This is aimed at any prospective purchasers because of the review given by steveyorkeei. These mini dvd`s can be both converted and edited using the program from AVS Media. It`s a full suite of applications and you may edit to your hearts content. The -RW discs will need to be finalised before converting/editing (same as lead in/lead out on a dvd writer) but this only takes a few seconds. The +RW discs can be converted/edited without having to perform this. The unusual recording format that this camera uses seems to have made it unpopular, and it can be bought quite cheaply now because people can`t usually either be bothered to spend a little time with it or lack the technical knowledge. (It is classed as an entry level device).A fully working version of the software is available free for download from AVS which leaves a watermark in the centre of the screen. There is no "use by date" on this download. It costs about $29 US to buy but because you can buy the camera so cheaply it`s a bargain. The camera itself is a joy to use. Just point and shoot in "Easy mode" will suffice. The media costs about £3 for each disc but they can be reused in excess of 1000X. All in all a truly great product which is what you expect from Sony.

    Well Happy 1 Sep 2006
Bought this handycam just before I went away and to be honest I am totally happy with its performance and impressed with its technical capability.

The 20x optical zoom is impressive as is the touch screen viewing window. Its compact and the controls are easily within reach for use. With a flick of the switch you can change from camcorder to camera and the quality of the film and pics are impressive. Amazon is the cheapest place I found to purchase.

    Excellent value for money!!

There is no doubt this camera is excellent as far as taking digital video is concerned. However be warned - if you are interested in editing your digital video using software such as Adobe Premier, this camera uses 8cm DVD disks, and you would think it would be just a case of popping it into your PC DVD drive, wouldn't you. But no, no, no... Sony, in their infinite wisdom, have provided two alternative output file types, neither of which are editable. I have tried numerous programs which claim to be able to convert the Sony (VOB) files into AVI files which CAN be edited, but so far none of the programs I have tried have made the conversion successfully with the particular files this camera creates (they have time-sync data encoded with the video). This is infuriating, as the edit facilities Sony provide "in camera" are extremely limited.

So, if all you want to do is point and film, then yes, this is an excellent piece of kit. However, if you want to be able to edit your video on a PC, you will need a VOB to AVI conversion program as well.

Also, be aware that the 8CM disks will store around 35 minutes of video, and the battery that comes with the camera will last only 30 minutes or so before needing a recharge, assuming it was fully charged when you set off. These need to be born in mind if,like me, you intend to take this on your family holiday.I had a bag full of disks, but didn't have a second optional rechargable battery, and so when out for the day, only managed 20 to 30 minutes of filming before the battery gave up. The zoom facilty uses huge amounts of battery power. So, if you are going to be outdoors for more than 20 - 30 minutes, I highly recommend you also get the optional, larger battery available for this camera.
