I was after a second TV for the bedroom, and decided a 26" screen would be perfect. I initially purchased the Sony 26S4000 from Richer Sounds, for £370. I was after the V4000 but RS were out of stock, so they sold me this instead, claiming it was essentially the same set.

I excitedly got it home and unboxed it. First impressions were dismal - the TV is deeper than most LCDs I've seen, with a vile plasticky body and a rounded design that really isn't to my taste. It's very light, which might be a bonus to some, but to me it felt cheap. Apparently Sony sets are made by Samsung nowadays, which might explain why they look and feel so much cheaper than other Sony merchandise.

However, the true test of a TV is in the performance. So I tuned in the digital receiver using the aerial normally inserted in to the back of my Panasonic plasma. Oh dear. I was appalled. The picture was blocky and muddled. There was an incredible amount of ghosting (where fast movement leaves a perceptible trail on the screen) and the colours were completely non-lifelike, especially skin tone. The blacks looked like shallow muddy puddles and gave the picture no sense of depth. This from a set with a purported contrast ratio of 30,000:1!! As for the sound quality - it's like listening to war-time radio broadcasts, underwater.

I spent 40 mins fiddling with the display and audio settings using the unintuitive menu system when I finally conceded that this wasn't the set for me. Luckily Richer Sounds have a generous returns policy (as long as you seal it up tight!) so back it went. Instead, I went for a Panasonic 26LXD8, which has a vastly superior picture and is a much better set all round.
