Amazon.co.uk Review

The Sony MZ-R900 Recordable MiniDisc Walkman is one smart-looking player. It sports a full metal jacket and a plethora of buttons and controls. It's incredibly small too; you have to wonder where all the electronics are. There's a remote, complete with LCD screen and a comprehensive set of controls. This is a little too chunky to let dangle though, so there's a clip on the back to attach it to your clothing. There's a smart rotary control, which is neat, but really needs two hands to operate. The small buttons can be awkward, when trying to name a long list of tracks for example.

Sony claims it will play back for up to 66 hours, which is a tad optimistic, especially when you start playing with all the features. It does have an exceptionally long battery life though, thanks to its low-power electronics. There's an internal rechargeable battery or you can use normal batteries with a little clip-on unit.

This player has just about every feature currently available on any Portable MiniDisc player. It's a full recording player, supporting LP2 and LP4 long play modes, although LP4 does mean a noticeable degradation in music quality. It'll record from both digital and analogue sources. There's a bit-rate converter so any digital source will do. Recording from analogue requires a special cable, which is just about the only accessory not supplied. There's also Sony's G-Protection system to stop skipping, which is excellent. All these functions inevitably mean you're going to need to refer to the manual a lot initially, but the documentation is sufficient and readable enough that this is a painless exercise.

The MZ-R900 is a state-of-the-art player. It looks good, performs superbly and is well-built. If you are looking for a high-end MiniDisc player, then this model should definitely be at the top of your shopping list--Miles Berkeley

Product Description

The Sony MZ-R900 Recordable MiniDisc Walkman is the flagship model in the recordable range. It's small, light, oozes style and boasts the world's longest Stamina battery life for a recordable MiniDisc Walkman, giving up to 66 hours of battery life using the supplied rechargeable batteries in combination with Stamina batteries (not supplied). It also has a joint text function that allows all the data on a CD (including CD text, where applicable) to be transferred when recording from CD to MD. It offers digital sound preset, and playback speed control, and of course the MDLP recording mode, not bad for the smallest MDLP MiniDisc recorder ever. The MDLP feature offers the user two or four times the playing time of Standard Play in digital stereo, allowing up to 320 minutes playing time on one 80 minute MiniDisc - that's over five hours!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for all teenage techo junkies, 31 Jul 2001
This is Sony's top mini-disc walkman, and you can tell by its sleek design and easy to use functions. This recorder is very easy to use once it has been connected to PC or stereo, the easy to understand instructions making it childs play. The LCD remote controller is a dream to use, and makes it easy to use when on the move. It can also be use with other sony products which can interface with a remote. This mini-dosc recorder/player is a must for all teenage techo junkies. Its sleek style makes it look fashionable but the high price tage makes it a long-time saver option. It performs perfectly and will bring years of faithful recording and playing. A must-buy and worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Star Performer, 28 Jul 2001
By A Customer
I have had the fortune to own a few of Sony's wonderful MD players and this is with out doubt the best I have ever had. There is nothing I can fault with this machine, the clarity of sound, features and functionality of this machine are all faultless. This is the first machine that I have had with the long play functionality and I love it. Yes, there is a slight decrease in audio level but this is far offset with the ability to hold typically 5 albums of music on 1 80 minute disc. Love this, well done Sony.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic but Fiddly, 3 Oct 2001
By A Customer
With exceptional sound quality (5 stars) and typical Sony workmanship and style (5 stars), I am however baffled at the controls (1 star) and the need for a separate, screw-on case for the 'dry' battery(-1 star). [This is used in conjunction with the rechargeable for 'long battery life'. If it had been just a little bit bigger it could have taken the battery internally.]
Despite my ego, I have to admit that I am not a bright young thing any more (I'm a tad over 21 for the 20+ish time) but I do want quality items of the latest technology. It came as a nasty shock when, having bought it based on the sound played to me by an assistant, I tried to use the machine on my own.
It is not intuitive; the buttons are small; the contols on the remote are inconveniently placed, pointless and gimmicky and could have been used for standard controls; the backlight on the remote's display doesn't last long enough and is virtually impossible to read without. The asymetrical headphones are also a nightmare as the connecting cable is too short unless you use them with the remote which is cylindrical, bulky, catches on things and was dispensed with on the second day! If Sony saw the need for a small, flat player, then why not a small, flat rectangular remote with 1 or 2 rows of controls instead of the cylindrical lump?
These are not the ramblings of a misery-guts, but a serious critique of the machine. It is a superb piece of engineering and a delight to listen to - and to have the capability to have a whole audio book on one disk is just brilliant.
Despite having to consult the manual to find out which of the plethora of functions are of any real use, given the time taken to operate, I am really pleased to have bought it. I'd recommend it for the non-teenage/Yuppy market - but try operating it in a shop before you buy.
