Amazon.co.uk Review

The Sony DVP-NS400 is a DVD player complete with a surround sound decoder and some excellent little touches. The slim NS400 has Sony's typical classy finish, sleek and purposeful. The menu system is mercifully easy to use and the player is simple to set up. Some thought has obviously been put into the onscreen menus, which can be confusing on some players and require frequent reference to the manual. It'll play CD-RW and CD-R discs, which can come in handy if you've a PC with CD-Writer, but for many people it's one of those "might come in useful one day" features. It'll also play NTSC discs, which is much more likely to be put to the test. It also has a handy bookmark feature, which is great for cataloguing your favourite bits --the songs in a musical for example. You can also set potential controls on specific DVDs. The memory available for both these functions is 50 slots. Another smart extra is quick navigation between chapters. This is often a clumsy procedure on other systems, requiring you to go back to the main menu.

On the back there are two SCART sockets, always nice to see on any DVD player. Another area where this player scores over the simpler Sony offerings is in the inclusion of a Digital Dolby decoder offering surround sound via a full set of analogue outputs. The big advantage here is that if you've already invested in an AV amplifier without a built-in decoder you can add DVD and Dolby Digital in one go. If you don't already have the required amplifier then it's a less impressive feature as just about every modern AV amplifier has an integrated decoder apart from some budget models so, if and when you add surround sound to your system, you'll be duplicating the decoder. There's also a virtual mode which attempts to replicate the surround sound effect with a standard set of stereo speakers. Like most such systems its effectiveness is somewhat limited--there's just no substitute for the real thing. The remote control is sensibly organised and has nice big buttons for the main features. Picture quality is superb, Sony once again delivers an excellent result onscreen. It has rich colours and a crisp image. It has a notably smooth scan and slow motion too and there's a terrific "show me that again" button which plays back the last 10 seconds.

The usefulness of the surround sound decoder is debatable, but there is no doubting the quality of the player itself with some nice control features to lift it above the crowd.--Miles Berkeley

Product Description

The Sony DVP-NS400D represents outstanding value for money. As well as DVD and CD playback, this player provides CD-R/RW playback facilities. A Sony-developed Digital Video Enhancer strengthens image detail and outline without overshoot. The DVP-NS400D also features Sony's unique Digital Cinema Sound (DCS) for 5.1 multi-channel speaker installations. This advanced audio facility provides a range of virtual surround sound modes including Virtual Multi Dimension, Virtual Multi Rear and Virtual Rear Shift. The DVP-NS400D integrates a Dolby Digital 5.1 channel decoder.

Ease of operation is a focus of the DVP-NS400D. Sony's Magic Pad provides a clear Graphical User Interface whilst playing. At the same time the player's Picture Navigation system makes operation child's play: from angle selection to strobe playback, this intuitive on-screen multi picture overview allows users to master the player's operating system in minutes and then get the most from their new DVD-Video. As well as controlling the DVD player the DVP-NS400D's remote commander can be programmed to control many brands of TV and Home Cinema receiver.

The core feature of the DVP-NS400D is Sony's new Precision Drive2 System - which includes new High Speed Stepping motor and the Dynamic Tilt Compensation mechanism that provides faster and more accurate tracking of playback of DVD's. Compatible with any kind of DVD-Video disc, Precision Drive2 compensates for disc warp and other disc imperfections.

To provide reliable, high picture quality, the new players integrate Block Noise Reduction technology, a new circuit that filters the borders of the component blocks, significantly reducing on-screen block noise artifacts. With respect to exciting sound quality, TV Virtual Surround sound - digital sound created from discrete multi channel source - optimises the surround sound quality of your TV set's existing speakers to provide an enhanced surround sound effect without multi-channel speakers. A Centre Level Up facility provides clear dialogue, even during fast action sequences, while dynamic, wide, night and standard sound settings are also available. This feature also works with Stereo (2ch) equipment.

I didn't get my player from Amazon, I got mine with a hardware multi-region addition - but, that aside...The player itself is marvellous, the menus are very simple, the sound options are superb the block reduction thing is probably only really noticeable by somebody who reviews these things for a living though. CD playback is good, again - probably only a few people will notice that it's not, alledgedly, as good as a normal cd player. I couldn't really tell the difference. Mine's hooked up to a Toshiba 28" widescreen screen and does a wonderful job. Totally pleased with my purchase - and from other reviews of the little brother to this one - the 300 - it would appear that the professional reviewers like it too. There are loads of settings to play with, as I say, the menus are very easy to go through. The remote can control the basics of the telly too - pretty much a very nice, slim DVD player, with enough features to last it into the future (out of the box Dolby 5.1 is pretty neat). AND it's got SONY on the front of it....... :-)

I purchased the Sony DVD Player, as an extra Christmas present for myself. I was really surprised by the fantastic price, and the prompt processing of my order. I was really impressed with the ease of use, and the simple on screen instructions to set up the player.
The picture quality is first class, clear crisp images and excellent colour quality.
The surround system is excellent, it feels like the whole sound system engulfs the room. I have also enjoyed playing my music CD's, as the vocals and music are crisp and sharp, and I can increase the volume at the touch of the simple remote control. I am really impressed with my new player, and would recommend it to all.
