After much searching and price comparing, finally opted for the dvd 106, ordered it 11am and chose first class delivery, to my suprise it was with me within 24 hours. After a 2 minute browse of the manual, i was up and running.

Picture quality great (on HQ even better)

Sound quality very good (beware of high winds on Mic, common problem on all camcorders)

Handling and usablilty, great, buttons designed for one handed shooting.

(be gentle with zoom control or you will hear the button through your mic)

Simplicity: even the father in law was eager to jump on and have a shot, and found it easy to use.

Battery life, 94 minutes on full charge (Bigger battery needed for longer shooting.

Zoom: 40x zoom is amazing, auto focus is quick to catch up

Software: Basic but competent for first time user, although if you want to get into serious editting, Sony vegas is the way forward but be prepared for some serious reading.

USB: easy to use and no download loss.

Summary: This Camera is aimed at the bottom end of the DVD market, Sony has added enough to keep any amateur filmer more than happy, for £230 it is one of the best on the market. unless you want to make a tv production this is a probably the best starting point.

It does what it says on the box, this camcorder should be on almost anybody's shortlist.

Note: unless you are taking a laptop on holiday, buy plenty of 8cm dvd's, to capture hours of magic moments.

What a great DVD Camcorder for a great price!! Seriously I have owned this for a few months now, and I cannot find any major problems with it. The picture quality is astounding for the price, and the sound quality is above average. Now the bad points...Sony chose not to include any DVD's with the package, so if you want to use it straight away you need to order them at the same time as the camcorder. Sony also, in their well know and infinate wisdom, decided that the camcorder needs to remind you every time you put a disc in that their discs are better than any-one else's and they recommend you only use theirs. This is utter twaddle!! I have been using TDK DVD-RW almost exclusively since I got it and they are better that the sony discs I purchased initially.

Now onto the software supplied with the camcorder.
I own numerous Sony products (Camcorder/dvd recorder/mp3 player/camera etc) and the 106 has the same problem as every other sony product. The supplied software, though perfectly capable of doing everything you want, is an utter nightmare to use. Also beware, when you upload the software it is designed to bury itself as deep as it can into your hard drive and latches onto and Sonic/Sony software you already have on your drive. The software for the 106 even told me that it could not fully install as the Sonic software I had on my hard drive was to up to date, and recommeded that I re-install an older version. No thanks.

Overall a great product from Sony, let down again by difficult software.

We bought this after extensively researching various websites to find a decent DVD camcorder that wasn't too costly, and I think we have made a brilliant purchase. It is so easy to use, and we are not technically minded at all, that after 5 minutes of looking through the instruction booklet, we were up and running.

If you are looking for a great DVD camcorder, which is very easy to use and has some excellent features, then look no further. Amazon is also the cheapest place to purchase one, but beware of the recommended accessory pack, as it is wrong (the battery doesn't fit).

This is an excellent camcorder and really easy to use - no need to read any manuals, just pop a disk in and start recording. Amazing optical zoom, small and light.
Not 5 stars because found touch screen a bit fiddly and doesn't come with a free disk.

***WARNING*** If you get an accessory pack make sure the battery is one from the 'H series' which are the only ones compatible with the Sony 106.
I bought the Sony ACC-DVDH DVD Camcorder Starter Kit, which another reviewer recommended instead of the ACC-DVDP because it apparently came with an 'H Series' battery. However the battery in both of these kits are incompatible with the 106. The 'H Series' include: NP-FH40; NP-FH50; NP-FH70; NP-FH100.

Verified Purchase
Purchased this camera with the accessory pack as a gift. The camera is great but the accessory pack recommended IS NOT the correct one as recommended by SONY. The battery does not fit the camera. Am currently awaiting response from Amazon will update review depending upon response received.
02.04.07 - Amazon have responded and am very pleased with the outcome. Unfortunately they do not stock the required battery so will have to purchase elsewhere. The battery supplied with the camera NP-FH40 is NOT available to purchase separately. Required spare battery is the NP-FH50, NP-FH70 or NP-FH100.
My son-in-law is very happy with the camera and has found it very easy to master. So pleased in fact his father now wants to purchase one.
Well done Amazon for excellent customer service.
