Amazon.co.uk Review
The Sony MZ-G750 Recordable MiniDisc Walkman has all you need for high-class portable sound--a recordable MiniDisc complete with radio in one neat package. Sony has decided to add a radio into its range of portable MiniDisc players, effectively giving you two portables in one. It has managed to keep the size down too; MZ-G750 is little bigger than other players in the range. It's a handsome beast and despite being relatively light it's well constructed and sturdy. Power is supplied by a single AA battery, the compartment for which adds a bulge to the back of the otherwise beautifully compact body.
The list of features is impressive. It'll handle Sony's LP2 and LP4 recording modes, which squeeze even more music onto a single disc. You do lose quality though, and the highest level is best left to spoken word recordings. Putting so many functions on a tiny device does mean it can get fiddly to control and some functions require delving through a good few menus. There's a remote control unit halfway along the cable that is a trifle bulky, but manages to pack an amazing number of functions.
The sound quality is excellent, one of Sony's strengths. It provides a crisp and detailed sound right across the range without being overly sharp or bright. Radio reception is remarkably good too. The headphone wire doubles as the FM antenna and there are 40 pre-sets to store your radio stations. Amazingly the radio takes more power than the MiniDisc. Battery life is generally very good though. It comes complete with an external adapter for when you are at home, useful since recording is the one job that will eat batteries pretty quickly. You can record from either a digital or analogue source, although you'll need to buy an extra cable for analogue recordings. One small disappointment is that you cannot record from the radio; it is switched off when you operate the device in MiniDisc mode. The earphones are Sony's little in-ear affairs, decent enough but a player of this quality could usefully be used to drive something a little meatier. The MZ-G750 is a superb piece of hardware, it has all the features and capabilities of Sony's other highly desirable MiniDisc players, but with a radio on top. --Miles Berkeley
