    Super Telly! 15 Nov 2010
Just got one of these last week as a replacement for a sony 46v4000 which had suffered an unfortunate mishap. It is so much lighter that the old one and consumes about half the power 120W max as opposed to 238W. The profile of the bezel makes it look smaller but it isn't. However it does sit lower down on the video cabinet. When I first turned it on setup was easy apart from the external freeview box was unplugged so the TV found no digital channels. Easy to fix I thought. You have a choice of shop or home mode I chose home. (Note Shop mode is vivid mode). When the picture first came on I was less than impressed it was dull and lifeless so I went into Options to change the picture mode. When I got there are only 3: standard (dull), custom (flat/dull) and vivid (very bright backlight max but sterile, colour temp cool). It was at this point I hated the set and the picture quality. The paper manual is sparse and the i-Manual full of text that seems to give no real information while stating the obvious. Example try finding auto tuning for the digital freeview.

Giving up on the manuals it was lets just play. To cut the story short the settings I found to give me a nice bright sharp colourful picture were starting at the defaults: Options-Picture

HDMI input and a cable HD box
(Note you have to scroll down for some of these)
    Picture Mode: Custom
    Backlight: 8
    Colour: 60
    Colour Temp: Neutral
    Sharpness: max
    Film Mode: auto 1
    Advanced settings:-
    Black Corrector: High
    Live Colour: High

(Note if you are unsure of where you started you can Reset to get back to the defaults)

Once I had these setting the picture is great, sharp and smooth. The freeview digital picture is inferior to HDMI HD and the Analogue, well watch if you only have to.

I have a wired internet and plugged it in. I watched a youtube video but this is no web browser.
There is only 1 USB so if you get a wireless Sony Adapter that's it.
Loads of inputs, put the Wii on component video.
Sound is OK but rather than get cinema sound an effective alternative is just to plug in a sub woofer into the stereo out phonos on the back. I have a sub from an old 5:1 system and it just adds that umph to the bass so I won't be adding anything else. Just one note Sony in their wisdom do not mute the stereo out so if you mute with a sub woofer attached you get a muffled rumble in the background, also the volume on the TV does not seem to affect the level on the stereo out.

By the way if you need to retune the digital channels you will find out how to do it on the back page of the paper manual. The Settings page is obtained after the blue Home button is pressed and then scrolling left many clicks. I had expected this to be in the options but obviously SONY are learning software user design from Microsoft.

By now after so many key presses you will be getting irritated by the key beep on every remote press. Luckily buried in the Settings pages is a setting to turn it off.

There is so much you can control for the picture settings I am sure you will find something to suit. You will also find how awful you can make it as well.

Once setup I really like this TV and would recommend it. I gave it 5 stars because of this. If I was judging it on the manuals and picture out of the box I could have been tempted to send it back as that was not what I expected of a SONY TV. Hope my ramblings give you something to work with, it is a great TV.

    Big disappointment 21 Dec 2010
    By Jon
Good next day delivery from Amazon. However I felt this item had been returned before as the stand had been assembled, the screen repacked and the box resealed.

It wasn't too much of a surprise then when I discovered very bad light bleeding from the sides of the screen several inches from the edge into the picture. My wife spotted it straight away too. Especially noticeable on the blue screen when you tune to a radio station on Sky. An easy test is to switch to the SCART input with no source connected, then open the Home screen.

I checked 2 more ex713 46 inch sets in local stores and found the same problem, the 40 inch was maybe slightly better. I thought the 55 inch was stunning but pricey.

For what it's worth the sound was better than I expected, motion handling and UI were excellent, and it's a very good looking set. Also the internet features were well executed.

But the backlight bleeding meant it had to go back. Who knows, maybe there are some good ones out there. Returned as faulty and got the usual good returns service from Amazon.

I have had this TV for a few months now and would have to say I am very pleased with it.

Out of the box set-up is easy, taking only a couple of minutes in my case, but I did go back and fiddle with the picture settings to get it how I wanted.

Blu-Rays look amazing showing levels of detail I have just not seen on other sets, it's worth re-watching films just to see what I'd missed first time round. Colours are rich, blacks deep and pictures sharp. PS3 games look great too with not smearing during high action scenes. Hi-def TV looks good too (via a Virgin Media+ box) if not quite as pristine as Blu-Rays and even standard definition transmissions look acceptable blown up to 46 inches.

I can't comment properly on sound quality as I use an AV amp and separate speakers for all audio, although I did use the inbuilt speakers briefly just after setting it up to make sure everything worked and it sounded ok, if unremarkable.

Backlight issues seemed to have plagued some peoples experiences, but for me at least it's something of a non-issue. In use the only time I have noticed it is when I shut down the PS3, which has a black screen with small white text in the centre and some light bleed is evident on the left and right edges. But as this isn't a screen I look at for more than a second or two it doesn't really bother me (but it is there). While watching TV, Blu-Rays or playing games it's not apparent even if I make a conscious effort to look for it. Viewing Blu-Rays of The Watchmen and Batman: The Dark Knight (both with plenty of dark or night scenes) no backlight bleed could be seen, and I am picky about such things. It should be noted there is a drop in contrast if you look at the screen from an angle, but it's still perfectly watchable even at extreme angles.

Overall I'm very impressed with this screen, and without fail all of my friends and family have been blown away by it. With mine at least the backlight issue is so insignificant as to be ignored, but judging by some of the other reviews your mileage may vary. Being brutally honest I'd give 4 and half stars, but I can't so it gets five.
