Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Genji is a beautifully cinematic, sword-wielding Samurai adventure based on the popular Japanese legend of the same name. Acting as the historic hero Genkuro Yoshitsune or his trusted companion Benkei, the warrior monk, you set out on a mission to release the oppressed from the evil forces of the warlord Kiyomori and restore the Genji dynasty to power.

Taking its visual cue from movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and House of Flying Daggers, Genji has a beautifully crafted aesthetic. Battle commences in lush Autumnal forests, grand, eastern palaces and blood soaked feudal battlegrounds, with an incredible attention to detail that really brings the legend to life.

As you would expect from the grand-daddy of Street Fighter, Genji plays as good as it looks. Execute slick and deadly manoeuvres, motion captured from a Samurai Swordmaster. Rain down combos, super-moves, parries and more onto your opponents; special features such as the 'Mind's Eye' slow time around you, allowing you to anticipate the enemies' movements with lightning precision and unleash balletic finishing moves.

A unique artificial intelligence, developed in conjunction with top Japanese fight director, Mitsuhiko Seike, constantly controls the action transforming each battle sequence into carefully choreographed kung-fu combat

4.0 out of 5 stars Innovative & Original Sony Production 7 May 2006
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Set in the golden age of feudal Japan, and actually retaining the original Japanese dialects used in the games creation (instead of cheesy American voice-overs for instance) this game, whilst short lived, marks high on the gameplay stakes; especially in mass battle scenes which are beautifully choreographed if you can combine the right combos.

The real time rendering of the game, the attention to graphical detail in the background, is quite breathtaking for a PS2 game.

The best feature of course is the Matrix-esque time manipulation feature. Where you can slow down time to anticipate an enemies movement and perform combos.

Finally, if you're into surround sound, the Dolby 5.1 / Pro Logic sound options will more than satisfy your needs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good while it lasts 19 Jan 2010

Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I can understand why a lot of people would love this game. The visuals are impressive, the story is OK and there is plenty of action. I did enjoy ' Genji ' for the most part but I can't deny that I also found it frustrating at times. So this is my take what's good and bad about the game.

The Good;
1) As stated, the game does look very good and the look of ancient Japan is captured very nicely.
2) When the action hots up the screen is awash with effective battles and it really keeps you on your toes.
3) The voice acting is impressive with Japanese accents used and they do sound genuine for the most part.
4) The story is reasonably compelling and keeps you going to the conclusion.

The Bad;
1) It is short. I completed it in about nine hours and even then I spent quite a bit of time looking around for stuff.
2) It wouldn't be suitable for anyone with slow reflexes as there is a reliance especially later in the game on pressing the square button at exactly the right time. If you don't master this then you are really going to struggle.
3) It can become a button bashing exercise sometimes when the action becomes frantic.

This is a pretty good game but I can only award three stars mainly due to how short the whole thing lasts. There is some replay value but once will be enough for me.

Genji is the best ‘RPG’ flashy cut-'em-up action adventure game out this year. Genji is a historic samurai adventure set in feudal Japan which makes the game even better. The gameplay is similar to Devil may cry and special to Onimusha. If you are a fan of DMC and Onimusha you defiantly will like Genji. The graphics, art design and sound in Genji are excellent. The characters and environments have a specifically Japanese feel to them, with elaborately dressed characters, ornate environments, and mystical otherworlds. The world is filled with great-looking scenery, including shimmering koi ponds, crumbling ruins, misty waterfalls, and forest paths lined with all kinds of vividly colored vegetation, when I play the game at least for an hour I just observe the scenery because it’s brilliant. The characters are fairly detailed, as well. In all the game is worthy to buy and to be kept forever.
