It is bright enough to see in most lights, except on a really sunny day, i've had a job to see whats on it!!
One of the reasons they chose this screen design was it uses little power. As a result the player has good battery life, it lasts about 10 hours for me. Not quite the 15 they've claimed but fine for daily use and better than some others, ipods included!
Now, I can't fault the sound quality at all. Its fantastic, even with the supplied earphones. This partly because I ripped all my cd's in VBR mp3 (I recommend it). As a result i've almost filled up the player at about 4,000 songs. I did try the ATRAC3plus format, that can potentially fit 15,000 songs on the player put found the sound quality to be too bad for my liking! So when Sony say 15,000, it depends on how much of an audiophile you are!!!
One more thing. I've seen some reviews complain about the hold button. Saying the player turns on when in your pocket etc, because the hold button doesn't work when the player is off. The answer - If you pause a song then apply hold, the player will turn off in a few seconds and hold will still be applied. I realise this is more complicated than it should be!...
All in all its a great player, packaged with poor software. I recommend it to anyone looking for an ipod alternative.

I cannot leave the house with this Item!, 23 April 2006
This review is from: Sony NW-A3000V 20 GB HDD Walkman MP3 Player - Violet (Electronics)
Now, I'm a technofile, and it came to a surprise to most of the people who know me that I never had an MP3 player. The thing was that there were so many "Good" MP3 players out there that I didn't know what to get.
I had been told to stay clear of Ipods because of the low battery life, and the design of other models didn't cut it for me.
The Sony HDD walkman was my choice because it had the smooth design, which makes it so comfortable in your hand, not only that but after my sister had bought one of the small 512MB Network walkmans we tested the sound quality at the lowest bitrate (atrac3plus 48kbps) and was astounded by the quality of the sound the device made.
The same quality of sound is replicated in this device, but what do you expect from the inventors of the walkman who have had decades of experience from creating walkmans.
I am going to admit something though. Like the others on this site have told you, the software can be a little tricky to use with the device at first, and after a bit of uninstalling and reinstalling have found the software to be working perfectly.
My advice to you is that you should connect the device ONLY to allow your computer to install the drivers for it, then DISCONNECT it until you have assigned your music to the software AND you allow the software to locate all the Artists Links (see next paragraph), which can take some time to do, but it means that the sofware will be much more stable once you connect up your player for the first time.
Both the device and software work together to create a fully rounded music experience. Artist Links are assigned to each song, and upon the push of a button on the device, allows you to see other artists that are of a similar genre to the song being played. Artist Links are downloaded from the internet using the software which then uploads it to the device.
The software and device also record how many times you play your songs and will automatically rate them for you. Each time you connect the device to the software the software will work out your favourite 100 songs and update the device so that you can get easy access to play.
Don't be put off by the comments about the software. It does work, just be patient with it and you will reap the benefits from it.
