At last, a solution to alleviate our kids' boredom on long car journeys has arrived!
First impression is that it is compact and light, yet solidly constructed with good quality components.
I was worried that the screen would be a bit too small but its perfectly adequate to watch a movie on and no worse than an aeroplane headrest tv. It has the benefit of two built in headphone jacks, therefore avoiding the need to buy those ugly splitter devices, and a handy usb port to link to your pc. Supplied accessories include a neat little remote control,in car charger and av leads.
NB THERE ARE NO SUPPLIED HEADPHONES, which is a bit tight, but thankfully I knew about this already, so I purchased two pairs of the excellent foldable JVC headphones to go with it. The sound output of the unit's loudspeaker is a bit tinny (like a laptops) but the volume level on it is superb, even to my ageing ears.
Unfortunately whilst it plays jpeg and divx format it is not multiregional. I have searched for a hack to get over this problem but so far, all to no avail.
In use, it runs very quietly and the remote has an excellent range. The only niggle I have is that the screen size format is not automatic and you have to remember to set it accordingly before playing the disc otherwise you'll either have to accept its most recent setting, or stop the disc to reset it. Perhaps a firmware update could resolve this issue?
It extends fully to 180 degrees so is perfect for in car viewing using an appropriate (again not supplied) dvd player holder. It can also output through a tv via the av leads which is useful if you're in a hotel (or even in the home as a spare dvd player). The claimed battery life of 5hours is spot on with my unit.
The free dvd of Bolt is a further sweetener to yet another excellent amazon deal for me!
