One device does it all these days. No need to carry a phone, camera, handheld GPS, organiser etc. Just buy one of these. I must admit that the GPS software plus OS maps of the UK comes extra (£95 from Viewranger) but a complete tech device dangles from my wrist on the provided strap wherever I go. Some reviews have questioned battery life, but it's so easy to switch off energy hungry stuff you don't need all the time. On GPS with data, WiFi and phone switched off I can get 8-10 hrs use in the hills. Not enough, buy a 5200mAh external battery for £20!- that's a pair of days. If you play games and surf the net and get fat, it's not the phone for you. Finally, you only need a thumb to access everything because of the corner shortcuts. Did I say finally? Who cares if its raining, just use it.

Like another reviewer, this was my first Android device. My husband has the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman and I had played about on there a bit, but not enough to really be familiar with how it works.

I am not, like so many other reviewers, an avid outdoor sports person. I am simply a nerdy housewife, and what drew me to this phone was the fact it was waterproof and I am constantly dropping phones into the bath/toilet/sink, and I must say, it hasn't been a disappointment.

This phone simply does not care if you take it for a bath with you, drop it on concrete, or if your one year old pickpockets you and you realise a few hours later that he thinks it's for teething on. It just toughs it out and gets on with things, and that's exactly what I needed in a phone.

It's gorgeous too, I mean, look at the colour scheme! I've never been a fan of orange, but this device pulls it off with such suave, I may consider painting the front of my house in a black-orange-silver-white ensemble to express my love for it. Maybe not that far, but hey, it's pretty.

My gadget-geeky husband nabbed the liveview watch pretty much as soon as I opened the box, and he uses it with his SE all the time. It has broke a little, but he managed to fix it, and it was only one of the bars that fixed it to the watch strap, so it's nothing that affects the technological functionality of it.

My one gripe is that there isn't much internal memory, so after a month or so of having it, you'll get messages telling you that space for apps is running low (and that's with all the apps I can moved to the SD card), but it's a small problem and I usually just realise I have a few minor apps that I don't use anymore on there.

Brilliant phone, don't think that just because you're not a master cyclist or rock climber that it's not for you. I'm a mom and I adore it!

Chose the Xperia Active for its waterprofness, compactness and compatibility with my favoured mapping system - Memory-Map - and it's worked out great so far. The maps display clearly, the GPS locks on very quickly and it's now my main tool for both local and mountain walks. It guided me through six days of Munro-bagging in early January without a hitch, and is both quicker to deploy and more accurate than the previous methods I've used. It coped well with rain, snow, hail and bright sunshine. Keeps me on the right path in Wessex, too.

There is a snag that the automatic portrait/landscape rotation feature sometimes causes Memory-Map to drop out, but it's fine with that feature "off" and anyway it recovers so quickly it's only a minor nuisance (they're working on a fix).

Oh, and it works fine as a phone, too!

Writing over a year later, I'm still very pleased and continue to find new things I can do with it. Great!

Bought this phone to replace a HTC HD2 that finally died, had it for a little over 3 months. Since I was spending a big chunk of change (I'm a student) on a phone rather than stringing out the investment with a contract, I wanted something that performed well without any reliance on firmware or android updates. I also wanted a removable battery and back cover (so it could cool down if there were any overheating problems). Considering the size of my previous device, I looked at the SE Arc S, a refurbished Galaxy SII, the SE Xperia Ray and finally the Xperia Active.

My biggest misgiving was that my big hands would prohibit typing or use of the relatively small screen. This hasn't been a problem in the slightest. The screen if anything is easier to operate than that of the HD2 (with 4.3") versus the Active's 3.0", because the phone is smaller and can be operated with one hand quite easily. Sony have clearly done their homework, this thing really sits in the hand well, unlike thinner, wider handsets that cut too deep into the base of your thumb, this unit is a little chunkier and curved more ergonomically -- the result being that you can text as fast as you would on an old Nokia 3210.

For every day use, the phone is fantastic. I can't speak to the Ice Cream Sandwich update -- I wanted a phone that works and I know that Android v2.3 (which comes installed in the phone with a few tweaks from Sony) is tried and tested. The tweaks are very helpful too, simple but often absent from other takes on the Android OS. Most useful for me have been the ability to access hardware functions from a pre-placed panel (notably turning down the display from brightest to medium, very useful for conserving battery life), and the ability to sort applications by date installed as well as alphabetically.
