I purchased this s/w in January 2013 and had some initial problems with sluggish performance and files that kept on locking up the program. After support through Sony's help desk I was able to resolve the problems. The first was resolved with a s/w build update and the second when it transpired that the GoPro camera s/w was in some way generating an issue in Sony Studio Media and stopping the video from moving past the 3 minute point in the video. This was not an issue in Pinnacle 15 or 16 but by using the raw GoPro output it avoided the problem. It is still not clear why Vegas objected to the GoPro clips. Now I will start to use the s/w features.

A fully featured bit of software. Just wading through the 98 page user manual. Sadly, as an O.E.M version of the software was supplied, I had to print the manual myself.

Perhaps the Most Powerful Non-Pro NLE..... 9 Oct. 2012
By Gail Lee Mac - Published on
If you have a fast computer (I7 or AMD 6 core), Lots of ram (its a 64 bit program), and Lots of diskspace free, this is a fantastic program for the price. The production suite is an even better deal. I often mix 3 different cameras and it renders beautifuly. This version on my system is 3 times faster than version 11. The help is fantastic as it the sony vegas Movie studio help forum. This is a very powerful NLE, but has lots of help videos on Youtube and a "show me how" interactive help system in the program.

This is the NLE for the advanced consumer or pro-sumer. The NewBlue plugins that come with it would cost you much more than the production suite. And they are very useful in make high quality, professional videos. Be advised that you computer needs to be update will all current drivers and well as having specific video cards to use the GPU processing which adds addition speed to this 64 bit software.

You will need to spend time watching videos or using the show me how Help system, but it is worth it. If you ever want to advance you won't have such a long learning curve because Vegas Pro is very similar in its operation. They have a free downloade 30 day trial, I'd suggest anyone looking at getting an NLE download it and give it a spin.

Five Stars Reflects the Competition 17 Dec. 2012

I have been a Movie Studio user for almost three years now. My first experience was out of necessity because I tried other video editing software and was disappointed with the results. My computer system is pretty advanced. Two monitors, 64 bit, i7, 12GB RAM. Adobe's Premiere Elements crashed practically every time I used it, making it useless even after I waited a year and upgraded only to find it had more features, but the same bugs. I moved on to Pinnacle Studio hoping for a better result. Although more stable, I wasn't impressed with its interface.

I have found that the most important upgrade in version 12 is the 64-bit version. I have seen a very noticeable improvement in performance, especially in rendering high definition video.

Several years ago, I purchased the Sony product. The stability is fantastic. No crashes at all. The user interface is mostly intuitive, although it definitely has a learning curve. With those situations where you are trying to do something new or advanced, I found that the best tutorials were on, of all places, YouTube. For most issues, you can follow the help instructions, which are well organized.

Eventually, some video editing software might eclipse Movie Studio. For now, I consider this the best choice available.

Very happy with this product 8 Nov. 2012

I had been using Sony Vegas Pro 9.0 for the last 3 years to produce music collaboration videos (I'm the drummer) and upload them to YouTube. Unfortunately my Windows XP operating system is slowly getting to be "out of date" and Vegas 9.0 won't install on a computer with Windows7. I decided to try Movie Studio instead. It's almost exactly the same layout and menu selections etc. that were in Vegas. There was ZERO learning curve!! The only limitation (which doesn't affect me) is that Vegas has unlimited vid and audio tracks and Movie Studio is limited to 20 vid and audio tracks - PLENTY for what I use it for. Also - at $89 vs. around $400 for a new Vegas package it was a no-brainer! Check out some of the results at [...]

A Great Improvement over Previous Versions 21 April 2013
By Lassokid - Published on
Before this version, I used Sony Vegas 9, so I cannot compare how it performs relative to Movie Studio 10/11. Version 12, in my opinion, is a vast improvement over 9. I used to have trouble editing MP4 video in version 9 because it had a lot of trouble rendering it. I don't have that problem with version 12; in fact, the preview rendering is much faster and I can work with a wide range of video formats with ease. The interface is very much similar to previous versions, but I believe the software stability is worth the money. I don't know how many times I worked on a video for hours in version 9 only to have the program crash and the project file lost. I have not had this type of experience in version 12. Obviously, there is a steep learning curve in any Sony Movie Studio software, but once you get the hang of it, you realize how much time you save and editing choices you have.

Personally, I don't use 99% of the special effects in the software, all I need is to be able to adjust basic settings like contrast, saturation, slow motion/fast motion, and add color grading and subtitles. After many years of using Sony Movie Studio, I still believe it is the best editing software out there. Editing software cannot make your videos into motion pictures. That has to do with your equipment, artistry, composition, storytelling skills, but editing software is simply the glue that connects all your shots into a story. It can refine your videos, make it "pop," but there is not much to do if the source is shabby.

**Update** 6/2013
So far my experience has been well with Sony Movie Studio 12. The only problems I have encounter so far is that it can freeze up if you are editing movies that you ripped off from blu-ray discs (I was working with anime movies), especially if you convert them to MP4 or AVI. The rendered movie is jittery and does not play smoothly in the timeline or final output. The only way to work it is to use WMV.

Download option is only 32 bit and has no soundtracks 17 Aug. 2013

I'm a big fan of downloading purchased software vs. waiting for a DVD to arrive, but in this case I wish I had ordered the disc. The download version is only 32 bit, and best I can tell, the 20 music soundtracks that are supposed to come with it are not available with the download option. I believe the box version also comes with 3D glasses as well, but I can't really complain that those weren't downloaded! But when I pay more for the download option, which seems backwards to begin with, and I get less, it's a little frustrating.

The good news is, after installing and registering the 32-bit version, I was able to download the 64-bit version directly from Sony. But I have yet to figure out how to get the 20 music soundtracks that are supposed to come with Movie Studio Platinum 12.

As for the software itself, it's great. It's a 5 star program, but it gets 4 stars on Amazon for the download only containing the 32-bit version and no soundtracks.
