I very nearly bought a GoPro, but while reviewing YouTube vids I came across a comparison between one of these and a GoPro Hero 3+ Black edition (Look out for Techmoan). The video quality of this camera is excellent. YouTube doesn't do it any justice what-so-ever. I'm very very impressed with this camera and more impressed by the fact it's £100 cheaper than its equivalent... the Hero 3+ black edition. Admittedly I haven't been able to make a direct comparison of image quality, but it's hard to see (I doubt it would be even possible to see) how the GoPro could be any better.

The battery lasts for around around 3 to 4 hours depending on different factors... image quality, GPS on or off, WiFi on or off etc. It's possible to buy a spare battery and change it on the move. Charging via USB from the computer takes around 4 hours. It takes half that time with the optional charger. I would also highly recommend buying a decent memory card for it. Like the GoPro it doesn't come supplied with a card, so make sure you purchase one at the same time. I bought a 64GB ScanDisk micro SDXC and it works great with this camera. You need a fast card to cope with the high image quality. When recording in 1080/60 HD the images are simply beautiful. The camera also has SteadyShot (doesn't work in all modes) which eliminates practically all camera shake. I discovered it's even possible to mount the camera upside down and by turning the 'flip' software to 'on'. The images are recorded as though the camera was in its correct orientation.

I cannot praise this camera enough. I wish I could compare it to its GoPro equivalent. I do believe the GoPro excells under water compared to this camera, but I'm not at all worried about that. I have no intention of filming underwater. However, considering you can buy this camera and a very decent memory card for nearly £50 less than the GoPro, there's no contest.

I tend to do a couple of days skiing a year and every time I see more and more people wearing cameras to film themselves coming down the slopes. So this year I thought I'd see what all the fuss was about and decided I to pick up a camera to film myself carving the fresh snow of the Italian Alps.

When considering what camera to buy I only had to things in mind: ease of use and picture quality! So after lots of research - mostly on youtube - I was able to compare various cameras in terms of accessories and filming quality and I decided to go with Sony's AS30.

I believe the AS30 was an excellent choice and even its closest competitor (who we all know) can't beat it in terms of picture quality. I filmed all my skiing endeavours in 1080p @ 30fps with Sony's excellent Optical Steadyshot enabled and the results were astounding!! On a sunny day with lots of fresh snow I was worried that when skiing against the sun I would be unable to get a clear image - but fortunately I was wrong. Not only can you see the beautiful detail of the white powder and the blueness of the sky but everything appears as clear as when I was there.

I used the headstrap which gripped nicely around my helmet and made sure it was safely mounted on all the time. The camera itself was also very easy to use on the slopes as all you have to do is press a big button at the back and you quickly get used to the 2 sounds it gives you for "i'm now recording" and "i'm stopping". The camera will then power off after 10-30 secs and go into standby untill you press record again. It was all very very straight forward.

A couple of things I would be consider though is battery life and SD card space!

By K. L. Wren HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I borrowed Go-Pro action camera some time ago, loved the concept but felt it had a few shortfalls, particularly its video quality, so was delighted to be offered the opportunity to test and review this Sony HDR-AS30V.

I've always felt that Sony cameras have the edge over other brands where video quality is concerned and this AS30 is no exception. The video picture quality is superb and the 'Steady Shot' image stabilisation is, once again, one of Sony's best features.

It couldn't be easier to use: simply charge the battery, insert a memory card (I use Sony 32GB Micro SD SDHC Class 10 UHS-1 High Speed memory card and head off on adventures knowing that the camera will accurately take care of all focusing and exposure settings to record your ride, skydive, climb, kayaking through the waves or whatever activity you choose in any weather conditions.

The camcorder can be used with or without its waterproof housing but as the tripod screw fitting in on the case and it's intended to be mounted onto a helmet or head/chest strap, I'm guessing most users will use it with the housing which is how I tested it. All functions are accessible via just 3 push-buttons and these can be operated while wearing gloves

Three self-adhesive mounts are included with the camcorder which can be attached eg to a helmet but the headband/chestband straps are not supplied and nor is the suction cup mount used for filming via a car windscreen.
