Manufacturer's description
Whatever you've got planned, if you've packed the TX5 you've got the shot. Waterproof, dust-proof, shock-proof and freeze-proof, this new Cyber-shot has been designed to keep pace with all the action. Available in five sleek colours, the TX5 looks equally at home whether you're hitting the hills on your bike, or heading out for dinner. While smart features like Intelligent Sweep Panorama make taking great pictures simple and fun, beneath the TX5's protective cover lies some serious imaging technology. The 10.2 megapixel Exmor R™ CMOS Sensor helps you capture detail-packed pictures in low light, while the Carl Zeiss lens with 4x optical zoom and 25mm wide angle put intimate portraits and dramatic travel scenes all in the frame. And switching to HD movie shooting mode is easy, thanks to the enhanced touchscreen interface. With this clever little camera in your bag or pocket it's never been easier to grab that once in a lifetime moment.

The first waterproof Cyber-shot
This is a camera that's been built to match your active life. It may look small and superslim, with a depth of 17.7mm, but it'll take just about anything you can throw at it. Waterproof down to 3 metres, the TX5 lets you jump in and start snapping the fun. Changing settings is simple on the touchscreen, which will respond even if you're underwater or wearing gloves. Planning a skiing trip? The TX5 can deal with freezing conditions down to -10°C and even keeps shooting after being dropped from a height of 1.5 metres.

Intelligent Sweep Panorama shots
has enhanced the already impressive Sweep Panorama technology so that now you can even capture moving subjects in these extra-wide panoramic images. Just press the shutter, sweep the camera horizontally or vertically and the TX5 will capture up to 100 images in a quick burst, then seamlessly stitch them together to create the ultimate high-resolution panoramic shot.

Brilliant photos even in low light
No need now to be held back by low-light conditions, the TX5 captures the moment in sharp detail thanks to its super-sensitive 10.2 megapixel Exmor R™ CMOS Sensor. Developed exclusively by Sony, it works by reducing noise on the sensor itself, giving you crisp, clean images in dusk or darkly-lit interiors, and even underwater. The TX5 also includes two low-light shooting modes, Handheld Twilight and Anti Motion Blur, which automatically take six frames at high speed and combine them into one optimised shot.

Press the shutter and the Exmor R™ CMOS sensor, working with the BIONZ image processor, enables you to shoot at an incredible 10 high-resolution frames per second at full 10 megapixel resolution.

The big screen
Spin the TX5 round and you've got a 3" Wide Clear Photo LCD touchscreen, with 230k dot resolution for excellent detail and contrast. An intuitive interface means a range of modes and settings are just a touch away. Tap the screen, reinforced with a layer of hardened glass, and scroll through your shots in vivid colour by just sliding your finger across the screen.

Press the shutter and the Exmor R™ CMOS sensor, working with the BIONZ image processor, enables you to shoot at an incredible 10 frames per second at full 10 megapixel resolution. By using a mechanical shutter, distortion is reduced and every move is caught in crisp detail.

Focusing on quality images
Great images start with a great lens. The TX5 is fitted with an optical lens made by renowned specialists Carl Zeiss, which means you'll get excellent image quality even at high magnifications. With the 4x optical zoom far away scenes can be brought into sharp focus, and 25mm wide angle capability gives you freedom to pack more into each scene. Plus with Optical SteadyShot stabilising the image, you won't need to worry about hand movement blurring your pictures.

Your home movies in beautiful HD
The TX5 isn't just about taking great still pictures. Press the movie button on the touchscreen and you're instantly ready to shoot in 720p HD. Great quality sound is taken care of, thanks to the stereo microphone.

Choosing the right settings
The TX5 is equipped with a number of smart features to take the guesswork out of matching your camera settings to your chosen subject. Select Intelligent Auto mode and the camera will automatically recognise eight commonly encountered scenes and adjust settings to ensure well-exposed results wherever and whenever you shoot.

Seen a great shot but high contrasts are causing washed-out backgrounds and detail lost in shadow? Just switch to Backlight Correction HDR and the TX5 will take two images at different exposure settings, then combine the best elements of each into one natural-looking image.

