They do not, and should not be expected to, give the same sound quality as full-sized headphones.

The sound cancelling is superior to Sony's other analogue ear-phones and having tested them in the office, on the bus and on a train I can say the NC works very well indeed. However prospective buyers should be aware that they rely on the correct fitting, so you will need to select the correct ear pad (cup?), and there is a background hiss which is audible when no music is playing or the music is very quiet.

They are more than adequate for listening to MP3s which is really what they are for, i.e. use with portable music players, and certainly as good as any earphones I have previously used (and better than a lot). The bass response is good and music sounds clear and detailed (but then I am not an audiophile!). I cannot comment on the battery life at this time, other than to say that I have used them for about 8 hours in total and the battery indicator is still on maximum.

The earphones are supplied with extension cable for the jack, the standard lead for which is short, a leather carrying case, cable storage and clip and an airline headphone adapter.

I have not found any way to buy replacement ear pads and the electronics/battery box is a little heavy (although it feels very substantial).

Overall I think the performance is excellent and I am delighted with them.

I bought these after testing several other active noise canceling headphones. Previously I have used, for instance, Sony MDRNC22W, Sony MDR-NC60, some Philips over-the-neck ones, also noise isolating headphones such as Sony MDR-EX500LP and Sennheiser IE 7. What I wanted was headphones with good sound quality such as e.g. Sony MDR-EX500LP (which are really great!) and at the same time good noise canceling capabilities such as e.g. Sony MDRNC22W. Whilst noise canceling in Sony MDRNC22W and Sony MDR-NC60 works fine, the sound quality is poor with almost no lower tones (good for audiobooks but not for music). On the other hand Sony MDR-EX500LP possess superb sound (relative to the price obviously) but provides only a passive noise canceling, which means one needs to listen with volume pumped up. Now, Sony MDRNC300D is exactly what I was looking for, i.e. a combination of both, namely excellent noise canceling with very good sound quality comparable to that of Sony MDR-EX500LP! The only drawbacks are: first of all price, and, second of all, quite bulky control unit. However, both of these are far from being unreasonable. Summarising, I do recommend these.

Having read the critical reviews here, and after buying and testing now, I find it hard to understand the disappointment of some writers.
The noise canceling effect seems to work very well with constant noise, and, to my surprise, quite usefully even with e.g. unwanted music from a neighbor.
Discussing sound level changes using numbers like per cent and/or dB is a bit tricky, especially if one is not familiar with the terminology and the physical qualities of sound.
But, bearing in mind that 20 dB equals roughly to a hundred-fold change, it is easier to get a picture. Without measurements, but having some knowledge and experience of sound physiology in occupational medicine, I do not find the promised figures unrealistic.
There are, of course, limitations as to what you cant expect in terms of sound quality, but alltogether, my only complaint is that without battery current you can't use this set at all.

Does what it says on the tin!
Sony's previous entries in terms NC in-ears have been disappointing to say the least (the NC33s I had before this gave hardly any active noise cancelling and weren't that great... Read more

Not very good.
Normally I like Sony kit but these are just not up to scratch. Poor noise canceling, high battery consumption and, due to the control unit, uncomfortable. Read more

Noiser Cancellers
These noise limiters do an excellent job and add value to the sounds you really want to hear. Expensive but worth it.

Overall great NC earphones!!
Tested these earphones in both busy airport terminals (wideband NC mode 'C'), and noisy turbo-prop domestic commuter flights (low frequency band NC mode 'B'). Read more

Disappointing
Very good noise cancelling but disappointing sound quality. Music sounds muffled and lack of depth. Poor battery life.

Fit for purpose
I bought these after returning a pair of Sony nc33 in-ear noise cancelling ear-buds, which cancelled absolutely no noise whatsoever on my regular turbo-prop flight home. Read more
