On board is a huge 160GB built-in memory for storing up to 66 hours of high definition video footage (in HD LP mode). You can get even more simply by inserting an optional SD card or Memory Stick into the camcorder.

With High Definition, you get super smooth, intensely detailed HD movies with pin-sharp definition, deep contrast and natural colours. HD recording using AVCHD (Audio Video Compression for HD) technology captures five times the detail of standard definition in Full HD 1920 x 1080 at a maximum bit rate of 28MBps. What’s more, with 1920x1080/50p recording, this camcorder films at an exceptional 50 Full HD frames per second in progressive mode for the clearest possible footage.
Amazing detail, day or night
This high quality Handycam uses a high sensitivity Exmor R™ CMOS Sensor designed to capture detail-packed images even in low light. Shoot at dawn, dusk or in dimly lit rooms and you’ll see none of the graininess or fuzziness of some inferior camcorders. The 29.8mm wide angle G lens covers around twice the area of a standard camcorder lens with 30x optical zoom and 42x extended zoom to catch impressive close-ups and far away panoramas.

You’ll never need worry about hand shake while shooting with the XR160. Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode keeps all your recordings stable, even while walking or zooming in. Capture smooth handheld video from wide angle to full telephoto, shooting with best-ever ‘3-way’ camera shake correction - up to 10 times improved stabilisation on wide angle settings.
Intelligent thinking
The easy to use XR160 takes the effort out of home movie making with iAuto. This intelligent scene recognition feature recognises your surroundings and automatically adjusts light and focus settings to give you the best possible results wherever and whenever you are. The unique iAUTO selects from 90 possible settings then uses clever Sony-exclusive technologies to optimise shots for faces, smiles, low-light levels, different scenes or anti-shake adjustment.
Simply touch
Operating the camcorder is a breeze. The XR160 includes a large 3.0-inch (7.5cm) WIDE Clear Photo LCD so you can easily compose scenes and enjoy finely detailed playback. Simply touch the screen to access menus and settings with your fingertips and view footage with friends seconds after you’ve finished filming.

Home movies are made for sharing. With its built-in USB cable, XR160 connects in a moment to your PC for transferring video and stills. What’s more, the PMB Portable software inside Handycam® launches automatically for quick and easy web uploading – ideal of you want to share movies via your favourite social networking site. The USB arm makes charging simple too.

Smile Shutter automatically takes pictures when people smile while Face Detection adjusts camera settings so that natural skin tones are preserved and up to eight faces stay in focus.
Make Your Own Short Movie at a Touch of a Button
Unique to Handycam®, Highlight Playback provides a fast and easy way for you to enjoy professional looking short movies including transition effects and background music without spending long hours editing on a PC. With the new Event Browse playback interface, you can directly access Highlight Playback at the touch of a button. Still photos can now be included, allowing you to create short movies that intelligently blends selected pictures and videos so you can enjoy them together. If you missed a favourite scene from your movie, simply add it manually. When you’re happy with your production, save it as a new video (in Standard Definition) to be burned to a DVD or uploaded to social networking sites via PMB or the pre-installed PMB portable. Highlight Playback simply makes viewing and sharing so much easier - now, there’s no reason not to share more with your family and friends.
