Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The MDR-V500DJ closed supra-aural headphones provide top-end comfort and sound quality. The headphones are part of Sony's Studio Monitor Series and are built with high-end materials using advanced sound engineering. They are designed to meet the demands of professional and high fidelity users. Sony's closed type headphones allow only a limited amount of ambient noise into the ear canal, giving your attention fully to the music. The padded earcups fit comfortably, hour after hour. For those who like to use the headphones for single-sided monitoring, these MDR-V500s come with swivel earcups. The earcups are also reversible, and have been designed to be comfortable for on-shoulder use. The supra-aural design is engineered for excellent listening comfort. With this design, the earcups rest lightly on the ear, while the driver units are positioned along the ear canal for ideal sound transport. The wide, molded headband distributes the headphone's weight evenly. The headphones are foldable for easy storage and portability; when folded, the headphones will easily fit in a backpack or purse. The three meter cord (ten feet) is made of oxygen-free copper wiring for maximum conductivity and minimal noise.

Sony has installed several key features to these headphones to enhance their sound quality. The forty millimeter drive units delivers a deep bass sound and a wide dynamic range (the frequency range extends down to 10 Hz.) Both the stereo mini-plug and the UniMatch phone plug are gold-plated to make sure sound is transported fully and accurately. The gold-plated treatment also helps resist corrosion and supports the headphones' high conductivity and low noise. The neodymium magnets allow for superb power at a minimum size; these magnets provide more magnetic energy than other inferior magnets. Finally, the PET diaphragm works to deliver low distortion.

Excellent fit, excellent compatibility, excellent portability and excellent sound: these headphones fit the bill for a sound professional.

I bought these headphones about 3 years ago, and they're still here, still pumping joy to my ears, still solid as ever. Sure, the thin plastic covering the sponges that surround the speakers is gone on one side, but the sponge itself is still intact. These headphones with normal use will most probably last you a long time.

But they clamp to your head like no tomorrow, ensuring that all their sounds do not escape your ear. I have them on about 3 to 5 hours a day, and i'm sure i've developped some form of brain damage due to the massive clamping. After 2.5 hours i begin to feel a sharp pain in my left ear, and i just HAVE to take them off. My mind gets torn between wanting to listen to sweet sweet music, and my brain is crying because my ear is oh-so painful. My left ear, i must add (because that's also where the connecting cable is on the headphones). The voices in my head tell me it's ok though, eventually my ear will sink into my skull and the headphones will rest on the bone, therefore no more pain.

The swivelling is good -- you can swivel it flat so it can fit in a messenger bag, or into a small(ish) lump to fit in a rather large hangbag. Hell, you can also swivel them around so you can feel like a DJ while you try to scratch using your ipod, resulting in the much loved "now you hear it now you don't" effect.

All in all, i live with the pain, because those are damn good headphones. 5000 stars for the sound quality, -4996 stars for the pain it now causes me.

    Certainly worth a look 24 July 2007

I enjoy all types of music from electronica to jazz to indie rock and can't stand the quality of sound that you get from in ear or on ear headphones. After considering a few different types of headphone I finally decided to go for these, and the gamble certainly paid off.
I use a Creative Zen Touch for listening to music, and the EQ settings really enabled me to bring out the best from these headphones.
They use ferrite magnets, not neodymium, and this may seem bad, yet this allows a superb overall sound, and does not mean that they produce a bass heavy sound, but instead allow every part of the range of the song to be emphasised, producing a crystal clear sound.
They come in a nice box, and are supplied with a superb gold plated jack. The swivel mechanism must be handled with care as it is slightly delicate, yet overall they are sturdy and solid. When first put on, they must be adjusted to the right size, otherwise they can be quite uncomfortable, yet this is very easy to do and just involves the sliding of the earcups. They are very soft, and shut out a large proportion of outside noise, even without active noise cancellation.
I went on a music tour of Italy with school, and we drove, so after a 25 hour journey in each direction, I have become quite accustomed to them. I originally thought that they would drain the power from my Zen quickly, yet they did not at all. The Zen lasted both journeys, even with the 40mm driver units to power 18 hours of listening in each direction, so I would assume that they are not much more power consuming than a standard pair of in ear headphones. I must, however, emphasise the fantastic battery life of the Creative Zen Touch, which is said, according to the box, to last 24 hours, so there may be some loss in battery life of other portable devices. They shut out most background noise, and despite other complaints, I have not found them uncomfortable at all.
After returning, I listened to a song with my original Zen headphones, which are good, and it was almost unbearable, as they seemed so tinny compared to the complete, all round, solid sound that is produced with the Sony MDR V500s. I am not a DJ, and so cannot report on whether they are adequate for DJing, yet from what I have heard, it is worth paying extra for the V700s for this purpose.
Also, they have enabled me to notice sounds within my songs that I swear I have never detected before!
They go very loud, especially when plugged into a high fi system or computer.
They fold up nicely, allowing easy transportation, and the cable will extend dramatically if listening at home.
The sound has never once distorted, yet at high volumes it can all kind of merge together, which worsens the clarity of the music.
My friends all immediately noticed the difference when tested, and so it shows that anyone will notice the difference.
If you, like me, enjoy your music and would like to further compliment it by buying a new pair of headphones, then I would certainly recommend these, as they give a superb sound, which will help you further enjoy your music. Take my advice, and buy a pair!

    solid headphones 15 Jun 2004
I was a bit afraid of buying these because so many people seemed to complain the bass is dodgy on them. However, I'm not an "audiophile" so I reckon they sound just fine. They seem well made, solid yet light. Also I have a small head and I still need to extend them slightly to fit (i.e. good for people with small heads!). The best thing is that I think they shut out sound extremely well. This means that its hard to hear anything else when wearing them (even when no sound coming through I can barely hear myself pressing keys on the keyboard). They also don't seem to leak any sound, so people sitting next to you can't hear anything even on a relatively high volume level (I think). The main alternative I looked at were the Technics RP-F550 headphones - I decided not to go for those because I reckon the look and feel of the Sonys is superior, and differences in sound quality is probably minimal.
