Full High Definition 1080p picture quality
Because it's ultimate Full HD 1080p, the ultimate HD format, the 2 million pixels give you an unprecedented degree of detail and clarity. The number 1080 relates the number of horizontal lines of pixels on the screen. The more lines that a screen contains, the better the picture quality. To compare, HD-Ready sets have 768 while standard definition (SD) sets have just 576 lines. The letter p refers to its progressive or non-interlaced picture-scanning process where all the lines of the image are refreshed by every vertical scan. 1080p is the maximum resolution defined for HDTV use and this format is used for Blu-ray Disc™ ® and PLAYSTATION®3. Full HD 1080 boosts the image resolution by up four times.

Enjoy subscription-free, built-in Freeview HD
To add to your viewing choice, the set has a built-in Freeview HD TV tuner so you have instant access to a huge range of free-to-air and digital TV and radio channels, including HD programmes. Channels are free so you won't have any subscription fees or contracts to sign. Because it's all built-in you won't need a set-top box or satellite dish either. Simply plug in your external TV aerial and access all your channels using just one remote control.

Unique Monolithic style
The TV's unique, minimalistic Monolithic design gives your room an added sense of style and space. Its elegant, 40" (102cm) flush screen surface not only enhances the viewing experience but looks stunning even when the picture is off. Switch it to Picture Frame mode and you can turn your BRAVIA into a work of art by displaying pre-installed images or your own photos and make great use of your wall space even when you're not watching TV. To allow you to enjoy the perfect fusion of image and sound, the speakers are hidden in the TV design and positioned for ideal sound elevation.

Optimised pictures for your surroundings
This BRAVIA model features an Ambient Sensor which automatically adjusts the backlight for the best picture setting depending on the colour temperature of the ambient light in the room. This is one of a group of energy-saving Eco-Settings which also includes an Energy Saving Switch which cuts energy consumption to zero when the TV is not in use, Idle TV Standby and PC Power Management.

Authentic cinematic experiences
Cinema Mode is a new picture setting developed in collaboration between BRAVIA and Sony Pictures Entertainment. It allows films to be viewed as close to the original director's cut as possible. Cinema Mode precisely reproduces details such as natural skin tone, lighting, colour and contrast. In 24p True Cinema mode films can be watched as the director intended for the big screen - at 24 frames per second. Standard TVs use 25 frames a second which means they play back 'faster' than they do in the cinema.

Clearer, more life-like colours
Reds and greens are notoriously difficult to reproduce on an LCD screen. Live Colour intelligently boosts these colours making sure the images you see on your BRAVIA TV are bright, vibrant and realistic. Connect a compatible camera or camcorder and the TV will automatically switch to optimum settings for displaying photos and reproduce their full, realistic texture and colour.

Good.....but 11 Jan 2011
The Sony has an excellent picture, but the standard settings seem very pallid colour wise compared to other sets. It can be altered of course, so that's OK, but I can't imagine who would live with the factory settings.

Sound? No comments to make, it's fine by me.

BUT:- This has GOT to be the SLOWEST channel changer on the market. Change the channel, and it goes and gets all the other selected channel programme information, before it changes to it, and then displays that information on-screen. The television is then frozen, until that programme information turns off. It will certainly cure channel hoppers! As much as 6 or 7 seconds to change channels? Ridiculous!

The manual is rubbish, and it's also built into the TV, so you can look at it on-screen.Both rubbish!
Set-up section for changing settings, is painfully obscure.

Once you get this TV set up, I think most people would avoid having to make any changes later. It's painful!

Addition: 31/8/11
How I wish I had bought a TV without the extra gubbins. You have to wait whilst the thing boots up like a PC, and you can't do anything with it for about 5 - 10 seconds after it has booted up. i.e. If it comes up on a channel you don't want to watch, it's ages before you can change to a channel you do want to watch.
Quite honestly, if I thought I could get away with it (Wife) I would replace the damn thing.
