I have to say these headphones were great, I'm no audiophile, but even I could notice the difference between these and the rubbish I was using before.

However, completely out of the blue the right ear cup has stopped working. I have contacted Sony and they say that they only offer 90 days warranty and after that the headphones are not repairable. I basically have to throw them away!
Not happy about this at all, so will think twice before purchasing Sony again.

4 stars for the headphones and 1 for the Sony service.

The Sony MDR-ZX700 are a relatively low cost headphone, I paid about £60 for mine and I am very happy for the price.

They are a small sized headphone overall so are good for portable use but still have large enough cups to be be an over-ear design. The construction is almost all plastic but it is of good quality, the size adjustment hinges are smooth so they do not always stay in place. This couple with the fact that it is a very light headphonem and that there is very little clamping force on the head, mean that they isolate reasonably well and do not leak as much as some headphones, but will never be perfect, for me the sacrifice is worth the comfort with the very soft faux leather pads and headband.

The short cable and low impedance, make them ideal for use with a portable device such as a MP3 player or smartphone but they are also good for home use as well (how I used them). A detachable cable but be an improvement but is not common at this price, also they do not fold or come with a case so for portable use this must be considered.

The ZX700 have a very neutral sound across the frequency range so will be suitable for almost all types of music, though electronic and hip-hop fans may feel they are a little bass light. With the flat response however these are open to using an equalizer if one is available on your portable device and software at home. The clarity is very good, instruments can be picked out quite well and subtle details do not get lost in the rest of the music which is very hard to find with headphones of this price so this surprised me.

Unlike many other headphones brands the price on these is similar to US pricing so these can seem much better price when comparing the competition's products at the same level. Overall this headphone exceeded my expectations and I would say they are a great value for money and i would highly recommend them.

I thought long and hard about buying these headphones. I have a pretty good hi-fi set up with Linn CD player Naim pre-amp power amp and separate power supply driving Pro-ac speakers. This delivers a fantastic sound which is really easy to listen to.
I bought these phones to listen to music on my i pod whilst playing drums but have also spent quite a lot of time just listening to music without hitting anything at the same time
The sound is warm and balanced. I think the bass sound is integrated but doesn't dominate. I don t really need a booming bass sound anyway. I prefer mid and balanced treble. The overall sound could be a bit more "open" but perhaps with an over ear phone this expectation is un-realistic
The fit is really comfortable and they are really well made
I suspect buying headphones is a bit like buying hi-fi; there is a law of diminishing returns eventually where you have to spend a lot more money for very little improvement in sound. I think these headphones represent good value for money and I m really happy with them

Has sliced bread just got bettered? Genuine Hi Fi 'phones for 65 smackers!.

Firstly, they are studio monitor 'phones, so you don't have the sound obfuscating added confection of all my other 'phones. This means you hear the music as close as possible to how it was recorded, which is initially weird until your ears can adjust;about an hour. This is done by having a large 50m driver and a frequency response of 5 - 40,000Hz. All it's competitors can do is max out at 29,000Hz, with a 40mm driver. In real terms you get amazing penetration and revealment, a pure and clean sound through all the low middle and highs, with no woolly bass or harsh discordant highs- you'll go deaf long before this- and an out of this world performance from the most modest portables. My Pure Evoke-3 DAB radio has a max output of 8 watts yet with opera recorded onto a humble sd card, you are almost in the concert hall.

At the other end of the scale, it can't magic -fy 1920's mono jazz except with some slight sound body volume, and with 1950's opera you can hear the hiss of the mastertape in the background..well in the background mind.

The ideal demographic for this 'phone would be those who's taste has grown beyond bass dominant urban, albeit it does a fine job with rap r'n'b etc. With the remastered 'Lady in Satin' by Billie Holiday, I'm standing next to her by the mike as she is singing; headphones can get no finer praise, unless you buy it's daddy, the Z1000, which has a frequency range of 5-80,000Hz...strewth!. Most of the 'phone experts on youtube say this is the best in it's price range( the mdr-zx700) as well.

I bought these toward the end of 2013 to replace some Sony XB's I'd had for 2 years. the sound quality, just coming through my phone's mp3 player, was superb. Clear treble and deep bass. They have lasted excellently, working as well as the day I got them. Nice and sturdy, comfy to wear, and they look awesome.
