The Reviews Are In

“The Sony KDL-55HX853 is a really positive start for the company’s new range of TVs - we like this a lot.”

“Like most Sony products, the KDL-55HX853 has had obvious attention paid to its ergonomics, and consequently is a pleasure to use.”

“Edges are smooth, textures are described explicitly and motion is managed with the sort of unshowy authority that’s the hallmark of a capable product.”

“One area where the KDL-55HX853 scores comprehensively over every one of its nominal rivals is sound.”

The Verdict: “So taken as a complete package, there’s very little fault to be found with the KDL-55HX853. It’s delivery of white tones could be punchier, sure, and it’s not the most accomplished upscaler of DVDs we’ve ever seen, but these minuses are far outweighed by everything the Sony does well - we’re particularly taken with its outstanding black-tone facility, its motion- handling, its looks and its sound.”

“Sony gets its picture quality groove back."

“If you’re looking for a flatscreen with excellent image quality, a content-rich net portal and luscious design, then it’s a must-see.”

“If there’s better picture processing available at the moment, we haven’t seen it.”

T3 5* award

“Sony has pulled out all the stops to produce a sensational TV.”

"Somehow Sony also manages to deliver gorgeously vibrant colours and lovely bold whites in the same frame as the inkiest of blacks."

"Also mesmerising is how crystal clear and sharp pictures look."

"The word that best sums up our time with the 46HX853 can only be ‘wow’."

“The best LCD TV we’ve ever seen.”

Deep in the Amazon rainforest the camera picks out a rare species amongst the foliage. It's detailed scenes like this where the HX8 really gets to show off. All of our core range of TVs will improve detail, using our unique X-Reality picture technology. This means you see more in every scene, from the razor-sharp talons on the bird of prey to the intricacies of the jaguar's markings. However, if it's the best possible detail you're after then you’re in luck. The HX8 with Detail + uses our more advanced X-Reality Pro technology. This cleverly compares the scene on the screen with a built-in database of images to replicate minute details such as texture. This way, you'll see every drop of rain as it bounces off the rainforest canopy, exactly as the cameraman witnessed it.

The richest life-like colour

If you want to see things the way the director intended then excellent colour is vital. It must be life-like, which is where X-Reality picture technology comes in to play, enhancing colour as well as detail. But the difference between great colour and breathtaking, real-life colour is contrast – that's what sets the HX8 with Colour + apart from the crowd. You'll never miss the detail in the background of a creepy, dimly lit scene, or lose the striking contrast of a full moon on a pitch-black screen. Here comes the techie bit. Good contrast is all about where the LEDs that light the screen are positioned. Unlike LCDs and most LED TVs, our sophisticated local dimming method uses LEDs on not just one but two sides of the screen. These adjust in small clusters, giving much greater control over which parts of the screen are dark and light. That means brilliant whites to true, deep blacks and all the shades in between. Isn't it time you discovered what's lurking in the shadows?

There's one place you'll find everything you need for a great night in – Sony Entertainment Network. Catch up on TV programmes you've missed with BBC iPlayer or watch whole seasons of your favourite TV series through Netflix. Settle down to watch Wimbledon or the athletics on BBC Sport. Even share that video of you crashing your mountain bike on YouTube. Or just pour yourself a drink, get comfy and choose a blockbuster film fresh out of the cinema from Video Unlimited. It's all there in one place. You just have to choose what to watch, when you want to watch it.

Big, bold audio

The sharp crack of a twig, the sound of a V8 engine revving, the gasp around the stadium as someone misses a penalty. Sound is the other dimension. The HX8 comes with a stand that contains built-in speakers, which you may have heard referred to as a soundbar. With a soundbar, you'll hear all the raw growling noise in your movie, and the subtle sounds too, so what you're watching comes to life with a bang.

Smooth, real-life action

Imagine you're looking at a flick book. If you only saw one in every few pages you wouldn't get the full story. It's the same when you're watching some TVs. If it cannot progress between different images, called frames, quickly enough the result is movement becomes juddery or blurred. On the majority of our TVs we improve the appearance of movement on the screen with our motion technology. This smooths the sequences between images and reduces blur. However, if you want fast-paced action like a high-octane tennis match, a sweeping shot of a vast landscape or anything involving 3D then you will want a TV able to move between frames at the maximum possible speed. The techie phrase for measuring that speed is "native hertz", and the maximum possible is 200. The HX8 boasts Movement + which is our simple way of saying it has the highest possible level of native hertz. So you can be confident of seeing every detail, every second, without any blur or judder.

3D at its best

If you like to be on the edge of your seat while the action unfolds around you, there’s one way to do it. Full HD 3D. That’s clear, bright 3D pictures at the highest resolution. The HX8 uses a high-speed panel that’s four times faster than those used on TVs without 3D, so that you’ll get really smooth and vivid 3D pictures in any room at any time of day. None of the blurring you sometimes see on inferior 3D sets. If you love movies enough to want 3D at home, you’re going to want nothing short of a mind-blowing experience.

Planet and pocket friendly

Fancy saving a bit of money every month? TVs now come with an Energy Rating sticker that shows you how much energy they use, which is basically a reference for how much they are going to cost you on energy bills. An A or B energy-rated LED television uses up a lot less electricity than your average plasma. All of our TVs for 2012 are either A or B rated, which means you'll be saving money as you're entertained.

