Manufacturer's Description

Packed with the latest Sony technology, the BRAVIA Z5500 lets you experience HD entertainment in all its glory. Super-fast Motionflow 200Hz quadruples frame rates to give you the fastest, smoothest motion ever on screen. Image quality is guaranteed by BRAVIA ENGINE 3 digital processing which results in vivid colours and sharper edges, while Dynamic Contrast of up to 100,000:1 gives every image incredible depth and detail. The Z5500 is DLNA-enabled, allowing you to connect it to other compatible devices and enjoy music, video and photos on a whole new level. Plus you can use the AppliCast™ feature to check on-screen RSS feeds of news and other information while you’re watching your favourite programmes.

Motionflow 200Hz delivers the smoothest performance ever
Sport and action scenes have never looked this good, thanks to the Z5500’s combination of next generation HD picture enhancement technologies. Its screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 can accept Full HD1080p/24p input signals with no downscaling, which means more pixels for better resolution and finer details.

The quality of the picture is then heightened further by world first Motionflow 200Hz technology, which quadruples the standard refresh rate of 50Hz to deliver fast-moving scenes in razor-sharp detail. After every frame it inserts an additional three unique frames before the next one, intelligently predicting movement in all directions. Even before those new frames are created, Image Blur Reduction cleans moving objects in the original frame, like a football, to achieve the sharpest edges ever on TV. The result is action that’s as vivid and intense as real life.

BRAVIA ENGINE 3 for the ultimate HD experience
An LCD television creates pictures by switching millions of pixels on and off. In the Z5500 this process is controlled by the BRAVIA ENGINE 3, the latest version of Sony’s advanced digital processing technology. Using a collection of unique Sony algorithms it applies a digital perfecting process to reduce noise and produce cleaner images, higher contrast and smoother motion sequences, resulting in enhanced overall performance regardless of source.

Specifically, it analyses each individual scene, controlling the peak brightness level to generate advanced colour and brightness, and optimising the noise level. It also detects and adjusts the overall colour distribution of each frame and smoothes diagonal lines of pixels in fast-moving pictures to prevent jagged edges and bleeding colours. In short, it delivers exceptional performance in every single scene.

Connect your home with DLNA
The BRAVIA Z5500 means you can finally create an easy-to-use home network that lets you share music, video and pictures from around the house on your TV. As part of the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA), Sony has adopted a universal standard for connectivity that enables your electronic devices, regardless of brand, to ‘talk’ to one another.

So now it’s easy to move files between your TV, PC, printer, music player, phone, camera and more, wherever they are in the home. By integrating your TV into a home network, either wirelessly or via a cable, you can use your BRAVIA remote to find photos on the DLNA-enabled laptop in your bedroom and call them up to your living room TV screen. If you want hard copies, just send them to print on the colour printer in your spare room.

Dynamic Contrast – Gives the image incredible depth and detail

A new sense of depth with 100,000:1 Dynamic Contrast
To ensure consistently amazing picture quality, 100,000:1 Dynamic Contrast ensures all shades between the brightest white and the darkest blacks are maintained, giving the image so much depth and detail that you’ll be drawn into the screen. It works by enabling the backlight brightness to adjust according to the brightness of the scene. The Z5500’s unique dynamic contrast system features ACE (advanced contrast enhancer), which adjusts the backlight level to maintain every subtle shade of grey, a greater level of contrast and a sharper High Definition picture. You’ll really notice the difference in dark scenes, when it can reproduce true black without sacrificing brightness.

AppliCast™ keeps you in touch while you watch
AppliCast™ lets you see internet information on your BRAVIA TV while you’re watching television. You don’t have to switch on your PC – just call up widgets on to the TV screen. Three widgets, including a clock and calendar, are already installed on the on-screen XrossMediaBar and you can add RSS feeds of news, weather and more by connecting your TV to the internet via the Ethernet port at the back. Just select the information you want with your BRAVIA remote and it’s right there whenever you need it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great all round TV, 22 April 2009
By Peter Cavendish (London, UK) - See all my reviews
I bought this to replace my 3 year old non-HD Sony 23 inch LCD TV. The clarity of the picture is superb - colours balanced with no motion blurring that I have noticed. Watching the "Sarah Connor Chronicles" on Virgin 1 via Freeview, the picture is touching the cinematic with the light and hues well reproduced. Seeing "Revenge of the Sith" on DVD was like watching a new movie again. I could see the intricate patterns and textures on characters' clothing, and the opening battle is given full justice. All this without even trying HD sources (which I do not yet own). This is a huge improvement on my old Sony which suffered from blurring when showing fast moving objects.

The set is future proof (for now) with all the connections you need, including a PC input and new networking standard for devices, called DLNA . Though there is a USB socket for showing your photos and video on the TV, only Sony cameras and camcorders are compatible, so I can't hook up my iPod or a USB memory device (except Sony Microvault).

Other features include a low energy mode, extensive ways to adjust the picture and sound, a swivel stand, a Top-Up TV slot and a photo frame function. The on-screen menu is the best I have seen and easy to use.

Personally, the styling is disappointing by Sony standards and it looks very different in real life from the photos. Overall the design is low key rather than striking. The remote control, considering this is a mid-range model, is light and flimsy. As the case with flat screen TVs, the sound is generally only acceptable.

Overall, this is an excellent Sony TV with the latest Sony Bravia 3 engine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great TV, 14 April 2009
By Matthew Miller (London, England) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
This tv is a truly magnificent piece of equipment.

The picture is crisp even on lower resolution inputs such as the integrated freeview.

When playing through a HD input with a 5.1 surround sound system it gets even better. A whole new experience.

The new range of bravia are a lot more sleek than previous versions, looking great with the shiny but contemporary finished effect. The only downside that it attracts the dust, but reminds you to keep your product well maintained.

The Screen quality is great with none of this shiny screen nonsense to make it look quality i.e Samsung, the colour is just sublime.

Top end product that will not dissapoint, but at a top end price.
The price is the only downfall to me on this product.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 16 Mar 2009
By RB "RB" (London) - See all my reviews
Got this TV first class delivered, brilliant service by amazon. Thought I would wait a little longer and spend the extra money on this TV, due to the Bravia Engine 3 technology, and i can say it was definately worth it. I have a ps3 connect via HDMI and they both work great together, TV has same GUI as ps3 and picture quality is sublime! I was going to buy a samsung but im glad i bought this, It has a great finish and slim compared to other full hd tv's..totally recommended!
