A solid device but has several annoyances,

This review is from: Sony MEX-BT3900U Bluetooth USB CD/Mp3 Car Stereo (Radio Tuner,Front Aux Input) (Electronics)
As you would expect from a Sony radio of this price, the device the on the whole performs very well. The bluetooth phone connection works flawlessly, as does the iPod connection. But there are a few annoying issues... - USB socket is not lit up (unlike on other radios) so plugging in a USB stick at night is very fiddly. - The TA/AF option button is stupid and annoying! - The display animates every time you switch modes, this is also really annoying. - The default blue illumination is very bright, I've set mine to red. - The display does not auto dim at night (unlike other radios). Other points... - Users report radio reception can be poor but I've turned off the 'Regional' setting and found no problems. - Users have reported bugs in the software (e.g. muting with TA on) but I've not found any problems at all. If you can put up with the annoying points listed above, it's an excellent device and I'm pleased with my purchase.

After spending more than 15 days to choose the best affordable bluetooth radio,I found sony BT3900u to be the best in all aspect.I specially bought for PBAP and opp bluetooth profiles. It came with all the required cables and connectors so fitted exactly in my Vauxhall Astra MK4 within 15 min.The sound quality and the options for sound settings is brilliant giving at the most comfort.compared to some of the users problem reported here is my 100% genuine checked report.1) Illumination too bright at night---there are 2 options choose red or blue secondly there is an option called dimmer which works well to keep brightness at low. 2) PBAP works fine with iphone4 I can see redial list, caller's name 3) preset speed dail (ObjectPushProfile) doesn't work with iphone as iphone's bluetooth doesn't allow transferring contacts. But then technologies are made and broken by humans.I transferred the contact details through my wife's HTC mobile via bluetooth. it works fine now with iphone paired to Bt3900 and can dial directly from preset numbers 1 to 6. 4) There is a inbuilt microphone which works very well,no need for external microphone. 5) some users reported AF/TP doesn't work.I think it doesn't work if you are manaully setting the station in that case you have to set manually RDS stations as well. The best way is to use BTM setting which scans automatically all the stations including AF/TP.Mine works very well. Additional Info: 1) comes with remote control which don't think is of much use. 2) I didn't found option in settings to shut the front speakers and listen only through rear speakers as I used to do with my old Kenwood but not a big deal compared to the fabulous sound quality. 3) SMS indication doesn't work.I don't think its an issue from sony.probably not supported by iphone but again not a big deal. By the time I installed and reviewed the item the price has gone down but no regret, its 100% worth buying this product.

Very simple to install (into a (51) Ford Focus ) you'll need the extra wiring harness though. The bluetooth connection to my Nokia 5800 worked seemlessly and when you are on a call the callers voice is clear and the caller has no problems hearing what you're saying. Audio stream from my phone works well also. This product has very clear operating instructions so even if your not tech. savvy you'll have no problems with it.