Purchased this camera after drowning my second compact camera in the pool whilst on holiday!
I wanted a small compact camera I could take anywhere, which would be waterproof, had a wide angle lens (25mm) plus good picture quality. The picture quality is better than my previous lumix (fx35)and canon ixus 80 cameras. The shutter lag is almost non existent, and it can shoot 10 fps! There is some very clever technology which allows handheld shots in low light and HDR pictures too. I can confirm it takes great HD video and underwater pics. The panorama mode is also a simple point and shoot affair. For such a compact camera this is truly outstanding. Currently sony are also offering a free 3 yr guarantee! Highly recommended.

I bought this as I'd been using my iPhone for over 12 months as my main camera and it simply wasn't fit for purpose. Also due to going on a family holiday with waterparks on the agenda I was convinced that this would be a great camera.
I wasn't disappointed, this camera does everything it says on the tin. I find the 'auto' mode for selecting the appropriate type of environment for taking the picture to be a fantastic option and the ease of the user interface was the main reason I chose it over the fuji finepix which is also waterproof but has a bigger MP image capture as well as a better optical zoom.

    This camera is simply AWESOME!

The TX5 is the perfect holiday or rough outdoors event camera. It is waterproof, shock proof, dust proof and freeze resistant.

Other 'tough' cameras do not look this sexy or are this slim!

The extra features like Hand-Held Twighlight mode for low-light/night shots without flash work amazingly, as does the intelligent Sweep Panorama. These come in very handy to record memories of night scenes or wide expanses of landscape.

The 10 frames a second burst mode is handy for action shots but only really works in bright daylight, otherwise the pictures are not sharp as the shutter speed is so fast.

The touch screen is very good, much improved over the old T-10, T-500 models, and is very responsive, even more impressive considering it is a waterproof camera.

The video recording in 720p mode is very good also and I like the ability to zoom silently during filming. The anti-shake steadyshot technology works well and helps to make your videos that little bit smoother. There is even an 'underwater' scene mode when in video mode to deal with the different colour balance of light in water, so your footage comes out looking the natural shade.

However, there are some flaws, which considering the tech packed in this miniture marvel, is not so bad, but should be mentioned. Due to the wide angle lens (25mm) and internal lens mechanism, there is quite a lot of barrel distortion at the widest setting. This is very noticeable in video if you have straight lines (sign post, doors etc) and they will appear curved like in a fish-eye lens.

The video quality in daylight or bright indoors is beautiful but in low-light it's just ok, certainly better than the older CCD sensor based, T-500/T90 series, but not quite as good as the Sony WX5.

i wanted a new digital camera that could cope with close ups using a macro which could define the hairs on the back of a bee / butterfly etc. wow what a pleasant supprise this fits the bill and experimenting with all the options of the camera have found that the camara can compensate for a bright sky by blending two photo exposures and blending the results. i still have alot to learn and experiment with this camera and so far so good a great little camera to work with and not bulky either. For me its a real pleasure to own.

    Sony DSCTX5S Cyber-shot Digital Camera - Silver (10.2MP, 4x Optical Zoom) 3 inch LCD
Brilliant Little Camera, does what is says on the tin, I use it as a point and shoot when my DSLR is too big to carry around, i.e. when in town or at parties etc, also brill for those quick macro shots, keep it in your pocket for everyday happenings (yes it really is that small) bought the Folix reflective screen to protect itFoliX FX-ANTIREFLEX antireflective screen protector for Sony DSC-TX5 / TX-5 - Anti-glare screen protection! Just to give the touch screen some added protection, used them before so they do work, If you are looking for a quick easy to use camera with loads of features that actually work then this is the one, Yes it has it's limitations and of course a DSLR will do more, but this is a point and shoot and will cover most situations and give decent prints, it also has a cracking little video system on board as well, again will do more than most people need. So no problems in recommending this camera for general use and holiday snaps with video facility when your favourite pop star appears!!

This has most of the functionality of our larger Sony camera, but is highly portable. It takes much, much better quality photos than our previous slimline pocket camera (a Casio Exilim) but is only slightly bigger (it fits in the same case so to all intents and purposes when in the case it is the same size). We've not tried out the 'waterproof' bit of this, but it is reassuring to know that it can handle getting wet.

We've been very impressed with this and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
