Product Description

Product Description

More compact than its predecessor, the P9, the Sony DSC-P10 five-megapixel digital camera is an ideal camera for the style conscious not willing to compromise on image quality. The camera is also one of the first to be compatible with Sony's new Memory Stick Pro, which delivers up to 1 GB of storage.

The DSC-P10 contains a host of features that allows the user to personalise their shots. The five-megapixel resolution allows users to zoom and crop images to get just the image they want. Until now zooming in meant sacrificing image quality, but Sony's Smart Zoom technology intelligently adjusts the zoom ratio according to the image resolution. The camera delivers high-quality images even in large formats.

Shots in difficult conditions are now worry-free with a bigger assortment of Scene Selection modes that automatically adjust the camera settings for a range of environments. In addition to "Twilight", "Twilight Portrait" and "Landscape", "Snow" lessens the greyness of images containing a large amount of white by adjusting colour temperature and enhancing luminance. The "High Speed Shutter" quickens the shutter speed in order to minimise camera shake when shooting fast moving objects and, in darker environments, "Fireworks" adjusts the shutter speed, flash, focus and ISO level to take great shots of these extremely difficult objects in a darker situation (such as fireworks).

The camera is more intelligent in making adjustments to light conditions thanks to a number of improvements. A new exposure warning means users always have the right exposure. In addition, Slow Synchronised Flash operates at a slow shutter speed for shooting foreground objects in twilight backgrounds. In daylight conditions, Auto Daylight Synchronised Flash automatically measures the exposure level for foreground objects, which have light behind them. Flash White Balance helps to make colour tones as realistic as possible in shots that contain a lot of reflective surfaces, such as under water. In these conditions, the camera might detect all light sources around the subject, creating a colour distortion. This is avoided by Flash White Balance, as the camera adjusts the white balance in the shot to restore colours to their true condition.

Another cool feature is the ability to capture video and audio enabling you to create your very own mini-movies. Depending on the size of Memory Stick, you can capture up to 44 minutes of VGA quality footage when using a 1 GB Memory Stick PRO. Any captured footage can then be viewed back on your TV. Battery life is often a problem with many digital cameras; however the DSC-P10 is supplied with an NP-FC11 Info Lithium battery providing more capacity and stamina than their predecessors.

I did plenty of online research into digital cameras before deciding on this one. You get a lot of good features for the price - not many cameras take sound with video, the menu system is simplicity itself, and it's all packed into a small but robust aluminium casing. The lens is excellent, recording incredibly sharp images with a good colour balance. There are the usual gripes about the price of Sony peripherals, and the little jack cover is a bit flimsy - but who cares when it takes such great pictures. Just make sure you take the cost of a bigger memory stick and possibly the Sony carry case into account.

One cool camera! 31 May 2003
Having experienced digital cameras in the past I was most impressed with the long lasting 'stamina' battery (lasts for up to 1 1/2 hours of continuous use). The camera also lets you know how long it has left to run before needing a re-charge, a simple but needed feature for planning your photo taking activity. 5 megapixels makes sure that you have a very detailed photo and with the option to reduce the number of pixels you are in complete control of the memory used on the memory stick. The camera has every feature you would want on a digital camera - zoom, red eye reduction, various modes for pictures etc. I like the movie feature which was better quality than I expected. Don't get me wrong, it is no replacement for a video camera but you get a nice movie at 16 frames per second with good quality sound. The pc interface works well and is also compatible with a Mac. No installation is required if you use OS X (Mac). The build of the camera feels up to sony's usual high standard and while using it you can't help but feel that you have a very nice gadget in your hands. The LCD viewer is small (as is the camera) but very clear to see your subject or even a playback of your photos/movies. If there is one thing about this pack that lets it down, it is the small memory stick (32 mb) that is supplied. I would prefer to have a cheaper camera and no memory stick or a slightly more expensive camera and a decent sized memory stick. Come on Sony! what can you really do with a 32mb stick these days and certainly with a 5 megapixel camera! In summary I would recommend this camera to both experianced high end users and newbies alike. You get a professional feature packed camera at a reasonable cost, it's small enough to carry around with you and can even take care of those always missed opportunities when you wish you had a movie camera with you! Now go get one you won't regret it.

Wicked!!!! 22 July 2003
This little camera is amazing. the 5 megapixels are extremely effective, which allows up to A4 size photos to be printed with a good amount of detail. It is a beautiful piece of equipment and i certainly recommend this for people who have a spare £350 lying around. The only downside is the cover on the av and usb jacks. it looks as if its about to break. however this minor defect is overlooked by the sheer power and amazement that the sony camera has. it is an all round unbeatable camera.
