Natural, dynamic hi-fi sound quality from a headphone
Natural, dynamic hi-fi sound quality from a headphone

Your Entertainment As Loud As You Like

You know how it is. You want to watch a movie with the volume cranked up while your other half wants to read in silence. And every time you inch the volume above a whisper, there's a domestic. Tricky situation but one you can resolve very simply with a set of wired open back home entertainment headphones.

Made for movies, music and gaming with big drivers and long cords. Connect up and enjoy concert-hall sound and front row thrills. Be right there in the thick of the action when playing games and not a moan or groan to taint your pleasure. The neighbours stay relaxed too.

Open back headphones deliver a much wider, more dynamic sound quality than closed back ones. Think weightless home theatre surround sound on your head. As the name suggests, open back headphones allow audio to move freely in and around the headphone speakers in much the same way as sound moves around your ears when listening to hi-fi audio. And because air is able to get to your cans, they don't overheat after hours of use so you can happily watch the entire Lord of the Rings box set in complete comfort.

These days, we watch more and more content on tablets, smartphones and laptops. But why have such easy access to all your favourite films, games and music if you're going to compromise your enjoyment using the built in speakers? Best to get yourself a pair of open back headphones and immerse yourself hook, line and sinker in the action.

MDR-MA300

Comfort is a big thing for you, especially when you're listening to music or watching the box. That's why these home entertainment headphones with a large 40mm driver and flexible ear fitting cups make perfect sense.

The three metre cable gives you ample length to relax and get comfy on the sofa whilst immersed in your favourite games, TV shows and movies. A broader range of frequencies means you'll hear more bass tones and higher notes, taking you closer to the action and the thrills of surround sound home theatre.

MDR-MA500

Slip them on when you want to watch TV or listen to music. Single sided cord gives you more freedom. Hear every sound and note with a high frequency range. Your perfect sofa companion.

The three metre cable gives you ample length to relax and get comfy on the sofa whilst immersed in your favourite games, TV shows and movies. Turn up the volume and feel the power of a neodymium magnet, a rare beast that provides incredible control over audio for the clearest possible sound. These headphones also benefit from a flexible ear fit mechanism which means the ear cups align themselves perfectly to the shape of your head. Great news for comfort but even better for performance as it means audio is being directed more accurately into your ear so you hear everything from an optimum angle.

MDR-MA900

The closest you'll get to 'no headphones' listening. These awesome cans pack in all the tech you need to put you right there at the heart of your favourite film, game or song. The fully open back design gives you insanely natural and expansive sound.

Good to wear? You bet. Lightweight and elegant in aluminium and magnesium so you'll hardly know you're wearing them. Better still, the flexible head cushion on the headband moulds to the shape of your head for even more comfort. These phones also feature our first ever 70mm driver which delivers beautifully spacious sound so you can hear every fine detail. Bang smack in the middle of the ear cups is an Acoustic Bass Lens which focuses bass response to give you an impressive low end punch that adds drama to your entertainment.

MDR-MA100

All your favourite TV shows, films and games in perfect clarity. You don't have to sit there suffering in silence. Slip on these headphones and listen as loud as you want.

The two metre cord is long enough to let you sit back, get comfy and enjoy your favourite music and movies whilst the soft fabric earpads make for hours of fatigue free listening. Or why not plug into your tablet and catch up on the latest TV shows on 4OD or BBC iPlayer in high quality, dynamic sound.

MDR-MA102TV

You're a television addict but who cares? You don't invade anyone's space or time with these high quality headphones. Sporting a 5 metre cord and in line volume control, they put you in charge of your favourite movies and TV shows. Every living room should have a set.

Open headphones is designed purely to listen at home.

Setup: Dell E6420 laptop, external soundcard External Sound Card USB 6 Channel 5.1 Audio, J River Media Center.

Youtube driven playlists: mozart to "Cat Daddy"
Current favourite: Adele 19 and 21 in FLAC lossless format ripped from Vinyl.

The fabric ear cups feel clouds.
I normally find the mid-end leather headphones uncomfortable. My ears get really hot.
Fits my big head (XL size ski helmet).

Comfort
-Lightweight.
-head band is not too tight
-Semi-open -MA900 is completely open
-Ear pads is cloth not pleather, I could wear this for hours without sweat.
-I removed the grills (3 screws) to shave off a few more grams and allows the driver to "float" completely on my ear. The driver is held in the center by plastic fabric.
-not recommended for the hairless as there are no pads on the headband itself, you could get yourself tennis racket handle cushion and wrap it.

-Long and thick 3 meter cord allows me walk to the kitchen to make a cup of tea

Sound Quality
It's very flat and neutral, like studio monitors. Has no character. But this leaves you a blank canvas to play any music.
You'll need an amp with an equalizer to adjust to your tastes. People who like bass can still get the bass, it's enough to vibrate the headband without much distortion.

It's one of the cheapest non-pleather ear pad headphones available in the market (the smaller MA100 is less).

These are worth it just for the excellent imaging and soundstage, the sound quality is very good , the only issue i can sight is that the bass is a little flabby , this may improve with burn in.
These are the most comfy headphones i own (and i own a lot).
I would be happy with these for anything under £50 to be honest, wonder what the ma500 is like!

Needed a good set of budget headphones for pluging into my guitar amp so as not to disturb my neighbours and also for occasional use through my hi-fi system. Returned a set of Panasonic phones due to very poor sound quality and after reading reviews it came down to the Sennheiser 201s or these Sonys. Went for the Sonys and when I got them home was totaly blown away by the quality of sound they produce, crystal clear across the whole sound spectrum, they must be the best budget phones on the market, buy them, you wont be dissappointed, highly recommended.

Very comfortable and ideal for long sessions of usage. Not noise isolating though if that's what you're after, allows you to hear your surroundings which is ideal for me as I just want to keep from disturbing others but can still carry on a conversation without removing them. Does allow some noise leakage so mightn't suit every situation.

For the price, they are very hard to beat - clear sound, yet plenty of bass. They do leak sound, due to the open design, so are not very suitable for public use. I would also prefer a single cord rather than cables going to both ears.

Very comfy; I frequently wear these for 6 hours or more at a time. Lovely sound reproduction but can be loud for those around you.

I was sucked in by the supposed benefits of open back headphones. Supposedly, open-back headphones produce a more realistic sound. Do they or don't they? I don't know. I DO know that they struggle to produce low frequency sound at an acceptably high amplitude. I'm sat here with the bass knob turned up to maximum, and the graphic equalizer set to increase low frequencies and the bass is just about acceptable. So if you love bassy music, perhaps go for closed back headphones.

Really impressed with these headphones. For the price the sound quality is nicely balanced across the frequency range. The best feature though is that they are so comfortable you quickly forget that you are wearing headphones at all. If you have a small head you might struggle for a good fit without additional padding - I wear them in the fully retracted position and I would say that my head is average size.
