Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The DSC-FX77 is the first Sony's Bluetooth enabled Digital Still Camera, which represents a significant advance in the design and operation of Sony cameras. This advanced feature lets the user share information with a range of computers and other devices supported by Bluetooth BIP (Basic Imaging Profile) from a distance of up to 10 m without any cable connection. Data transfer between the camera and a range of devices is smart, fun and convenient. As more and more peripheral devices develop BIP Bluetooth interfaces, the future vision of a wireless world comes closer to being reality. The DSC-FX77 uses Basic Imaging Profile, a Bluetooth profile that works 'peer to peer' between the camera and peripheral, helping to ensure fast, reliable and accurate data transfer. This state-of-the-art wireless connectivity allows the camera to interface to various peripheral devices without cables. For example, a BIP compatible laptop computer can be used to store images, with a full 4 Mega picture taking around 47 seconds to transfer whilst a VGA resolution image takes just 1.5 seconds. Another significant feature created by Bluetooth connectivity is the ability to remotely control and shoot with the camera from a laptop today, and in the future, from other BIP supported devices. This feature creates a 'real-time camera' with a thumbnail picture transmitted from the camera to the remote device at a data rate of 6.5 frames per second.Smart camera shoots great pictures. Alongside the Bluetooth technology, Sony has developed and integrated a host of advanced digital photography features. These include a Carl Zeiss Distagon lens (F2.8, 37mm) and a 4.0Megapixel Sony Super HAD CCD to provide outstanding image quality in any shooting conditions. The lens is housed within a rotating unit, a feature which enhances user creativity - you can even turn the lens through more than 180 degrees for example to take a self portrait, using the camera's LCD to frame the shot. Sony's new Smart Zoom technology provides up to 3.5x zoom capabilities, depending on picture resolution. Smart Zoom operates in a different way from other zoom technologies, providing telephoto features with no image deterioration. The camera comes with an extensive selection of prescribed scene mode settings, including twilight, twilight portrait, landscape and soft snap. Thanks to high-speed power up, short shutter interval and shutter time lag this camera ranks amongst one of the fastest Sony Cyber-shot models. The DSC-FX77 features a cradle, which offers various solutions. A USB interface and connection for quick and easy image download to a PC, a power supply for recharging batteries and an AV cable connection to televisions. The camera is supplied with image transfer software developed to help transfer and upload your favorite shots automatically to a selected directory on your PC.

    Futureproof 12 Dec 2002
    By A Customer
I used this camera for 1 week and decided it was the best thing since sliced bread!

The amazing functions and design make you think that somy have really thought about what makes a good camera and put it into the FX77.

At first it seem complicated to use, but you can leave it on one setting and just snap away. Down loading is just as simple via the cradle provided. The swivel lens is so cool and useful, and smart zoom is amazing. Movie facility is great and file sizes are not necessarily too big.

I recommend that a larger memory stick is purchased and you take time in learning all the different funtions of this camera.

I have used the bluetooth fuctionality yet but thats my next point of exporation. This camera is cutting edge produces amazing photos. The best buy in its class by far.

this is a much updated version of the DSC-F55E (which I previously owned, and incidently was the first ever available Memory Stick product). My thoughts on it are that the Bluetooth receiver rocks, works brilliant with my sony laptop. The design and build quality are outstanding. The best looking camera on the market in my opinion. The picture quality is noticeably better, especially indoor pictures seem a lot more "real". The docking cradle is a useful addition too. Recommended.

When purchasing this digital camera there were a couple of things that swayed me towards this Sony model. Firstly, I own a Sony laptop so I have several memory sticks already. Secondly it has bluetooth and being a bit of a gadget hunter I couldn't resist.

The picture quaility is superb but I was disappointed by the length of time it takes to actually take a photograph in low light conditions. It can take up to two seconds. It's worth being aware of this as you can miss your subjects if they move!

The supplied cradle is very useful as it helps eliminate clutter from your computer desk and it provides a very simple interface to your PC if you don't have a memory stick reader. Trasferring photographs only takes a couple of seconds using the USB.

Bluetooth operation was very straight forward using my Sony Vaio. You do need devices that are BIP (Basic Imaging Profile) compatiable, but I think most Bluetooth 1.1. devices are. My photos (size ~= 1.7Mb) take about 20 to 30 seconds to transfer via bluetooth. Mobile phones will soon support BIP so you could transfer pictures and then use MMS to send them to your friends.

Overall, I'm very impressed by this digital camera. It boasts fastest startup time, less than one second, which I found useful for those "Kodak Moments". It's very easy to use and even easier after you read the instruction manual. I have yet to try the movie feature but I don't really see any use for that. The supplied 16 Mb stick will hold about 10 pictures at full quaility so you will probably need to purchase another one or two at either 64Mb or 128Mb. It takes Memory Stick PRO so you could get a 512MB or 1Gb stick! These are expensive but you can take pictures until the cows come home. A second battery is a useful addition also.

All-in-all an excellent buy for gadget hunters such as myself. For the more basic user, I would suggest looking at the Sony DSC-P12, which is a 5 mega pixel camera. It doesn't have bluetooth but it does come with a second battery included.
