Shoot and share instantly

Just imagine it. You’ve had a great day on the piste doing jumps, tackling mogul fields and wiping out. You get back to your hotel room and while the kettle is boiling, you watch the day’s filming on your hotel wall. Sound like something from the future? Maybe but actually it’s something you can do right now as this camcorder includes a built in projector. Just flip out the screen and you’ll find the projector on the back, ready to go. Talk about convenient.

Project anywhere, anytime

No need to hunt out cables or have wires trailing across the floor. All you do is aim the camcorder at a wall and enjoy the show. It’s that easy and great fun when you’re away with family or friends. The projector is designed into the flip-out LCD and can project images up to 100” in low light conditions. So you can sit there with your cuppa, laughing at yourself getting it all wrong on your first attempt off piste. And because the LCD rotates freely, you can watch your fall from grace from any old angle.

Take Full HD 1920x1080 video with a high sensitivity Exmor R CMOS sensor – increased detail and clarity even in low light.

So sharp, so clear

In fact, with high definition it’s like being there all over again. Four times the detail of standard definition. Everything so much sharper and clearer with vivid, lifelike colours and rich tones.* Look at the sun reflecting off the piste and the detail as the snow flicks out from beneath the board. Look at the colours in Siva’s outrageously lairy skisuit. You really need to invest in some new gear, Siva.

Easily handles low light

How many times have you filmed the sun going down, only to get back home and be royally disappointed with the dark, grainy results? Low light kills detail on many camcorders. Not on this one, though, as it includes an Exmor R CMOS sensor, one of the most sophisticated low light sensors available. So when you’re capturing the sun as it dips below Mont Blanc, you can be sure darkness won't hide the detail.

Sound that’s all around

It’s fine shooting in HD but how about sound? Can you hear the shoosh of skis on snow, the chirping of birds in the trees? With a highly sensitive microphone, the same S-Master amplifier and Clear Phase audio technology found in Sony Hi-Fi systems and MP3 players, not to mention Dolby Digital 5.1 channel surround sound, this camcorder perfectly reproduces the most powerful sounds and subtlest of noises. Hear everything loud and clear. Your movies come to life and take you straight back to the moment you first shot the scene.

Even takes impressive photos

There’s only so much space in your bag or rucksack, isn’t there? Maybe not enough for a camcorder and a camera? Stay relaxed. This Handycam® solves your dilemma by taking really good-looking still shots too, with sharp detail and natural colour at the touch of a button. No more fuzzy faces, diluted detail or blurred backgrounds. No more hammering away at the delete key because picture quality doesn’t measure up. You can zoom in up to 30 times and capture close-ups and distant shots without losing clarity. Just what you need to check out the last rays of the sun on a distant peak.

5.1 channel surround sound and S-Master amplifier provides a great soundtrack.

Keeps things steady

Don’t worry about camera shake. Optical SteadyShot keeps everything steady so you can shoot clearly while walking around town or when closing in on a distant subject. And because Optical SteadyShot is always active, composing your shot on the LCD screen while moving into the best possible position is a doddle.

Great shots made easy

Selecting the perfect settings for a particular scene can be daunting. No need to worry with this camcorder as Intelligent Auto (iAUTO) does all that for you. How? By automatically recognising up to 60 scenes and adjusting settings for the best possible picture. So if you’re shooting mountains, colours and focus will be optimised for landscapes. Best of all, iAuto is quick and easy to activate - just flip open the screen, touch the start icon and shoot.

No point in squinting

We’ve all done it or laughed at someone else doing it. Squinting through a tiny screen to frame a shot or review footage. This camcorder refuses to put you in that ridiculous situation by including a large touch screen with a wide viewing angle. Compose your scenes with ease - menus and settings are just a tap away. With outstanding detail, high contrast and less reflection, gathering round the bar with your friends to share your great shots of the beach or piste is so much more fun.

Let’s face it, we like smiles

They’re natural, spontaneous, here one moment, gone the next. You just don’t have time to set up for a quick smile shot so this camcorder does it all for you. Smile Shutter automatically takes pictures when people smile – great for brides and grooms, birthday celebrations and baby chuckles. Face Detection automatically adjusts exposure, focus and skin tone so everyone looks more natural. After all, the better you look, the more you’ll like your footage!

Connect and share

What’s the point keeping all those great memories in your camcorder? Use the built-in USB cable and PlayMemories software to easily transfer video and photos to your PC, upload to the web or share on social networking sites. Ingeniously hidden in the handstrap, the cable is great for travelling as it takes up no space at all and allows you to leave your normal USB cable and AC Adaptor at home.

Your own short movies at the touch of a button

If only there was a quick and easy way to turn your latest holiday video into a professional looking movie, without having to spend ages slaving over a PC. You know, with transition effects and background music and a nice opening sequence. Highlight Playback does it all for you in a jiffy. Access directly with one touch from the Event Browse playback interface and easily create your movie using selected pictures and videos. Save as a new movie and burn to DVD or upload to social networking sites via PlayMemories Home so all your friends and family can enjoy your latest adventure.

