If you're after a camera for non-computer users then this is great. Record to the DVD-RW (or -R), finalise it in the camera, then bung it in your DVD player to watch it on the telly. Or if you're feeling adventurous make a copy onto a DVD-R and re-use the DVD-RW. But if you want to easily edit the footage to make your own movies, then go for either the tape based or the HD based camera. The camera offers some built in editing functions, but these are next to pointless.
You can copy the files from the DVD to your PC, but they are in standard DVD .vob format, which most movie editing software doesn't support, so you'll have to convert them to another format before you can even begin to edit them. There's no firewire either, so you can't stream the footage into your editing software.
So the camera itself is very good, hence the 4 stars, it's just not versatile enough if you want to be creative. An option to record to the DVD in Mpeg format would save a lot of hassle.
However, for a point and shoot camera/camcorder the results are very good. The instructions/manual is straight forward and I was able to use this Handycam within 1hr of purchase (allowing for battery charge up.
