I bought the Sony HDR-SR1 and used it to film a road trip to the US last month (Apr07). On my return I played about 3 hours of un-edited footage back on my Samsung HDTV and the picture quality and sound are fantastic.

Looking forward to editing this film and re-arranging, adding sound, integrating special effects and generally trimming down the footage on an Apple Mac, I have discovered that AVCHD is not editable (well, not properly anyway!). I now feel that this was all a waste of money and have bought the wrong camera. I am following these reviews and would be interested in hearing from anyone who definately knows when either Apple are building the appropriate software for AVCHD or when sony are going to deliver a product for the PC which can handle editing this cameras HD footage properly. Partly my fault for not reading what it can and cant do before purchase and partly Sonys fault for releasing a camera which is not good for much else than simply playing back on your TV.

Great camera 14 Nov 2006
Wow, this camera is fantastic. This is one of the gadgets I consider as a must have (along with the Philips digital photo frame).

This camera has a great feel to it and the build quality seems fine.

The quality of the HD video is what really makes this camera stand out, the images are clear, sharp and vibrant, and when displayed on an HD ready TV it's as though you're looking out of a window. The 5.1 surround sound is also very impressive.

The software included with the camera is very easy to use and allows you to convert HD to SD which can then be viewed on a standard DVD player. HD recordings can also be created on DVDs which should be compatible with blu-ray devices.

Unfortunately there are a few negative points which I have listed below.

1) The menu structure is poor and rather unintuitive.

2) 90% of the functions are only available via the touch screen. This means that whether you like it or not you're going to end up with finger prints all over the lcd.

3) When using the 'smooth slow motion' feature the picture quality drops dramatically. Its also a bit frustrating that this feature is not available while recording, so you end up with a discreet 12sec video clip. As there is currently no AVCHD editing software available you can't even splice this video clip into existing footage.

4) The HD play back on my computer is very jumpy. There is a note that comes with the camera that warns you about this however I didn't expect to have this problem with a 3.5GHz CPU. That said if the video is written back to the camera or to a DVD the play back will be fine.

Overall I think this camera is a great piece of equipment and worth every penny.

Very nice camera 19 Dec 2006
This camera is really nice. The video quality is brilliant.

Currently, you cannot edit the AVCHD hi-def video clips on any major video editing software.

However, you can set the camera to Standard definition mode and you get an mpeg file which you can edit.

The video quality is good in standard definition too. Hopefully the major apps will soon support AVCHD.

Some nice things... you can take up to two photos whilst filming at the same time! With flash!

The photos that this takes are also very reasonable. You could use this to take fairly decent still photos. The touch screen is also very intuitive and easy to use.

With no running costs whatsoever, this camera is very nice.
