I bought this camera the day before going on my honeymoon so I hadn't any real time to get used to its features.
But there was no need as it was so simple to use. Both my wife and I picked it up straight away and were amazed by the quality of the pictures and sound as well as the superb anti-shake feature which is a must-have.
If you are going to buy one, make sure that you purchase cassettes with the camera-memory feature included. This way you will be able to quickly scan through your tape to find a particular shot or add titles to your videos. It doesn't explain this too much in the specifications and we got caught out by buying normal cassettes.

Fantastic camera - I completely agree with what the other two previous reviewers have said. You will need an iLink or Firewire cable to get the best quality pictures from the camera onto your PC. These can be purchased from eBuyer at just £2. The camera software supplied by Sony is a big disappointment - I'd recommend just installing the camera drivers and purchasing something like Pinnacle Studio instead for all your capture and editing requirements. The camera does not come with a case or any mini DV tapes, so make sure that you shop around for these too. You do get an 8MB memory stick, but for a camera with such good picture resolution, this won't last very long, so you may want to buy a larger capacity storage device.

The DCR-HC40 is an all-round great choice. It's small enough to fit in your pocket (at a push), it's simple to use with an easy to navigate touch screen display and captures incredible results in most lighting conditions.
The camcorder looks incredible and in my opinion is easy to hold with all the important controls in just the right place. The 10x optical zoom is a big help but could probably be expected from any camcorder in this range. Night shot plus is also a nice extra but I'm not sure just how practical or useful it really is. The built in camera is a handy accessory but by no means will replace any decent digital camera.
Connecting to a Windows XP PC is very straight forward but the supplied sorfware is a bit of a disappointment. For serious editing on your computer you'll probably want to buy a firewire/iLink cable (£20 extra), which is essential when using a Mac as the camcorder doesn't seem to connect to Mac via the supplied USB cable. Additionally the supplied software isn't Mac compatible, but it's not a big loss as iMovie is far superior anyway. A different firewire/iLink cable is required to connect to compatible DVD recorders ect. (a further £20 extra!)
I also feel that it wouldn't have been any harm to supply a Mini DV tape as standard. Don't forget to purchase one with the camcorder so you can begin using it right away.
All in all, I'm very pleased with my purchase. The DCR-HC40 is compact, easy to use and produces great movies, which is what really matters. It's disappointing that all the cables and tapes weren't supplied, but I believe that this will be the case with most camcorders on the market.

It's nice that the HC40 can be used right out of the box (after charging the battery). It really is very easy to operate. My kids were using it to record and play within minutes. Hook up to TV is simple too. Picture quality is very impressive. No motor noise. The touch screen is actually simple and intuitive. There are probably a lot more features on the camera that I will actually need. For me the best thing is that it is very small, light and easy to use for everyone. The zoom is not as difficult to use as some reviews have suggested.
Stills are better than I thought after reading some negative reviews. However, I have a dedicated digitaa camera, so I'm not too concerned anyway. Low light stills no so good as they are a bit grainy, but full sunlight is great. Perfect for back-up though.
Low light capability is not as good - but that's partly as the other pictures are so very good the contrast is so marked.
Also great is being able to take my old Hi8 and transfer them to the computer via the camera for DVD production.
The bundled software is very basic and you would be much better off with Windows Media Player (free) or Movie Edit Pro 2004 - a bargain from Amazon.
In summary, I cannot imagine anyone being dissapointed for the price. There's really not much else I can think of that a camcorder should or could do better.

this is probably the most usable camcorder i have ever had i could use it straight out of the box, the quality is outstanding and the ease of transfer from camera to pc is impressive if not a little slow. the accesories are adaquate but i did need to buy a spare battery and carry case.

The DCR-HC40 camcorder package, including ImageMixer software, is excellent and thoroughly recommended. Having made the transition from old technology to customisable touch screen menus; I made a brilliant quality video edited with music via ImageMixer to VCD, no problem!

Things you are likely to need are an ACC-DVP Accessory Kit, Sony DV Mini tape cartridges (both available from Amazon, but currently on over 2 weeks lead-time) and, eventually, more comprehensive video editing software. If you take a lot of still photos, a larger memory stick is also useful.

The video quality and sound recording are truly magic. Things to realise are that stills from 1mb resolution shouldn't be compared with those of 4mb digital cameras, and quality of video copied from analog is only as good as the original source.
Compared with my Sony Hi8 'brick', the HC40 does not seem to have such a powerful built-in infrared light, nor can the viewfinder be tilted upwards. Also, operation of the lens cap is not integral with switching on the power, but instead the HC40 displays a reminder message!
