Capable of making fairly good quality recordings with its stereo internal microphones: amply adequate for voice recording; for music it makes a pleasant recording, but not of studio quality. In this version it comes with a stand, USB cable which is used to transfer sounds to a computer and for charging the two AAA cells supplied, and Dragon Naturally Speaking software; it is also available in other versions.

The controls are fairly easy to use, with separate buttons for the main functions. Recording is started quickly by the press of one button. The menu is reasonably easy to use for functions such as setting the quality of recording and choosing manual or automatic gain control for recording. The LCD screen reads in portrait for recording, but in landscape orientation for menus and for playback, which is a little odd, meaning that if mounted in the stand the text is vertical, not horizontal.

The recorder is good in many ways, but let down by some silly things: it is not possible to record while connected to the computer and running off the computer's USB power (and nor can it be used as a microphone for the computer); it is not supplied with a battery charger, so can only be charged by connecting to a USB port; the plastic it is made of is finely textured, leading to quite loud sounds being recorded if it moves at all in your hands while recording; the instructions are poorly translated and not very clear.

Compared with Denpa recorders it is much better built and much easier to use. Compared with the Olympus WS family of recorders it is a bit easier to use and a bit better built.

The Sony software is basic but works. Dragon Naturally Speaking is better than previous voice recognition software I tried a few years ago, but I have still chosen to type this rather than dictate it. I did try dictating it, but found there were far too many errors in the transcript.