No need to hunt down memory cards

They’re really convenient and a great way to get your memories onto your laptop. But sometimes you don’t want to worry about memory cards, you just want to pick up and shoot. This camcorder lets you do that as it has a nice big 16GB memory built in. Of course, you can use a memory card as well if you like, any time you want.

* By shooting at 50 Full HD frames a second, every scene looks sharp and clear with vivid, lifelike colours and rich tones.

This has the same lens and sensor as the CX250E. The PJ260VE offers the following over the CX250E:

* 16GB built-in memory
* Projector, stereo speakers and `remote commander'
* Dolby 5.1 audio recording
* GPS geo-tagging
* Headphone jack

Taking those in order:

16GB SD cards are inexpensive these days but it's easy to remove the card from the camera to use in your PC and then forget to put it back in the camera, which you only discover when away from home! The built-in memory is thus welcome and adds a level of convenience. You can supplement it with a card.

The projector adds bulk and weight as well as cost, and projected images don't compare with those shown on a decent TV, being much darker and fuzzier, so it's strictly for use when no TV (or perhaps no cable) is available. At times, the projector is really convenient, though, especially for your own use in previewing a movie. Incidentally, the specs on the Sony website say there's no `remote commander' with this model but they're wrong.

Dolby 5.1 surround sound recording works surprisingly well and may be of real value to you. I was surprised, when playing footage back, at just how much was going on around me! On the other hand, if you just want to make movies of the kids growing up, you may feel you don't need it.

GPS tagging works well enough outdoors but the camera struggles to get a fix indoors. Of course, that could be down to where I live, but GPS on my iPhone seems work indoors most of the time. If you do a significant part of your movie-making outdoors, GPS is probably worth having, but, if most your work is indoors it may not be very effective.

Unlike the CX250E, this has a headphone jack. The Sony website specs are wrong in saying it doesn't.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong performer 2 Jun 2012
By Andrew TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is a fantastic camcorder with strong performance.It comes in a deceptively small package and the camcorder is quite light which surprised me. On first glance it looks absolutely fantastic. Very neat and compact it was quite intuitive to connect the battery and within a minute or two start shooting. What surprised me most was that the camcorder has 16gb of internal memory which allowed me to commence shooting immediately. Good for 1hr15 at highest quality or 5 hours of lowest quality footage I immediately set about playing with it. This is the smallest battery of 3 and I would have preferred to have seen the m id-way one included with this.

The camcorder itself has a nice compact body and a hand grip, with a built in mini usb cable (stops you losing it and an extender is supplied in the box). It features a 3inch touch screen which was nice and responsive to use. Video/photo playback looks great on it and it features two speakers for sound.

It is on the flip out screen that you find the built in projector. I was initially very sceptical of this feature assuming it was very gimmicky. How wrong I was. Whilst I wouldn't watch a feature film on it the projected image is nothing short of fantastic considering its size. No more gathering around the screen holding it in front for everyone to see. A neat little slider allows you to adjust focus and you are aware. It frees you from cables etc. Now don't get me wrong on a bright sunny day, much like any projected image you will struggle but in the shade, curtained room etc. I really like the projector feature.

The supplied battery can run the camcorder for roughly 2 hours, be it recording or playback and larger ones are available.

4.0 out of 5 stars Generally Very Impressed 17 May 2012
By Ian Mitchell TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I have been using compact camcorders from the Hi8 days...

My last one which I have been using for a few years was the Panasonic HDC-SD9 which at the time was also described as Full-HD (Progressive 1080/25p).
It has performed well throughout its life other than the audio tends to pick up creaking noises from the hand strap.

Now for the nice new Sony which is also Full-HD 1920x1080 25/50P (Note, in 50P mode it cannot take a still photo while you are filming).

Out of the box experience is pretty good other than having to wait for the battery to charge.

I was also worried that the software CD was missing but this model has it loaded on the camera's internal 16Gb of memory.

I already had a 32Gb SD Card (Yes, it takes normal SD Cards as well as Sony ones) so rather than use the internal memory I opted for this.

From the touch-screen display you have to pick which to use, Internal memory or a card which it then prepares for use creating a database to track recording times and location (using the GPS function).

The touch-screen menu also of course lets you set all other major settings such as video recording mode and still recording mode.

Operation.
This is easy, just open the display and it powers up in I would say under two seconds.
Controls are also easy with the zoom control on top and start/stop on the back operated by your thumb (these functions are also on the touch-screen and remote control).
At first I thought the 55x Optical Zoom must be a joke but with the inbuilt image stabilisation you can get very good paparazzi style results and I would guess even better with a tripod.
