Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Are you looking for the ultimate digital music player? Are you tired of toting around multiple electronic gadgets? If so, you've landed on the right device. It's no illusion: the Sony MZ-DH10P has combined a Hi-MD Walkman Digital Music Player with a 1.2 MP Digital Camera to give birth to the ultimate 2-in-1 personal electronic device!

The built-in 1.2 megapixel digital camera stores images on MiniDisc media. The camera's 4x digital zoom will get you closer to the action. You can review, move, delete and share photos using the 1.5-inch TFT LCD screen. The colour screen will display images and data, such as personal photos, album art, artist, and track and album info, making it a dual-use screen for the camera and the digital music player. You can turn your camera into a mini-entertainment system by incorporating visual entertainment with your personal audio experience. The MZ-DH10P allows you to view a slide show of album art or personal photos while enjoying music. This recorder also comes equipped with Skip-Free G-Protection technology that provides virtually uninterrupted playback of your music. Music on the go has never been better!

The real gusto of this device is the digital music player. Music is stored on Hi-MD discs -- one GB of storage equals over 600 songs (depending on file format). Sony has included one Hi-MD disc with this player. You can easily expand your music storage with additional discs. They are available for only a few dollars, so increasing your storage capacity is affordable. Plus, this device is backward compatible with the standard MiniDisc media discs.

Sony had the digital music lover in mind when they built this digital player. It is highly compatible with your PC. With the included software you can transfer files from your PC to the MZ-DH10P, and vice versa, at a break-neck, 100x transfer speed. And while you're doing this, you won't have to worry about your digital music player's battery life -- the USB cable will power the unit when transferring music. Speaking of battery life, you can expect up to 14 hours of continuous playback with the included lithium-ion rechargeable battery pack.

If you already have extensive music libraries, use the included software to store and play back your collection of MP3s. On the other hand, if you're just getting into digital music and downloading, Sony's ATRAC format provides higher sound quality with smaller sizes than many competing formats. This enables you to store more music and have longer listening times. You can also play back the most popular Internet audio formats, including WMA and WAV files, with quick, easy conversion to ATRAC.

Sony just keeps on bringing you the hits with this device. Another great feature is the self-recording upload function. Use the line-in jack on the Hi-MD player to transfer and archive your favorite, old tapes to low cost Hi-MD discs. The mic input is a perfect solution for self-recordings, school concerts, or meetings. With your music or recordings stored on Hi-MD discs, you can transfer the files to your computer and covert them to WAV format. A file saved in WAV format provides you with the flexibility to import the file into a music burning software program where you can burn the file to a CD-R/RW. The MZ-DH10P from Sony is not only a digital music player, but also a mini-recording studio in the palm of your hand. You can capture and digitise almost any sound or old-school recorded format with the mic input and line-in jack!

Good points: Sounds fine, small and light, 1.3Mpx pictures fine, useful to have MP3, and useful as file transfer medium.
Bad Points: Sony's site (and others) specify things it doesn't actually have (!) NO analogue in, NO digital in (apart from the USB, of course), battery source is limited to SONY proprietary type.
Also, European model doesn't have the adjustable graphic equaliser, and the stereo is limited to 2.8+2.8 mW (US/Canada/Japan 5+5); if the source happens to be relatively quiet, this simply will not go loud enough, and I do have good hearing!
Also Bad: 'carry case' is a felt bag (!), can't upload existing MD content to the computer, and the now the worst part...
ALL of the music content has to be encrypted by the supplied software - or it won't play! - it won't let you do things with your own music. You can't upload from minidisc after writing without deleting it from the minidisc (can't write-protect or it won't do it at all!) - and sometimes it counts the number of times you save your own music and won't allow you to save it again. I would throw the software away if there were a means to record a playable track onto the disc without it! I have to rip and transcode all my CDs using third party software so it is kept safe, and then I have to use SONY's software to store it on disc. A very frustrating affair - if I'd known this before I bought it I probably wouldn't have bothered buying it.

    Minidisc Perfection!! 26 Jan 2008
    Amazon Verified Purchase
TOP OF THE RANGE IN EVERY WAY!!!
This beautiful machine has mostly been designed and created for Minidisc users that demand quality and perfection that surpasses MP3/Ipod players in every way.
This unit handles PCM sound, in other words "EXACT SOUND" that you hear in the highest quality available WITHOUT ANY COMPRESSION!!!
That is something that even the latest Ipod cannot offer.

This player can also be used as a Re-writable drive on your pc!!!

Another feature is the built in camera (including flash) which gives you the option of taking photos and keeping them on your discs with the ability of viewing on the front of your minidisc player.

So in other words... If you are lucky enough to find one of these rarities for sale, BUY THIS PLAYER IMMEDIATELY!!!
