Product Description

Product Description

The Sony DCR-TRV250 camcorder delivers all the benefits of Digital8 recording quality in a compact chassis. In addition to its crisp, clear digital video and stereo audio, the TRV250 can also stream live and recorded moving video to a PC via USB. Transfer video to your PC via iLink interface (also known as FireWire) to edit your masterpiece with the included software.

Image stabilisation: Sony's SteadyShot picture stabilisation smoothes and steadies your images without degrading picture quality. Sony does it with motion sensors--a more accurate system than those used by many other camcorders on the market.

Optics

  • 1/6-inch CCD with 460,000 gross pixels
  • 20x optical zoom
  • 700x digital zoom
  • f1.6-f2.4
  • Focal distance: 2.5-50 mm
  • Shutter speed: 1/60 to 1/4,000 (AE mode)

More features: now you can capture video even in total darkness. Sony's NightShot system uses infrared light to capture images invisible to the human eye. You can shoot subjects such as a sleeping baby up to 10 feet away in total darkness. With the optional HVL-IRC NightShot light, you can even capture images from up to 100 feet away.

Sony's Stamina power management system and InfoLithium battery give the TRV250 incredible operating time. To keep tabs on battery life, Sony's AccuPower meter displays the number of minutes remaining--right in the viewfinder.

The TRV250 features a 2.5-inch colour LCD (123,000 pixels) and a black-and-white viewfinder. The USB streaming feature can turn the TRV250 into a video conferencing tool or a WebCam, with the ability to stream 320 x 240 pixel video at 30 frames per second (compatible only with Windows 98SE, 2000, Me and XP).

Digital8 Format: Digital8 camcorders deliver high-quality digital video and audio, with up to 520 lines of horizontal resolution and either 12-bit or 16-bit PCM digital stereo audio. The Digital8 format also allows for digital recording on 8 mm or Hi8 tapes.

Size and contents: the TRV250 measures 3.63 by 4.00 by 7.88 inches and weighs 1 lb 12 oz. This package includes the TRV250 camcorder, power adaptor/in-camera charger (AC-L15), InfoLithium rechargeable battery (NP-FM30), wireless remote (RMT-814), AV cable, lens cap, shoulder strap, USB cable, two AA batteries and CD-ROM with PIXELA ImageMixer Ver. 1.5 and USB drivers.

Manufacturer's Description

The DCR-TRV250 delivers all the benefits of Digital8 recording quality in a smaller chassis. And with the USB streaming feature, you can turn your camcorder into a video conferencing tool or web cam. Stream live and recorded moving video to a PC via USB! Make your own digital-quality movies. Stream and share content. This remarkably value-priced unit delivers amazingly crisp and clear Digital8 video, which allows you to transfer video to your personal computer via its iLINK DV input/output (iLINK DV interface cable sold separately).

As a committed fan of cine film, and its ease of editing, and someone who hates watching unedited hours of other people's videos, I was really nervous about buying a camcorder when my wife suggested it.

However, the advent of digital video, with its ability to be edited easily on a PC persuaded me. The trouble was, which one to buy? With cameras ranging in price from cheap to very expensive, and a limited budget I was very unsure.

Extensive reading of the various magazine suggested the DCR-TRV250 was the one for us. We wanted DVin to we could record edited shows back onto tape, but we weren't bothered about having the camera very small - I think they are hard to hold steady if they are really tiny. We didn't need backwards compatibility to play old analogue Hi-8 tapes, and we were not looking for one which could take photo quality stills, so this one seemed to fit the bill. With Sony's reputation for quality and innovation, you seemed to get a lot of good features for the price, so we took the plunge.

We have not been disappointed. The camera is in fact no larger than a Single Lens Reflex body; it takes the cheaper Hi-8 tapes, the playback quality via the leads supplied (including SCART adapter) is excellent. The camera is easy to use, the automatic steadying system works very well, the viewfinder is nice and bright, as is the LCD display. The 20x optical zoom gives great flexibility (forget the further 35x digital effect), although at its widest it's still only about the same angle of view as a 35mm SLR lens. There's a tripod socket on the bottom, and it comes with a USB lead - yet to be tried - and a power supply and battery which does around an hour or so. I suspect we will want a second battery as a back up, and possibly a car adapter.

