I returned this item because of excessive noise from the motor on the video recording and found less noise with just the standard microphone on my Sony HDR-HC3.
disappointing am afraid, although it does pick up sound quite well, it also brings with it a noteable electronic buzz, meaning that every time you film and edit, you will need to do extra "cleaning" on your audio track with a relevant software. i think i was better off with my video camera's inbuilt microphone. i would not recommend this product.
This is actually a great bit of kit that I use to record small ensembles with and the results are very good. It's a shame that you have to buy this though as with my previous sony camcorders i've plugged in high quality stereo mics so was a little miffed that I had no choice but to get this one but luckily it's pretty good!
