The idea, Sony says, is to provide a second DVD player for the home that is small, stylish and portable. It is certainly the latter--there is even a mini carrying slot in its underside to help you transport it from room to room. It is, though, a little large to sit beside a portable telly in the spare bedroom, and as to its "stylishness" thats a matter for your own judgement--but you can personalise the look somewhat by creating your own inlays that sit under a clear plastic fascia plate.
The DVP-PQ1 can accommodate audio output to an amplifier or television via standard phono (RCA) sockets or co-axial digital out and video output to either composite video or S-Video. Although no leads are supplied for either coaxial or S-Video (Sony classes this as an entry level machine), Sony do provide a set of phono (RCA) cables with a SCART adapter--which work fine. Despite its entry level status the player supports a wide range of disc formats. The DVP-PQ1 is compatible with different DVD/CD media including DVD-R, CD-RW and audio CD. It will even play MP3 files stored on CD-R discs.
Audio and video quality is superb--even through a portable TV. There are no display features on the player itself, but information such as playing time, remaining time and MP3 track titles can be displayed onscreen.
This is a very neat little DVD player indeed. It lacks the sophisticated features of some models, but the features it does have work very well. As Sony suggests, it would make a good second player; or if you don't require state-of-the-art output from a DVD player, it might be worth considering in that capacity too. --Sandra Vogel

Protable Sony shines,
This review is from: Sony DVP-PQ1 DVD Player (Electronics)
Its not often that a product can be called perfect. Infact, i dont think ive ever bought anything thats ever been absolutely perfect. However, I do like my brands and Sony has to be among the best. When i purchase equipment to share my living space with it has to have a certain 'i dont know what'.The Sony DVP-PQ1 DVD Player has this. Looks wise, its fantastic. I challenge anyone to find a better looking DVD player, and one that takes next to no space at all. Whats more, i challenge anyone to find a better looking model that can function like this. Ive struggled and searched to find a chic device thats able to play VCD and MP3 as well as DVD. Now i have one, and it was so cheap, im considering buying one for the kitchen too! Ive seen no glitches in picture, and sound quality is excellent through my Sony MD Hi-Fi with standard phono cables. The Sony DVP-PQ1 DVD Player is high quality powerfull equipment at a bargain basement price. THANK SONY FOR THAT!

DVD "The Next Generation",
This review is from: Sony DVP-PQ1 DVD Player (Electronics)
I was looking around for a budget priced player when I seen the Sony Picot advertised in a daily newspaper. It caught my eye, why ? its ability to be taken to anywhere you want with ease. Not quite a portable but a device which can handle the job. Before buying I looked at a real model on the high street. Thats all I needed. Easy to "plug and play" however, buy separately an S-Video (4 pin) in/out cable connection if you have a new television as picture quality gets better. My only gripe is that loading is a finger press and lift manual operation but then again I am a very fussy person. Be aware that Sony launched this product in August to appeal to the younger 18-25 ish crowd. Something I found out later and could not quite understand why (the specification for basically a hot player ? or that I'm 40 ish ?).Buy now and have fun !

Unusual and Fantastic,
This review is from: Sony DVP-PQ1 DVD Player (Electronics)
I bought the Sony DVP-PQ1 Picot because at first sight it is stunningly original in design, at a very reasonable price, is packed full of useful features and is made by Sony a name renowned for design quality and functionality. The Picot is a DVD player, CD re-writer and CD recorder that can play video CD's, and playback MP3 music files. Another great feature of the Picot is that is can play recorded DVD discs and re-written DVD discs. What first struck me with the Picot is the very unusual squatting stance of the unit; which is very unusual compared to any of the other cuboid shaped units that saturate the DVD market. I found that the unit however unusual fits in well with my humble living room and compliments my TV perfectly. The player allows for direct access to the loading bay to insert discs and access controls efficiently in a no-nonsense approach with controlled which can be mastered in minutes without much need to read the manual. The remote control that comes with the unit is very easy to control and master. It is finished in the same cool frosted light blue lime material as the unit and is as well built and feels as solid as the DVD player. The buttons are well placed and ergonomically efficient and the remote overall feels as if it could take the odd knock and fall. I am very happy with my purchase of the Picot and I am the envy of all my friend. The Picot has great capabilities and a truly original and robust design which will undoubtedly stand the test of time to be yet another Sony classic. At such a competitive price with so much for your money, the Picot is the choice for the fashion minded and economically competent.
