This isn't usually the sort of game I would consider playing. (I'm more of a sims and role play kind of gal myself). So when my boyfriend showed me that he had got it on rental, I was preparing myself for a weekend of boredom and "Oh, how nice dear"s. I was refreshingly surprised.
The storyline follows the story of Kratos, a warrior for the Gods, in his battle against Ares. Ares has turned against the people of Athens and is now wrecking havoc. This game rips into Greek mythology and turns it on its head. You'll get to fight against things such as sirens and minotaurs as well as a few more modern monsters like skeletons. However, the end of the story is one you could see a mile off. There are no clever twists or turns there.
The non-linear style game play is this games greatest strength...as well as its greatest flaw. There are so many paths you can choose from and there's hardly ever any clear indication as to which one to pick. Although this does provide a challenge, it can be a little frustrating to have to retrace your steps. Fortunately, you can't really ever stray too far from the "correct" path.
Of course, for an 18, this game has a great amount of bloodshed and gore! There are tactical combos you can perform, none of which are so complex that you'll forget them just second after you look at them. To make your attacks more brutal but you can also just randomly hit buttons. Also, the game contains plenty of puzzle solving moments. These are at a great difficulty level- not too easy as to just let you solve them seconds but not to hard as to drive you insane with frustration.
The graphics of this game are definitely a selling point. (Look out for the great water effects in Athens's town square!).
I would definitely recommend this game, particularly to those who wouldn't pick up a game of this genre normally. It's highly entertaining and the perfect length as to entertain for a sort period of time and not to drag on forever and ever!
