Well done Sony! 8 Feb 2004
    By A Customer
This is a really great product. I bought it about a month ago and haven't been let down by it yet. It's great for people who don't have space for a great big box next to the TV. That's one of the reasons why I bought it. It's also really portable - just unplug it from the mains and the tele stick it in a box and take it to a friend's if they haven't got a DVD player and you feel like watching a movie. It's stylish, and you can change it to suit your mood and even make your own fascias for it! I must admit that I don't bother, but this might be good for some people. It comes with a fascia as well. I found it great value. It's not packed with features but it's got more than you need. I've now got a huge DVD collection thanks to it - well done Sony, you've done it again!

Whilst the Picot does appear more to be a fashion accessory rather than a dvd player it does actually work very well. You would need your head examining to pay the RRP of this product but at this price you are getting excellent value for money. It is ideal as your second dvd player for your bedroom, it would however look out of place with your main tv.

Be warned that the player does not use a scart plug but av plugs (the yellow, red and white cables ). If your tv supports that or s-video then great, if not then you may need to buy another cable as the scart adaptor that sony provide is slightly dodgy.

At this price you cannot fault this player as it does exactly what it claims on the box. Consider that this is a unique dvd player design and it may be regarded as a design classic in the future (such as the ipod).

Well worth buying at this price.

    Not quite region-free 22 Aug 2004
    By A Customer
The Sony DVP-PQ2 Picot DVD player is as good a product as you would expect from a company with such a consistant reputation. It is straightforward to use, versatile in formats and the controls are well designed. As suggested by many reviewers (here on Amazon and elsewhere) despite the underside being clearly maked Region-2 it does in fact play a number of non-Region-2/non-Region-0 DVDs. For example MTV's "Daria the Movie" which is marked Region-1 and NTSC (obviously purchased in the US) plays perfectly well on the Picot - as do all UK and US DVDs I have tested WITH ONE rather strange EXCEPTION so far. Clearly there is more to DVD region-locking than I previously understood since attempting to play (the US purchased) "Mae West - I'm No Angel" which is marked as Region-1 on the disc results in the on-screen message "PLAYBACK PROHIBITED BY AREA LIMITATIONS". But then I suppose there had to be some sort of a catch when it only cost forty quid :)
Nice try Sony (and whoever attempted the region-unlocking on this device). Better luck next time.
