xperia ray - just the right size just the right weight, i had an xperia mini before this and found it too small and other mobiles iv found to be just too big. to me this is just right.
The 8mp camera with face detection takes great pictures and video clips. The camera has a good zoom but there is no zoom in video mode. The camera does not have a flash the led on the back is used as a light in both picture taking and video shooting. The camera works really well in low light conditions and only in really dark situations will you need to put the light on to take a picture or video. (makes for a handy torch)
Battery life is good, id say over average but not amazing and charging back up is fairly quick.
The only thing missing for me is sms inbox, all sms messages are in conversation view (threaded) i miss not having the good old inbox view although im getting used to the chatroom style messaging.
im no expert on touch screens, the xperia rays works a treat responsive without been too sensitive. A Good all round mobile i dont think anyone would be disappointed with.

UPDATE, A recent software update has now enabled 16x zooming while videoing, also sweep panorama mode for extra wide picture taking. It just gets better and better :-)

I am really pleased with this phone. I've had the HTC Hero, and Wildfire, and this is just great, I loved the HTC hero because you could have the old style phone key pad to write texts with predictive text, and this sony allows that too, or turn it side ways and you can have the qwerty keyboard.

Everything is simple on this phone, its easy to add shortcuts, and simple to navigate. The screen colours are very slick, HD camera is amazing. This phone takes amazing pictures, and the zoom is silly on this, goes on forever.

I have the Gold back version, its not bling, just quite subtle, the phone is not massive, its no Iphone in terms of the width, it's just slightly bigger than a normal phone, but with the screen so clear and being able to zoom in on web pages there is no need to hold a huge phone, or carry some of these silly sized smart phones.

I was surprised at the number of great reviews this phone is receiving but it lives up to the hype. It's a lovely, functional, compact phone that does what it needs to and more. I knew there was a reason why I have stuck to Sony Ericssons for the last 4 years.

My phone company is nice and every 2 years I get a new smartphone for roughly 20 to 50 quid. This was 25, i had a look at it before i picked it up instore, i thought that it wouldn't be much better than my older nokia n97mini, just bit better camera, speed etc. But i was wrong. This phone, is AMAZING. i love the new type of styling, literaly a bar, no curves, funny notches, just a clean slab of sony engineering. The phone boot in a very quick time, there was standard android setup screens, but this phone is amazingly fast, and automatically downloaded software when plugged into the computer. I expanded to a 32GB external cart for more tunes and movies. The screen is absolutley brilliant. I prefer the colours in this thing more than in the iphone, it just has more depth, although the screen is slightley smaller, its big enough for me. It can play HD movies, unlike normal phone (samsung, nokia etc) this sony seems to support every HD type (when transfered to the phone from sony's 'media go' software, it seems to support 1080p and 720p videos.

The camera - 8.1 megapixles, produces beautiful results, and i found that i could take non-blurred shots in the night thanks to sony's exmor r sensors, and the 720p video with autofocus whilste recording is really decent.

Battery life is a little above average for smartphones, get 3 days out of fairly heavy use (watching bbciplayer, etc) web browser exptreamly fast with hsdpa (or something like that) i like the little arc above the home button that changes colour according to new sms, charging, charged, etc.

I so far have found no problems, apart from in an update, sony disabled the CRT sleep effect :( but it doesn't matter that much.

Verified Purchase
only had this phone a couple of weeks, and very happy with it so far. Previous phone was a galaxy ace, changed to this phone because the battery is terrible on the ace and also the internal memory is rubbish so u cant run multiple background apps( the ace was a great phone until i put too many apps on it) But this phone is running allsorts inc security, news and weather updates, not to mention all the widgets on the screens so you can launch music, photos, videos immediately.its not frozen on me yet where as the ace started freezing and had to keep taking the battery out to restart it.

The size of the phone is fantastic, hardly noticeable in your pocket. I tested the camera today in the park and have to say it is outstanding, very easy to use with all the features of a point and shoot camera, only downside is that it doesnt have a dedicated button to take photos, i personally dont like to touch the screen to take pics. the music player is good too but only has a mono speaker i dont know if this is standard on most phones today because the ace had stereo speakers but of course doesnt matter if you are using earphones.

comparison

ace had better speakers and phonecall quality and typing texting easier because qwerty is obviously bigger due to size of phone. so if you dont download apps or surf the web too much it is a good phone if you just talk and text a lot.

however the ray is a much quicker phone when surfing the internet also can play flash video so can watch bbc iplayer, compact and lighter so more comfortable in pocket. can download more apps, outstanding camera and display,

if you only talk and text on your phone then the ace is a good phone, with a good camera and music player. But if you like too download apps and surf the web and watch flash videos, have a more compact pocket friendly device with a better camera and display and a quicker phone then spend a bit more cash if you can you wont be diappointed.
