Amazon.co.uk Review

The Sony DVP-NS700VS is a slim DVD player that packs a lot into one box, including surround-sound decoders. The NS-700 has Sony's typically classy looks and, although its construction is a tad light in places, the finish is certainly good. It can handle most disc formats, including CD-RW, NTSC DVDs and Sony's new multi-channel surround audio format SACD (Super Audio CD). About the only thing it won't play are discs of MP3 files.

It's easy to operate and Sony's usual excellent manual and pre-set modes make it easy to install. The remote is logically laid out, although some of the buttons are a trifle small. The picture quality is superior to the majority of budget DVD players as you would expect, though there are some minor screen glitches with strong blocks of colour, particularly red. The scan and slow-motion are fluid and smooth, while the still-frame mode is excellent.

Dolby Digital is the standard surround-sound format for DVD discs; Digital Theatre Sound is a similar but slightly superior system currently gaining support. This can make the player remarkable value depending on your set-up. You'll need to route the sound out through an AV amplifier, of course. If you don't fancy cluttering up your living room with another black box and a mass of speakers, you can send the sound to your stereo and use the virtual surround features instead. These don't match real surround sound but are a handy compromise. The NS700 has a lot of functions packed into its slim box and is undoubtedly good value. You'll need to plan your set-up though, the built-in surround sound decoders can save you money but makes less sense when partnering the NS700 with an AV amplifier which also has these decoders, as many of the more recent models do. It's also worth considering this if you are looking to consolidate home cinema with your audio into a single system, as the 700 does a good job as an audio CD player - with the added bonus of support for SACD. --Miles Berkeley

Product Description

The Sony DVP-NS700VS DVD player features both DVD-Video and Super Audio CD multi-channel playback capabilities, representing the ultimate in video and audio technology. This new combination player is much more than a standard DVD player--its audio capabilities rank alongside high-end audio systems. The DVP-NS700VS can play back two-channel stereo Super Audio CD software and 3/3.1/4/4.1/5 and 5.1 multi-channel Super Audio CD software. Thanks to a newly developed twin laser pick-up device, with the ability to play back perfect DVD-Video, SACD and traditional audio CDs, including CD-R/RW discs, it utilises Direct Stream Digital (DSD) audio processing technology for SACD playback and features a 2822,4kHz/1 bit DSD Audio D/A Converter.

To maximise enjoyment of DVD-Video surround sound the DVP-NS700VS features Sony's unique Digital Cinema Sound (DCS) for 5.1 multi-channel speaker installations. Dolby Digital, DTS 5.1 channel, MPEG decoders and 192kHz/24 bit high performance Audio D/A Converter are integrated.

The DVP-NS700VS comes equipped with Sony's Digital Video Enhancer (DVE), providing sharper-edge detail on video images by minimising imperfections, such as overshooting. It also includes Precision Drive 2 System with Dynamic Tilt Compensation providing faster and more accurate disc reading by compensating any disc imperfections, along with Block Noise Reduction (BNR) for maximising picture quality of MPEG2 images by eliminating unwanted artefacts in scenes where gradated images and the movement of objects between two fields are present. A new remote commander with Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) for more advanced and convenient operation is included.

The DVP-NS700VS features an elegant design and slim-line profile that integrates seamlessly alongside Sony's latest Home AV products.

This unit was an upgrade from a unit that was only 2 years old so I wasn't expecting much of an improvement.... however the first DVD that I played soon changed my expectations for this mid priced unit.. it has now completely replaced my DVD & CD player in one single unit....

The picture qulity is as sharp or soft as you want it and the sound can be modified to make superb noises even on the most basic of televisions. As soon as my STR-DB870R amp arrived along with my sub-woofer the world never quite sounded the same again... to improve on this quality audio and visual reproduction you need to jump up to the £1000 mark so it's also great VFM for what it offers..

Downside [as with most Sony products] the manuals are somewhat ropey and disjointed when it comes to the complex setup for sound fields, and the on-screen display options are endless!!.... but this doesn't mean you need a degree in rocket science to set it up... even the most ludite of users will have it working less than 10 minutes after opening the box.

The SACD feature is a nice touch and will become extremely desirable as titles become available by mainstream artistes... at the moment it is a bit limited to Sony music with most SACD's being of the classical persuasion!!

Excellent sounds, great imaging, SACD compatable and looks beautiful in brushed aluminium finish.. about as far as you can go before you start to spend 'silly money'!!!

I recently bought the Sony DVPNS700 DVD player to replace a two-year old Pioneer DV525 unit. The Sony is aesthetically better matched to my Sony STRDB930 amp, both sit well together in elegant brushed silver thought the DVPNS700 is plastic fronted as apposed to the aluminium finish of the amp. I was aware that this player had just been discontinued by Sony, but as there is not much to add to the already impressive specifications (apart from perhaps MP3 playback capabilities) it did not bother me in the slightest.

This Sony DVD player is well put together and delivers an extremely crisp picture, especially when using the S-Video connections. The sound quality can only be described as stunning when mated a Dolby Digital enabled amplifier such as the STRDB930 I use. All aspects of the sound and picture are adjustable via the on-screen menu which is easy to navigate via a good remote control unit.

This player is far superior to the old Pioneer it replaced and I would recommend it for DVD enthusiasts and beginners alike. Throw in SACD capabilities and you have a great overall package...

Sony does it again! 15 Oct 2002
Excellent value for money with this Sony DVD player. Lots of on screen menu's to set up you picture control to give you the best possible reproduction. It is easy to navigate and if your like me and like lots of pretty lights on the front then you cant go wrong. The surround processor works well with a NICAM tv or through a basic stereo system, but to realy get the benefit whack it on a prologic amp and away you go.

I would recommend this product to anyone as it will match most top end priced DVD players. and [...] you cant go wrong with the price on here. Look no further than this DVD player for great value packed with style and features.