All in all we are delighted with this camera. The Digital-8 tape (rather than the smaller DV tape format) means the camera is cheaper then DV ones with the same features.

So why only 4-stars not 5? Well, we thought it was cheap of Sony not to include a tape with the camera. But that's the only niggle.

All I Wanted and More 15 Mar 2003
On recieving the sony trv250 i was so excited as this was my first camcorder. I had used camcorders before and knew about the different feautures that you could get but this was the first camcorder i had ever owned. The main reason i wanted this specific model was because of the features and extras that this model included, but another reason i wanted this camcorder was becuase i have always been impressed with sony products, offering both value for money, and impressive performance.
The list of feautures includes sonys nightshot and steadyshot, and some of the basic features that are standard on digital camcorders. I was very excited about having nightvision and had already planned all sorts of short horror clips i would be able to make with my friends.
I knew that i was going to be using digital editing so i ordered a DV kit including a firewire card and a cable. This was very uselful becuase i wanted to make full use of thr camera which included using its DV in/out to edit and store my footage.
The sound and video quality is very impressive and no differences can be seen between digital 8 and DV tapes.
A big benefit with digital 8 is the affordability, the tapes to fit this model are just hi-8 apes.
The zoom is very good on this model becuase it has variable speed which means you control how fast it zooms. The steady shot is useful and not at all jerky like other models steady motion feautres. This is becuase the sony system uses lenses to direct the light steadily instead of zooming in and cutting corners to make it steady like other manufacturers systems.
All the controls were very easily accessible whilst recording and once id used it a couple of times i knew where everything was and didnt need to take my eye off the viewfinder to see what button to press.
The LCD screen is a good size and quality but uses battery up fairly quickly but this is to be expected.
The bundle i recieved contained a carry case aswell which is pretty good, it does everything u want it to do but nothing more.
Overall this product is fantastic value, quality and build quality. It is easy to use but can also be used proffesionally for making advanced films by editing them.
I highly recomend this camera to anyone on a budget who would like to get into digital video.

I'd been thinking about buying a digital camcorder for a while now and I finally bit the bullet and bought this Sony DCR-TRV250E.

So far I've very impressed, although having read some other reviews, I made sure that I'd bought some tapes at the same time. The camera was excellently packed, with just the right amount of gizmos and not too much literature, however to throw in one of Sony's own tapes, wouldn't have gone a miss!

Once unpacked, it was fairly self evident where things went and I was soon recording footage of the family and pets. The size and weight are just about right, so you feel secure in holding it and your shots are steady. The power control and recording button are under your thumb (like most cameras) however Sony have done away with the tilting switch for the zoom, which is a little disappointing as the sliding switch, to me feels a little too far away. It's also very sensitive, although this is not a complaint as after a while, with practice, it gets easier to control.

The LCD is a nice size and is very clear, and you don't have to be looking straight at it to see it. The mechanism for opening it out is firm and smooth, so it doesn't feel like it's going to fall off! Underneath are a few controls, and a small speaker for playback. This is where the menu is controlled from and nice little touch is the melody setting which plays a different pitch of beep when you're selecting and setting options. A small thumb-wheel acts as the navigating tool and works well.

On the top are controls for when the camcorder is in VCR mode and you can also use the Battery Information button which gives a really good indication of usage. There is also a switch for the NightShot control (which is neat) and a button for turning on the built-in light. Although not powerful it would be useful for close-up or where you want a little extra brightness.

Input and output where important in my choice of camera and unlike some other models you do get DV in as well as out. Sony also offers AV Out, USB Streaming and S-Video Out. Sorry no input for separate microphone, but the on-board sound is good enough for me.

All in all, I've found it an excellent buy. I couldn't afford to go the mini-dv format route, but I wanted something that I could point and shoot, take on holiday and film the kids growing up. This fits the bill for the value and the quality. If you're a pro you might want a bit more, but for the hobbyist or the amateur, this does a good job, and I haven't even mentioned the ease in which I had connecting the camcorder via a FireWire Card and Windows XP! I managed to be editing my first video real quick, and I was archiving it back to another blank tape, without even touching the camcorder and letting the PC do the work.
