4.0 out of 5 stars Looks Good But!, 3 Oct 2008
By C. Hobbs "CJ" (Portsmouth UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sony NAS-SC55 Giga Juke all-in-one 'Multi-Room Package (Electronics)
I purchased the Sony NAS-S55HDE Giga Juke from Amazon, an excellent service as always, because I wanted to gather all my MP3s on to one system. I proceeded to transfer all my Cd ripped MP3s to the systems Hard Drive. This to fill around 50GB (yes I have a lot of CDs) took nearly 2 Weeks! If you have a small difference in the MP3 tags (ie: Upper or Lower case fonts) for the same album it will put them into seperate folders.
The couple of drawbacks to the Gigajuke is that when trying to connect a USB device such as an External Hard Drive to transfer files, it will only recognise Drives with the Fat32 format, So I've had to re-format two of my NTFS Drives. Also when connecting to the Internet without a Network Router capable of Aoss, if you have a Wireless Router you to have keep entering a WEP Security Key as every time I enter & save the key It seems to forget it when I switch Back to the Remote Wireless Receiver. It also takes an age to switch from one system to another depending on the amount of data onboard. Changing from a good quality Hi-Fi the sound is a bit Naff with no Bass Treble or Balance. Just a few settings to choose from.
This said though I am very pleased overall, it does what it says it does, sound is better than the Philips System & is brilliant at parties. The other night I had the Wireless Receiver setup in the garden & everyone seemed to think it was a great bit of kit. If you don't mind the switch over & entry problems, then go for It!

3.0 out of 5 stars false promises, 5 Nov 2009
By I. A. Jakubiak "techno addict" (Gloucester, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sony NAS-SC55 Giga Juke all-in-one 'Multi-Room Package (Electronics)
I am not a compulsive buyer and most of my electronic purchases are well researched in advance. I read manuals (if they are available - and if not I reconsider the choice).
And yet Sony managed to trick me into buying this thing by promising a universal Hi Fi of real 21 century design.
Well - most of their 'features' are just wishful thinking.
But let me start with what this giga juke does. It plays music, for sure. It plays CD's and DAB radio. It stores music on its hard drive. You can record the radio program and in most cases the x-DJ can sort the tracks into music and talk, which then can be deleted at your discretion.
You can play the recorded music in another room on the 'client' via wireless network connection. You can try to get the Internet radio - I have not done it as I mostly listen to Classic FM.
But - there is a big misdirection about its ability to connect to the internet to get information about the recorded tracks.
Well, you can connect your giga juke server to your router via cabled connection and then it is connected to the internet - but not to your local wireless network! If you set the server connection to 'wired' - it loses its connection to the client.
OK, so you are offered an option of using your local wireless network for both the server and the client connection, which then they should be connected to your pc and the internet too... Total Bul...!
I spent days and dozens of communication with Sony and my ISP to find out that their 21 century giga juke supports only WEP security settings on your wireless network. Which basically means, to use this thing at your home as promised, you have to make your network helplessly unsecure and open to any attack.
No, thank you Sony for this trick!
So far I used to buy Sony products in hope they will always work together. So I have Sony Bravia, Sony DVD recorder, Sony Vaio and now Sony Giga Juke or GIGANTIC JUNK!
And it is the end of my buying from Sony: false promises, lousy support and mediocre reality. Thank you very much.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not good over largeish distance or through walls!!!!, 13 Feb 2009
By S. Martin (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sony NAS-SC55 Giga Juke all-in-one 'Multi-Room Package (Electronics)
I've finally given up and returned this after two months of trying.
We have a largeish bungalow and wanted to run the main unit (server) at one end (living room) with the slave wireless unit at the other end in our bedroom. With the supplied router balanced in a doorway between the two it could just about make it through a few tracks - but once it loses signal it just stops. Yes, we have walls, made of brick! If you live in a small house with cardboard walls you'll probably get on fine and it won't drop the signal when streaming, but in our house it was just never happy unless the whole system was in the same room together which kind of un-does the reason for having a wireless system...

It isn't made clear in any of the user guides how to set the system up if you already have your own wireless network at home - which we do. You can link this system up using your exising router (you don't need to use the one that comes with it at all in this case) and indeed if you want to link it up to any of you home PC's in order to transfer your music files from them then you will have to link it up to your exising wireless network. BUT, your network will have to have WEP security - if it's set up with WPA security, the gigajuke cannot get onto it at all. This for me was unacceptable as we use our network for secure banking transactions and WEP is just not secure enough for that - so basically, if you're expecting to be able to transfer information from your home network and you're happy to have an insecure network, then this system will probably be OK for you (it worked with our old BT home hub, but when trying to connect to a new D-link router, it wouldn't connect, even if I used WEP!).

If however all you want to do is either rip cd's to it, or transfer data from a flash drive then it'll be fine - you can directly connect the router that comes with it to your existing router via an ethernet cable, this will give you internet connection so the gracenote database function will work for downloading album artwork and track information, and of course you can listen to the internet radio stations - although at present there are no BBC or even any local uk radio stations available - fine if you want to listen to american radio from what I could make out!

The 80GB hard drive I felt was really too small - especially when you consider you can now get a 120GB Ipod for £162!

The sound quality was OK, I wouldn't say it was stunning, which for this sort of money I would expect - you can't even adjust the treble or bass! I can't comment on the quality of the DAB because we can't get it here.

We've sent ours back, replacing it with a couple of ipods and some docking stations - I'm going to link one of those up to my good old fashioned denon amp and speakers - I'll get just about as much functionality as I had with the gigajuke (more - it'll actually keep playing the music!!!) and the sound quality will probably be better!
