Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Great quality sound across a range of frequencies is guaranteed with the new generation XB500 headphones from Sony. A large 40mm driver unit means ultra-low frequencies are smooth and tight, while the mid-range and treble are balanced and clear, thanks to a high power neodymium magnet. Whether you’re in the mood for thumping dance, powerful drum and bass or complex electronica, this combination of technologies makes sure your music has optimal definition and clarity. Total enclosure is achieved thanks to a new vibe structure which has a tightly sealed acoustic design, making you feel like you’re right there on the dance floor or in the best seats at the gig. It works the other way round too, creating noise isolation so you won’t share your music with other people. With impressive sound quality taken care of, the black metal XB500 headphones boast a design that combines style with practicality. King-size urethane leather earpads, a wide flat headband and tangle-free cord provide effortless comfort so you can keep listening for as long as you like. Weighing in at just 185 grams, these are the ‘phones to be seen in, wherever you go.

The perfect balance of sounds
A huge frequency response range, from an ultra-low 4Hz right up to 24,000Hz, is guaranteed by a neodymium magnet for crisp mid- and high-range sounds. That means you can be sure frequencies are amazingly balanced as well as accurately reproduced, and the subtleties of a track are revealed. Lose yourself in your music and reduce sound leakage with the XB500’s new direct vibe structure. This tightly sealed acoustic design allows for a high level of sound isolation. It’s made possible by the integration of gaskets – a rubbery material – and sealing components which ensure that all the sounds now reach your ears. If it’s volume you’re after, super-sensitive 104 microwatts means these headphones can output spectacularly loud sound.

As you would expect, the technical spec is rounded off by an oxygen free copper voice coil and gold-plated L-shaped stereo mini plug. Both ensure sound quality is maintained by minimising degradation through the wire.

Get closer to your music with EXTRA BASS
Sony didn’t call these headphones EXTRA BASS (XB) for nothing. Powerful new technologies are the secret behind the XB500’s ability to recreate the club atmosphere with extra bass. Engineered exclusively by Sony, these headphones feature the large 40mm deep bass HD driver unit, which includes a newly developed long-stroke diaphragm. Highly corrugated and hard-wearing, the diaphragm enables the reproduction of a smooth bass line. The driver’s also been designed to keep vibration to a minimum so the sound you hear is impressively clear.

Listen for longer in stylish comfort
A brushed black metal finish adds to the luxurious feel of the XB500 headphones. Their flat, wide headband edged with a hairline metal line and king-size, chunky urethane leather ear cushions complete the stylish design. These two features also ensure that the headphones feel great too, offering lasting and unbeatable comfort. The cushions fit snugly round your ears, bringing additional sealing for a better acoustic performance. The seamless headband sits lightly on the head, so you can wear the XB500 headphones all day long, and into the night.

They’re complemented by a 1.2m durable and lightweight cord, which is flat on both sides. So you can move around and mix it up without getting in a tangle. Put it all together and the XB500 headphones are still surprisingly light at 185 grams, making them easy to wear, and to carry. And as an added little extra there’s a carry pouch, so you can pop your XB500s in any bag and know they’re safe.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the non-audiophile user 4 May 2010
The Good:
Phenomenally comfortable, leather-esque pads that are like a big hug for your ears and a padded headband-thingy
Reasonable sound isolation for the user
Despite the focus on bass these will play all music beautifully and will encourage you to listen to all of your old favourites again(including twiddly classical pieces and my own personal favourite of Chamber pop - as iTunes calls it)
Flat cable means its never got tangled, not once.

The Bad:
Zilch, these things are pretty flaw free for this price, audiophile reviews can tell you more if you're into your perfect reproduction

The Ugly (for beauty is in the eye of the beholder):
Huge, and if you're a self concious chappy then you may not want to wear them in the library or on the bus
Your ears get hot, though in my digs the rest of you is often freezing so its a nice change
Will leak sound quite a bit, so not good if you're a secret Glee fan and don't want your mates to find out

Personal Musings:
The MDRXB500 are the middle of the XB range with a 40mm driver unit. Not being a bass head I have no idea what a 40mm driver units all about, so you may ask why buy headphones which are all about bass? (especially as I listen to the likes of Belle and Sebastian)

In short I was a sucker for their advertising on Last.fm as I sat with uncomfortable earphones whilst writing reports in university and bought these as a reward for handing everything in on time (after surfing the reviews and finding that they have practically mythical levels of comfort).

Armed with these giant cans and a dangerous levels of coffee I've battled with 5 years worth of revision over the last month and haven't had a single gripe. I was concerned that these would show up all the awfulness of internet radio quality or drown my baroque-rock collection in big boomy bass yet this was not the case, they sounded great which is really what you buy cans for.

Fantastic

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 12 Sep 2009
Easily the best headphones I have owned. I had a pair of sennhieser closed back 202s before these, the sound quality dropped quickly and were very uncomfortable after a few hours of wearing them. These however, are extremely comfortable, the sound quality is fantastic and they look very stylish on your head. Definitely a 5 star buy. (the small bag they give you for storage is also very useful)

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved by a bass freak 15 Aug 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase
Bought these as my first pair of headphones thanks to the huge emphasis on bass as I'm a bit of a bass freak! I have to say that these have definitely surprised me as to how much bass they can actually squeeze in, everything I've thrown at them which sometimes make my Creative earphones distort, these headphones took with ease.

Bass is the focus but not the only aspect carried out excellently by these - listening to Eminem - We Made You almost blew me away with a sharp crisp beat as well as crisp everything else! Vocals and treble were handled fine.

Good allround buy that I'm happy I forked out the cash for.

They produce astounding sound, but at high volumes they leak way to much, that's the only negative about these headphones.
