1.0 out of 5 stars Bad picture quality, 11 Nov 2007
By T. Bandy (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Being a chap that trusts Sony products I was really looking forward to owning the DSC-T200 and assumed that Sony would have made a camera that produced fantastic photos as well as all the bells and whistles. Boy was I wrong! This is a great camera, apart from the fact that the picture quality is totally rubbish. My previous camera was a DSC-P200 (7.2MP) and this utterly trounces the T200 on picture quality. Sony have clearly upped the megapixels but thrown away all that extra data by compressing the image to two thirds the size of the images produced by the P200, what a waste! This produces dull, noisy images with a lot of compression artifacts to try and remove some of the noise. The manager in the Sony Center Croydon quite belligerently commented that in order to get the smile detection, touchscreen etc Sony has compromised on picture quality. Totally unacceptable! Don't by this if you value your photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Took a while to get used to but great camera..., 19 Nov 2007
By Satchell (London UK) - See all my reviews
Had been wanting a new high quality compact for a while and went for this one after trying out a friends T100. I really wasn't sure about the picture quality at first (Particularly landscapes) but after a while I have got used to it and I now think it is really great. Having a touch screen to navigate the options is so much easier than silly buttons and most of the options are actually useful, very good at evening and low light shots, very good for people and really excellent in good light. Another big plus is that it remembers what you last told it to do, rather than having to reprogramme it each time. Flash never great but I don't like flash photos anyway? Also it is really nice to look at and surprisingly doesn't feel flimsy.

5.0 out of 5 stars fun to use - and that's what matters!, 4 Oct 2008
By Seb (West Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews
Sure, if you want really really good professional photos this may not be perfect. But you'd have to spend at least £400 to get pictures that good! There is nothing wrong with the image quality on this camera (and bear in mind that 8 mega pixels is A4 size, so chances are you'll be shrinking them anyway which will 100% remove any 'poor quality' areas).

This is a fantastic camera, with tonnes of features everyone will enjoy, and a touchscreen that makes everything so much faster (you don't have to spend 20 minutes going through menues, you can just press the buttons in 2 or 3 touches). It really is extremely FUN TO USE, which means you'll be snapping away all day and it will be for your enjoyment instead of just "photos for the family".

The picture quality is far superior to many other cameras, and much better than any phone camera! The flash charges quickly, the lens cover has a very smooth operation (unlike this camera's predecessor and successor), and it takes photos almost instantly on button press.

My only concern is that it can be a little blurry if you're moving, but again any camera would be the same. One day they might improve the image stabilisers on compact digital cameras. Until then this is one of the best cameras on the market right now.

I have heard complaints about the menu system asking you to confirm everything - this is not the case. There is an optional feature that explains every menu operation to you as a tutorial for using the camera, and it is easily switched off.

P.S I would recommend avoiding the T300 (next model in this series). It's specification may sound more impressive but it's a little 'rough' and compression problems are even more obvious.
