4.0 out of 5 stars A smartPHONE rather than a SMARTphone, 2 Oct 2007
By S. Booker (Liverpool) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
First things first, to explain the title of this review. My last phone was an O2 XDA Exec, in term of data entry and connectivity it couldnt be beaten (at the time). However as I lived with it it became painfully obvious that the designers (HTC) had built a PDA with a phone bolted on. In contrast the Sony Ericsson P990i is first and foremost a very good phone with some PDA functionality thrown in.

The good points:
This device is extreamly versatile. There are at least three ways of accessing any given function. This means that the phone can be adapted to suit your style.
Compared to some smartphones/PDA's of a similar age it is small enough to be pocket friendly.
Standard smartphone features that allow you to access your e-mails, office documents and RSS news feeds on the move.
Full 3G and Wi-Fi support for fast internet downloads.
Symbian OS - Is far better at managing the limited resources in a phone than Windows Mobile is.
Although the Sony Ericsson P990i does have a touch screen it is turned off with the flip closed. The screen is also recessed into the phone so you don't touch it with your face when making a call.
Full media player - so with a decent SD card (this phone can take up to 4Gb) you no longer have to lug your MP3 player around as well as a your phone.

The bad points.
Although this phone does have a querty keyboard it is tiny and very esy to type the wrong letter in. The number of times I've typed "p" instead of delete is untrue.
Symbian OS - For the legions of Windows Mobile users out there is will mean learning a new operating system (it not that hard though).

If you want a device that is going to be phone first and a data tool second then you could do a lot worse than this. However for serious data entry and manipulation that tiny keyboard is going to drive you potty.

1.0 out of 5 stars beware this seller, 31 Jan 2009
Go Buy 2000 supply their products without any means of identification whatsoever. The brand new product I purchased came with, no means of initiating the warranty period and the authenticity of the product could not be verified. I believe that other sellers products are genuine but Go Buy 2000 supplied a so-called brand new product to me in a re-sealable plastic bag! and not a blister-pack as advertised. They will also tell you that Amazon advise them not to refund postage costs. This is of course a lie. Of course Amazon do not advise their sellers not to refund postage. Judging by the feedback Go Buy 2000 are getting it can only be a matter of time before Amazon suspend their account. If you don't want to be disappointed please use another seller
