Manufacturer's Description

Simple digital video and still image recording is here with the DCR-DVD92 DVD Handycam camcorder. It's simple because Sony has created a camcorder with easy-to-use features, and you can record directly onto DVD. Features such as Super SteadyShot Image Stabilization compensates for camera "shake" and makes it easy to record smoother video. It's also easy to capture distant objects with 20X optical zoom and 800X digital zoom.Though easy-to-use, the DCR-DVD92 is fully capable of capturing difficult shots. With Super NightShot Plus infrared system, you can record even in low light situations. The 2.5" LCD screen provides image clarity and easily rotates to give you the best possible viewing angle. The DCR-DVD92 also comes with additional LCD touch screen controls for extra convenience. Could digital video and digital still image recording be any easier?

This camera works as well as any other DV camera, whether tape, hard drive or DVD based. It's compact (much smaller than I thought it would be), easy to use and has some nice features, although mini DVD only gives you 30mins of recording time, compared with 1 hour with tape, and hours with some of the HD based cameras.

If you're after a camera for non-computer users then this is great. Record to the DVD-RW (or -R), finalise it in the camera, then bung it in your DVD player to watch it on the telly. Or if you're feeling adventurous make a copy onto a DVD-R and re-use the DVD-RW. But if you want to easily edit the footage to make your own movies, then go for either the tape based or the HD based camera. The camera offers some built in editing functions, but these are next to pointless.

You can copy the files from the DVD to your PC, but they are in standard DVD .vob format, which most movie editing software doesn't support, so you'll have to convert them to another format before you can even begin to edit them. There's no firewire either, so you can't stream the footage into your editing software.

So the camera itself is very good, hence the 4 stars, it's just not versatile enough if you want to be creative. An option to record to the DVD in Mpeg format would save a lot of hassle.

I have owned this for a month now and have taken it on family holiday. It replaces my old Panasonic VHSC camcorder.
Good points: Writing directly to DVD. Touch screen easy to use, indeed, whole thing easy. Sound quality good. Smaller than expected. Very solid but not too heavy. Battery life fine
Not so good: Picture quality was not as good as I expected but still better than VHSC. Formats a bit confusing. Editing limited, but all I really need to do is remove a bad last scene. Could be edited easily on computer if desired.
Summary: I wanted a small camcorder which writes directly to DVD for family use. Perfect for the job.
P.S. It fits beautifully in the small Sony case LCS-HCB.

This Handycam is very easy to use and gives excellent results. It does have some limitations in that Fading in and Fading out need to be set up each time rather than having a default and +RW does notr allow you to overwrite a previous clip (only last photo taken). However the -RW (Video) does allow for "on-screen" editing.

However, for a point and shoot camera/camcorder the results are very good. The instructions/manual is straight forward and I was able to use this Handycam within 1hr of purchase (allowing for battery charge up.
