With Hi-MD technology, users can record up to 45 hours of music at up to 100 times transfer speed on one disc, while still enjoying the extensive battery life, compact design and robustness for which MD players are recognized. Removable, re-recordable Hi-MD media provides music lovers with unlimited storage capacity to build an infinite library of their favorite songs.
Hi-MD Walkman recorders incorporate the ATRAC3plus format, which enables the user to burn more audio files to Hi-MD or indeed standard MiniDisc. ATRAC3 is a high quality audio compression technology that Sony developed to effectively reduce the size of audio files while preserving more of the sound quality. The new Hi-MD equipment is compatible with existing MiniDiscs, although the new Hi-MD discs will not operate with the older systems.
Why choose Hi-MD over Hard Disc (HDD)?
Unlimited Capacity - Where as HDD has a fixed capacity, Hi-MD offers you the flexibility of choosing the capacity you want, from 1GB to 200GB.
Battery Life - Hi-MD uses a removable AA battery that gives you up to 27 hours of life, compared with around 8 hours from HDD, a figure that diminishes as the battery ages.
Music and Data Recorder - Hi-MD allows you to record directly from Hi-fi, giving you high quality microphone recordings. HDD simply doesn't give you this option.
Shareable Media - HDD has a fixed capacity, embedded disc where the Hi-MD offers removable, low cost and variable capacity discs. With HDD, if you lose your hard disc, you lose everything but Hi-MD gives you the opportunity to store your data safely on removable discs.
Robust Media - If you crash your hard disc by dropping it, the HDD format means you lose everything. Hi-MD is very durable, scratch proof and shock resistant.
Sound Quality - HDD offers MP3 sound quality but Hi-MD offers Sony's unique Atrac3Plus high sound quality, reducing the size of the files but maximizing the purity and tone of the recording.

The box contained:
The MD player
A set of earphones
A CD of bundled software
A USB cable
and the manual
When I first powered it up the first thing that hit me was... how quiet it was, not just quiet, silent!!! so no more whizzing of gears from the old days of CD players:)
The downloading was... AMAZING!!! i plugged it in and was pleasantly surprised to find XP recognises it as a mass storage device so you can use the MDs as data CDs. I bought 10 normal 80 minute MDs and discovered that, because the player treats them as data disks, you can store much more on them than a conventional netMD. The software was easy to use as all you have to do is import files from your music (SonicStage gives you an option to search out all the music files on your PC. if like me you have a lot, dont use this as it will take ages:)) the converting and burning are done simultaneously which makes it so much easier as you can set it off and leave it.
Playback is sooo easy, it sorts out all the music into albums and then you can easily navigat your way through a lot of music.
in conclusion, if you are looking for a modern minidisk with a lot of features, but you are on a budget, go for it
