Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

This Handycam DVD makes it possible to film your subject matter and quickly edit, use or distribute the movie on a lightweight and durable DVD disc. The 8cm DVD discs used by the Handycam range can be played back on most consumer DVD players as well as PCs with DVD drives and Sony PlayStation 2 consoles. With its high quality sound and image, the DVD format brings a real quality to your work. In addition, the DVD camcorder can access any scene without rewinding and cannot accidentally erase discs.

The inclusion of a USB 2.0 interface on the DCR-DVD101 means it can edit with the bundled "Image Mixer" software. Once you have made your movie, it is also simple to make as many more copies as you want. DVD discs can be duplicated when the Handycam is connected to a PC via a USB cable, even if the PC has no DVD burner. The x2 pack 8cm DVD discs RM feature on part number 12D-771 are DVD-RW format (for rewritable recording approximately 1,000 times). Each of these discs can hold up to 30 minutes of video recording. Both movies and still images can be recorded on the same DVD-RW disc.

The DCR-DVD101E is Sony's DVD Handycam camcorder, which records up to 60 minutes of MPEG2 video, and 640x480-sized still images directly to an 8cm DVD-R/-RW disk and then play it back on a DVD Player or PC with DVD-R/-RW drive. The DCR-DVD101E is equipped with a USB 2.0/1.1 interface for direct recording and copying of material to a PC, a 2.5" hybrid LCD screen, InfoLITHIUM battery and a high quality Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 10x Optical/ 120x Digital zoom lens, with Super SteadyShot and Super NightShot.

    Excellent camera 7 Feb 2005
The Sony DVD101E has excellent features, great quality and sexy design.

It is so compact and finished so well you can really see the quality. It is simple to use and the quality of the DVDs are fantastic.

The downside is the DVDs themselves. They are expensive and only store 20-60minutes on each disc depending on the quality you set it to.

I think most people will want to have it on standard which will give you 30mins per disc. It takes a long time to change discs so don't expect to pop it out and slip in the next one.

Plays back on my DVD player no problem, however it takes a few minutes to finalize a disc before it is ready.

Becareful about buying blank DVDs, Amazon list standard DVD-RW discs under accessories for this product that are not compatible. You will need 8cm DVDs.

There are a great selection of accessories for this camera including lenses, a case that enables you to take the camera Scuba diving and an extended battery that lasts upto 8hrs. There are also extra lenses available for super zoom.

Night Shot works in virtually pitch black but does reduce the quality and colour and causes a bit of lag when panning quickly.

The zoom is fantastic although I wouldn't recommend using the digital zoom much - optical is usually enough and doesn't reduce the quality

    A quality product

I have now had this camera for a couple of months having used analogue camcorders in the past. It is lightweight, easy to use and produces high quality videos. Irritatingly, Sony only includes a DVD/R which is permanent. The replacement discs are expensive (around £10 each for 30 minutes). My tip, if you have a rewriter, is to buy one DVD/RW then copy to a cheap DVD and keep re-using the DVD/RW. Yes, you can edit on the camera but the controls are inevitably tiny. The editing software which comes with the camera quite good and is easier to use.

    Excellent 4 Nov 2004
First camera was lost in the post but Amazon was quick to dispatch the second camera. I also had a few problems with parcel force when they did not deliver when I was expecting them to; many days lost waiting for it to arrive. At the end, I picked it up myself.
I have used this camera on various occasions and I am more than happy with the results it is giving. Even on a low quality setting (60 minute cd life) the quality on a normal screen is excellent.
I warn future purchasers to read the manual carefully because I did not and transferred the cds to my computer incorrectly which resulted in me having to change the filenames so that imagemixer would recognise them. You learn from your mistakes... :)
Photographs lack light in the dark, but then again, this is not a photographic camera but it does the job ok.
Nightshot mode is amazing, I was surprised at how good the image came out, the only thing is the lack of colour when using this mode but then that is what it is expected.
Battery life is as is expected (150 mins on full charge) although I find that the minute countdown is not always correct and jumps frequently from one number to the next (up and down).
Sony DVD-RW are expensive but there are a few copycat DVDs on the market, which manage to do the job at a more reasonable price. I recommend buying the RW's as they are more cost-efficient than the R's.
