Best Upscaling DVD Player on Da Planet!!!,
By
This review is from: Sony DVPNS78 - DVD Player With HDMI & 1080P Upscaling - Silver (Electronics)
if you are looking for an upscaling player, on a budget and cannot afford a PS3 or the latest Blu-Ray/HD-DVD player then look no further. This Sony rocks! the picture (and also audio if you consider investing on the latest surround sound kit. mine is a "plain" 2.1 setup and still it feels like im on a cinema!) is amazing. read: "near Blu-ray" quality. i can tell because i have a Sony 1080p LCD. end of story. this is my 4th dvd player in 4 years and my first Sony. this is every penny's worth. you will not be disappointed. throw in a ver. 1.3 HDMI cable and you are done. the only reason i gave it a 4 out 5 is because the settings/features can be fiddly and takes time to learn all the tech terms and stuff. but overall...THE BEST UPSCALING 1080P DVD PLAYER ON THE PLANET. nothin' compares Sony. just sit back, relax and enjoy the popcorn.

great player - easy to make multi-region,

Switching brand from a Philips DVD player that broke down after half a year, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by this player. Time will tell of course but it gives the impression as being much sturdier and thought through. (e.g. the philips did not have an eject button on the remote; as the tray opens very slowly you really have to wait until you can change the DVD) Sony has really thought about a lot of detail. E.g. even small things like it is easy to put in and take out the batteries on the remote. There are a few buttons on the DVD remote that you can use to control your TV. The manual gives you the codes that allow you to adjust the remote for competing brands TV. Apart from this the image quality is VERY good!
Finally, I was able to make this player multi-region in 2 minutes. I used an One For All bought for £15 at Argos (One for all 4 Way - 5344905 (or URC 7740 Prime Line 46)). And than : 1. Put the DVD on standby and make sure no disc is in the machine 2. Press the DVD button on the remote 3. Press and hold the magic button until the led flashes twice. 4. Enter the device code 0533 5. Hold magic button until the led flashes twice. 6. Press 994. 7. Press magic once (don't hold). 8. Enter the first code from the list below and repeat 5 to 8 for the four remaining codes on the list 001891 002552 000953 002214 000795 9. Make sure the power is off. 10. Press 1 to 5 on the remote control (if success appears on the screen of the DVD player you can now finish by powering down the DVD player). 11. Make sure the power is on. 12. Press 1 to 5 on the remote control. 13. You will see success appearing on the screen of the DVD player (you can now finish by powering down the DVD player) I have checked it so far with region 1 and region 2 discs.

Sony at the top of their game,

This DVD player is proof for me that Sony are back at the top of their game.
Slim, stylish and well laid out, this is a classy looking machine although there is a little hint of similar Philips machines about the reflective front fascia. Unlike some reviewers here I like the look and feel of the remote, it will also control the basics on many makes of TV. With a good HDMI cable this DVD player delivers superb upscaled DVD quality to my HD LCD TV. This has a dramatic effect on recent DVD releases but also (surprisingly for me) old BBC DVDs such as Blakes 7! This player I understand is multiregion capable. That does not mean that it is Multiregion already when you buy it from Amazon, it means that should be possible to make it multiregion by entering a code with a remote control such as a One For All remote. Please do take note of this as 'multiregion capable' could be misleading. Recommended although the black model looks better (but is more expensive, go figure).