We decided to upgrade our ten-year old TV to something a bit more modern recently and so (as is usual when choosing an expensive gadget) I spent many evenings reading reviews of all manner of TVs. A couple of weeks of this and my head was done in - way too many options, acronyms and features when all we were looking for was a nice family TV. So after the initial rush of storing 55"+ TVs in my wishlist, my search became a little more focused.

I used a TV size calculator (the Which website has a very good one) - which lets you plug in the size of the TV and will then tell you how far away you need to sit from it to be able to get the best viewing (or vice versa). We could have gone to 55", but went for the smaller size TV for a couple of reasons: cost and also because we have two young children and I'm not sure sitting a few feet from a relatively large TV will be good for their eyes or necks.

So after a bit more procrastinating, I had whittled down a shortlist to this Sony and the Samsung 6300 Samsung UE55ES6300 3D Full HD 1080p Smart 3D LED TV with Wi-Fi built-in and Freeview HD and 2 x glasses included (New for 2012). Both highly-rated manufacturers. In the end, the decision was made after a visit to the local John Lewis store. The Sony had a glass screen and the Samsung didn't - not sure what type of screen the Samsung had (seemed a little soft), but the thought of small kids poking their fingers into an expensive screen was frightening. The Sony's glass screen can take a fair bit of prodding and can be cleaned very easily. The Samsung also came with a whole load of "Smart" features, of which we would probably not use 99% of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars stunning 18 Jun 2012

Style and build quality, as expected with Sony, is excellent the TV is very minimalist. Like an overgrown iPad, one sheet of gorilla glass with a very thin silver edging forming the only framing. Although when switched on, again like the iPad there is a black border around the picture behind the glass front. It would look super wall mounted. The TV sits on a thin sound bar arrangement for shelf mounting.

After watching trooping the colour this weekend the picture quality can only be described as stunning (or as my granddaughter would say AWESOME), its as simple as that. It demonstrated what this TV is capable of with a good source. Motion flow handling betters, I believe, the more expensive models from other leading brand offerings that I saw demonstrated.

Sound quality is excellent, especially speech, which is the clearest I have come across since the change to LCD televisions. High volumes not necessary.

One consideration which I missed when doing my research and watching demonstrations is that the gorrila glass is reflective, so in some rooms with windows to the side and rear of the viewing position may be an issue with day time viewing.

Shop around there are some good deals available. If there are better TV's around at this price and considerably more in some cases, then I did not come across them.

See EDIT at the bottom of this review.

Just got this TV a few days ago and I have to say I am really impressed with the picture quality. HD is awesome and even SD is as good as I've ever seen it on a large screen TV. I've not seen any banding or clouding anywhere in any conditions. The glass covering the screen is quite reflective and you might need to control reflections in strong light.

Full 3D is pretty good, but I've never had a 3D TV before, so it's difficult for me to say it's better than any other set. I went for the half price offer on 2 pairs of Sony TDGBR250 3D Glasses. Unfortunately they are not a very good fit over my prescription glasses. The lenses are too small and they end up sitting about half an inch in front of where they would be without my glasses. I went out and bought a pair of ready made glasses with smaller lenses that would fit inside the frame of the 3D glasses. That has helped a bit. The 3D glasses are quite heavy. The combined weight of my own glasses and the 3D means that the bridge of my nose is quite sore after a couple of hours watching a movie. I might try the newer light-weight Sony 3D glasses that are now available.

Converting 2D to 3D is of limited use for me. You don't really get much of a 3D experience with it. It's more like a mild sense of depth in the picture. I might be inclined to use it more if the glasses were a bit more comfortable to wear.

The colour out of the box was really quite good. I tweaked the picture settings a little, mainly contrast, brightness and backlight, and now I'm very happy with it. The blacks and whites a really pure, much better than I've ever seen in an LED/LCD TV. The colour is deep and has a great tonal range from dark to light.

I've had this TV for about 1 month now and bought it on the basis of the reviews here, so I thought I would add my own 5* review.

Setup is very easy, but you will need a cross-head screwdriver to put the stand together (about 10 screws). The instructions say you need two people, but I managed on my own. The difficult bit is picking the screen up and slotting into the stand.

The TV CAN and WILL topple over if you are not careful and don't bother tying it down... so if you have kids or animals, you would be well advised to make sure you have the ability to screw into your stand (some fittings come with the TV). It can be tempting not to do this as the instructions leave it in as an optional after-thought and you'll probably just want to get watching things.

The screen is amazing and I love having the HD tuner built-in. The sound is fine for a TV, but doesn't do the same job as separate amp and speakers. The smart features (e.g. iPlayer, YouTube) are great for me, but I was disappointed that the web browser doesn't allow video playback (I think Flash playback specifically)... as I would have liked to watch TED.com on there.

I've also just discovered the iPhone app... it works brilliantly and actually makes it faster to navigate around the menus, which I have found to be quite slow in the past.

Not sure if my words have been more negative that positive, but rest assured this is a fantastic TV - you won't regret buying it.

P.S. I haven't tied my TV to the stand yet - a weekend job I mustn't forget :)
