I bought this flash to go with my alpha 230, with the intention of using it for portraits and sports shots.
This flash was expensive, but it has really some outstanding features and is easy to use straight out of the box. The only annoying thing about it is its relatively short battery life - I use rechargables and have a dedicated set just for the flash.
Perhaps the best and most useful feature that makes this flash stand out is its swivelling head (a bit like a ball-head tripod) which allows you to adjust the position of the flash with great precision. This is really brilliant and I use it all the time.
The flash works attached to the camera by the hot shoe and also wirelessly. I found wireless operation really simple to figure out. Also, hats off to Sony for making a flash which works wirelessly even with the entry-level cameras. My friend's Canon Speedlite only has this capability with the more expensive models.
The flash has numerous modes, including allowing fill-flash at high shutter speeds. I've not played with them all yet, but I'm getting the hang of reliably using the flash to light subjects the way I want to, even in poor/incandescent lighting conditions. The flash is also easily powerful enough to trigger studio lighting. Physically it's quite large, but it doesn't feel overly heavy when on the camera, even with a large lens.
It comes with a stand for wireless use, a useful fold-away card for calibrating white balance and a sturdy-looking case.
